I have used the the typical foam earplugs for hundreds of jumps, and find it easier to concentrate without all the extra noise. I also think it is easier to hear my audible. The handle may appear to 'fly away' but instead just be flailing out of sight. In my opinion, the downside of possibly throwing before a complete pull is important to consider. Pulling is much more important than throwing, and I would not want a student to get ahead of themselves/be in a hurry to throw. Unless this rig is extremely cheap and you have little money, you could probably get a much better value. Especially since you say you will buy a new cypres. If you are looking for used gear, then why not save money and buy a used cypres also, lots of them out there. I bought a PD210 9 cell with 30 jumps about 300 jumps ago, about '93 (had a long layoff until last summer). It is still in excellent condition and lands me (230lbs w/o gear) very nicely. I have stood up all but maybe 5 jumps. I am not a novice, but I think if the canopy is in really good condition, don't rule it out, it depends on how it flies and what it costs as a component of the total rig. The swift 5 cell (~175) came in just one size, and is really not worth anything and will give lousy landings. The swift plus 7 cell reserves came in at least 4 sizes (~140, 176, 200, 225). The 200 worked beautifully for me with an outstanding landing flare. I now have a 225. Last year I sold my 10 year old 200 for $350, to give you an idea of it's resale value.
