  1. well you hardly ever post Dave so we probably didn't remember........ "and in case your wondering, I'm being sarcastic" -homer simpson
  2. Trust me, my canopy takes 1000 feet to open, sometimes a little longer. I have held my altimeter in front of my face with my piloto chute out and in my hand. If I let go of it at 3,000, I'm open at 2,000. When people watch video of my canopy opening, I hear a lot of "oh my God" "holy shit" "I would have chopped that" I actually think for some reason my canopy's break set loops were put too far down and so the canopy is almost in full flight when it opens which is why it opens so soft.
  3. actually a lot of skydiving films are far fetched, but they kind of have to be. The general public just wouldn't find a simple cutaway, reserve pull, and safe landing as exciting as Swoop cutting away, chasing someone down and pull their pilot chute. I am working on a script for short skydiving film for film school and I've been trying to think of wild stuff we could do. I think with film you should push the boundries of whats possible. I think it would be cool to see a wingsuit landed in the back of a truck. It's not ACTUALLY possible, but it would be cool to make it look like it is. Even though we know some things aren't for real and could never happen doesn't mean you can't have fun with it (and when whuffo's ask "can you do that" you can say "ya, we did that last weeked). For incredible skydiving stunts that CAN be done without effects and are fun to watch, check out Goodstuff by Joe Jennings or Crosswind by Patrick Passe. Both have some amazing footage by a couple of the best flyers out there.
  4. I love how they put the 8x10 photo over the HUGE blood splatter the cat made. A couple of my favorite lines are: "I killed your cat you drugy bitch" "Shuuuut your fat ass" "because I thought it would bring closure to our relationship"
  5. I was wondering if anyone knows what type of cameras are used for 16 mm and 35mm freefall footage. I know they have crash cameras out there, but I don't now what they are called.
  6. Has anyone seen this movie? I just watched it and it kicks ASS! If you haven't seen it, check it out sometime.
  7. I'm not a rigger yet, but I could see a downside to having a safety stow too loose. Your line bites shouldn't be very large and if the safety stow is loose the lines could come out of the stows. Now if you deploy the reserve, there is really nothing keeping the lines taught as the bag comes off your back toward line stretch and the bag might even come off the canopy too soon. This might lead to tension knots, line dump, asymetrical inflation etc...
  8. It sounds like you could also just do this in Premiere too. You can convert video to black and white and tint it and overlay it at 50% in premiere, is there something else in after affects thats needed?
  9. It seems like a lot of people are ordering neptunes. Why not go with Protrack if they are the same price and L&B has the best customer service in the business.
  10. The opening was one thing I liked about the stiletto, but I will agree that the safire opens better. In my opinion, it opens even far better than the spectre. I pack mine with the nose flaked open, slider pulled back, and a couple light roles of the tail. I get no less than 1000 ft. opening every time, on heading. (mine has the safire2 trim and tail mod) The stiletto was a little faster, hunted for a heading sometimes, but was also a great opening canopy. The stiletto has the edge in every other category in my opinion though, flight, turns, and landing. (but thats just my opinion)
  11. I'm learning to rig right now and the guy that is teaching me doesn't pack rigs without slider bumpers. He doesn't use the plastic ones though, he makes his own with 1 inch weave and tacks them tightly to the links.
  12. There are a lot of factors involved here, and I don't think premiere can handle what you want to do, but it might. For 3D, the cameras have to be really close together (same distance as your eyes) and I don't think the line of sight of the cameras can cross. If you have this you could try getting some red/blue 3d glasses, playing the videos over eachother and give each one a slight red/blue tint and see what happens. Experiment and see what you can do. I don't know how the achieve the 3d in Imax and universal's theatres (with clear glasses) but it would be cool to read something on this. Good luck.
  13. Ya, the new charlie's angels treats the characters more like cartoon figures than real life people capable of amazing things. I give it a D-
  14. That strange that they won't give out the line lengths. How are you supposed to know if your canopy is out of trim if you can't measure the lines?
  15. My safire is 189, the stiletto was a 190. My safire was recently relined with the trim and tail mod. Both were being loaded at about 1.25. I could fly the safire to a dead stop in no wind, but I thought it was a lot harder to do than the stiletto. I have only put 3 jumps on the stiletto in no wind so I need to do more to make a more informed judgement, but I do know that it felt like it had a lot more lift at the bottom end.
  16. This game is nuts. See if you can figure it out. http://www.ebaumsworld.com/pearl.shtml
  17. I got to jump a stiletto this weekend and I could not believe how much fun it was. I've heard people talking about how much they enjoy their canopy rides, and now I know why. The turns were amazing and I couldn't believe how much flare it had on landing. It blew my safire out of the water. The bad thing is, now I want one. Anyone want a safire?
  18. They can make cameras so small now (like the PC series) that it makes it kind of unpractical.
  19. Get a demo of both of them and find out which one you like best.
  20. what do you mean that it takes balls to ground launch a canopy? How do you do it?
  21. I would agree that if you tried to fly a highly loaded canopy fast down a mountain and make tight turns around gates that it would indeed be dangerous. What I was talking about was taking a big 230 canopy and flying conservatively down the mountain. Is it possible, would it be incredibly dangerous? Also, can't you ground launch a canopy on a mountain? I've heard of that being done before.
  22. OK, so I've kind of gotten the impression that it can be a dangerous thing to do, which is why its not really common, but if you could use any canopy, how about a sabre2 190, 210, or 230 for example. If the glide was right, you could go down the slope and if you crash it won't be very bad.
  23. I was wondering if anyone has done this down a mountain. I've seen some video and a few stills, but I hardly ever see much of it or hear about it. I always see people using high performance canopies for it and they are usually loading them up quite a bit, but can you use any canopy?
  24. No, I didn't take in my camera helmet, I'd either repair the one that crashed into the ground or buy a new one. A friend of mine did even get his helmet insured though.
  25. my coverage actually comes from state farm. If you have homeowners insurance with them, it should be easy to go in and get your camera insured. Just tell the agent you want single item insurance for a camera and you show them the camera, fill out info about it, give them a picture of it, and pay a small fee. You can't insure something if you use it to make a profit or for business (you probably can but it would be more expensive). Now its insured against pretty much anything and everything including theft, breakage, and even your own stupidity.
