  1. Ok so here's what I'll be testing tomorrow... I built a 26x29.5 slider with a central release and added back and front pockets to the existing one. I'll bring a seam ripper and take off the rear pocket if it's too slow... The rings line up with stock with the 29.5 width, so maybe that'll help! I'll let you know how they go. I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  2. A longer bridle poses no cause for concern whatsoever. It's more bridle so when folding it, there's more, and it's more if a stretch to cock. I use a 10ft bridle. I don't wingsuit... Yet (maybe next toy) and from the original almost 8 foot bridle I switched from, the only diff I've noticed is I've had zero PC delays when I used to get them all the time.... Especially on hop and pops or delays less than 5 sec. Now I pitch, and I'm looking at a sniveling canopy. (Pilot chutes same size exactly) Just my observations. I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  3. Thank you. It looks almost the same size as stock... That was for a 149? My wife has a Safire 2 139 and the slider is almost exactly the same size. I just quickly held them up... No real measurement. I'm sure I've spent more on just materials than I would have just ordering one. Not to mention the time involved testing and building releases and laying out a new template and figuring it out as I go. It's just simply interesting and I like tinkering with and building things simply for he satisfaction of standing back and being able to say, "yeah, I made that from scratch." I don't know if I'd let someone jump my rig... Depends in the persons guess... Definitely wouldn't be a relatively new jumper. From the couple jumps I did with the slider, it's so nice once it's off, I don't think I could ever have a normal slider now. The main perk I noticed other than the head room, was the way everything loosened up. The harness is far more sensitive and I feel like I can feel the wing more directly, like I took the filter off. .... Or maybe I'm just crazy. I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  4. A picture would be awesome if it's not too much trouble. Then this slider should snivel forever.... Hmm. I'm gonna try it and see... I wanna test a few diff releases and such so Ill let you know how this one works... Halfway done.... Then waiting on more fabric! I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  5. Ok great, yeah that makes perfect sense... I'll take measurements and get started on it and post it when it's done! Thanks! I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  6. Thank you, I messaged him. I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  7. Maybe a device that fits into or replaces the hackey? You manually activate it and leave it on (like CYPRES) Could program to only transmit below a set altitude to conserve battery. Not perfect but probably cheaper to produce and much easier to integrate into rig. Also more likely to be used by super cautious jumpers who don't want anything "extra" on their 3-Ring.. What about if you have a bag lock.... Kind of when you need it most. And then it's not on and now you're looking for a black block and PC..... Couple weeks ago it took us 4 hours to track a cut away all gray canopy.... Stupid color choice... Mines fucking neon orange... Hehe... Anyways got me thinking..... What about a pet or key locator with a buzzer or something. You push the remote and the located starts this shrill beeping... I bought a 4 pack of cheap key locators for 12$ on amazon. They work to about 100 feet, through walls. Here's the pros I see... I walked within 30 feet of the canopy and didn't see it and then once the free bag was found we started walking down the wind line and almost stepped right by it when we found it. I was thinking you could sew a pocket into the d-bag. Small corner, or what have you. The hackey could work but it'd be easier to put something more sound friendly in the dbag. These operate on rf, and have a long standby, and are cheap. GPS takes a ton of power and unless you have an activation that always works no matter what, or you want to disassemble and charge every jump day, gps would be more hassle than it's worth.. When have you ever seen a cutaway where there's nobody who saw kind of where it went....? Just my 2 cents and I'll keep you posted if I have any sudden strokes of genius I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  8. I was feeling like it was taking forever to get under canopy on hop and pops, so I made and installed a bigger PC. Problem solved. Faster snatch, no trailing PC, and if you just tap your risers from the outside in, just slap them, it'll snap it open.... Be careful, just a tap. If you start pulling them while it's sniveling it'll hurt. Have fun, play around, be safe, talk to a couple riggers and pick their brains. I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  9. Just got done making one for myself... I'm not a rigger, but I know my way around a sewing machine. My job requires attention to detail so no sweat... Buy some rings for whatever you want to do, lookma sold me a set for about $60 plus about 25$ in materials and 4 hours later.... Here it is. Still working out the terminal openings, and testing it later in the week. The thing with the jvx is you need the extra flaps as well. So you're going to need to make a hybrid of what you borrow and what you have now. I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  10. No the grommets do not line up. The sliders are exactly the same dimensions however, minus the cut in corners. The rings sit just outside of the corners. Theres about an inch diagonally between the inside of the outer corner of the grommet and the rings when attached. So its generating very close to the original drag but the lines are allowed to be 1" wider on all corners, letting the canopy spread more prior to inflation. That's the thing, I've never heard of anyone putting a pocket on a removable slider... Got any idea whether to try it on the front or back or both? I'm leaning towards front thinking it will block/stir the air going in the nose. Then i think well its usually the tail that catches the most air at first and spreads the hardest, so maybe in the back... Maybe both... I'm also thinking making it smaller now since then I can have all the line groups at the same width as stock and produce the extra drag with pockets or a dome... hmmm Really, I guess I'm just thinking aloud or type-thinking or yeah something like that and seeing if anyone has any input... Thanks! I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  11. Ok, so this is more just to see people's point of views on the subject... I have a feeling it will be mostly negative but hey, Why not. Yes I understand I'm a "test jumper" now and I'm fine with that. I pack my own reserve and have a pretty good grasp of what's going on. (Or so I think) I built dbag , bridle and pilot chute assembly from scratch and it has served me well for the last 100 jumps and is still looking great. Yes it's collapsible. I was in need of a new pilot chute and was having deployment problems. New assembly and voila, fixed. So I have some construction and design experience. I'm not a licensed rigger, yet. I have a few more repacks and a test to do. Here's where I expect the most flak... I fly a Safire 2 @1.35. I am doing this simply because... Why not? I have the time and materials and finances to play and experiment. I regularly perform 270 and 360 landings and feel I have a very good grasp on how my canopy handles flies and lands. Change one thing at a time right? I've not stood up one out of the last 100 landings on this canopy. Not an exaggeration. I decided to try a hook downwind in 15mph wind and couldn't run it out... Still pissed about the stains in my mudflaps. Ok so the question is this, does anybody have any experience or ever heard of anyone putting a pocket on a removable slider? The reason I ask is this. I made one. I jumped it. It works great for hop and pops, but it's a little brisk at terminal. One of the snivel, Pop! It sits me up, starts to snivel, then open. I am my only packer, and like to think I'm consistent. I had the same opening 3 times Ina row just to make sure it wasn't a rouge opening. It's pink because that's the only neon color I had laying around and it's motivation to get it off and hide it. Can't let anyone see me with a pink slider! From my observations, I think the reason is this: the line groups are spread out while the slider is the same size. So it allows more air to hit the underside of the canopy, and spread it out, lessening the effectiveness of the slider. I could make a larger slider, which I may anyways, but that will even further exaggerate the lack of reefing and exponentially increase the snatch force... So my thought is if I can add drag without spreading the lines that would be ideal. It's just a removable slider at the moment with no solid plans to make it full rds. I've also thought about a domed slider... I'm using the lookma rds rings. Very nice and highly polished. Very pleased with those. Almost ridiculously polished. Maybe they're too slippery on the lines! Lol Let the bashing begin! Advice or comments also welcome! I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  12. More times than not, cleaning will be far more damaging to the canopy than the stain is. Couple of jumps and you should be smell free. Have a rigger look at it to make sure there is no structural damage and that's all I'd be worried about. In my humble opinion of course. I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. 14. I've made a few, complete with risers sliders and the like. The last one I made was an elliptical 7 cell, roughly 42" by 20". Look at a normal sized one and scale it down. I used f-111 from paragear, and matched it to my actual canopy. Figure out your wing shape and your topskin and lower skins will be more or less rectangles. The top skins will get wider near the thickest part of the canopy. I learned a lot just from making a few different designs. Playing with different brake settings, packing techniques, and all that can make it open now or snivel for 50 feet. My actual openings have improved and I taught my wife how to pack with my models. I feel like I have a better understanding of how it all works together and how each part interacts with each other. It flies and I had some videos and I'd take more pictures for you if it wasn't in a tree. I may be able to upload the videos later. When I get a chance I might be able to find my cardboard templates and send them to you. Oh and one more thing. 1:1 loading is not the same when it's scaled down. Mine flew best with about a pound and a half on it. Roughly .25:1 I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  15. I put a sabre 1 170 in an i5 and it was very snug.... My wife has an i4, which was a bitch stuffing a hornet 150 into, so in my not so professional opinion, no fucking way. I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  16. Yes! That is specifically one of my pet peeves! Understand your shit! I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  17. Attention to detail is a must. I taught my 9 year old daughter to pack and I've let her pack for me unassisted but closely watched several times. I'm honestly surprised at how quickly she picked it up. She can pro and psychopack my Safire2 159 with 50 jumps on it into an icon i5. I'd watch you pack something else and then, yes, I'd let you pack for me. Just pay attention and develop a systematic approach that works for you. (I've never seen anyone do it exactly the same, but I always have the exact same routine.) I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  18. My wife has an I-4 brand new and a hornet 150 in it right this second, but about to put a safire2-139 in it. The 150 fits fine. its older so easy to pack now and it has room to spare. I could sqeeze a 160 in it no problem. I currently have an I-5 with a safire2 159 in it and it wont take anything smaller and not have too much wiggle room. I can almost line up the grommets without threading the closing loop. Hope this helps on sizing for the real world, not a chart. My canopy has 40 jumps on it by the way. 19. Like this? I did these on two people I jump with. Nice change of pace from doing infinity symbols and quotes all day. I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...

  21. My wife and I both jump. We went through the aff at the same time and decided to buy gear at the same time as well. We decided to go all used at first. My rig I found almost new with a main that I was able to sell and buy something a size up. My wife's rig was, well it just didn't fit right. That lasted 50 jumps and I got tired of hearing it and we ordered her a new icon. She loves it and it's fucking pink! Yay! I since have bought a new Safire 2 to replace the 18 year old sabre, which I sold. The wait sucks , but pay it now or later... I have gone through 3 used mains and then ended up with the safire2. She is actually waiting on hers to be finished and we will be selling her hornet 150. Anyone want it? Bottom line, if you buy used, it's a gamble at times. It can work out really well like my container or be like hers... I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  22. I do all my own packing and also pack for my wife. Neither of us have ever had to chop. When I was teaching myself to psychopack, with a sabre 170, I did a hop and pop at 5k and had an instant canopy with a line over. I immediately grabbed my handles and then had the sudden realization I was still at 4200.... So remembering some research, I decided what the hell, and unstowed the toggles. The line came up off the top and voila! Good canopy! This was when I had maybe 60-70 jumps. Another jumper got it all on video and you can hear him laughing, then says what are you waiting for and then, oh, uhhh well that works, wtf!? Interesting day. Just yesterday I went with the dz operator on a hunt for a chopped tandem canopy. The search took over an hour of low flying in the Cessna 182 and then a 2500' hop and pop to land with the canopy. I landed back at the dz with aerial photos and directions to go pick up her and the canopy. The canopy was found almost 2 miles away from the dz. winds were light and variable, but after opening the tandem went in a straight line away from the dz while trying to clear line twists, and eventually chopping. (They landed off and were both fine) Fun stuff, but I would have been sick after the first hour and turning up nothing that resembled my main. Luckily my main if fucking neon orange. The tandem was neon green and white. I found the while thing by seeing the yellow reserve PC still attached to the skyhook. Keep that in mind when coloring your next main. That green and white was like fucking camouflage! The part that scares me most about chopping is not being able to find my shit and having save up again for another new main.... :( I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
  23. Flaking the canopy will definitely decrease malfunctions and wear and tear. I also have noticed, that the neater your flake job is, the neater the rest of the pack job will look and feel, and the easier it will go into the bag. Especially with new canopies. Flaking takes me no extra time at all and it makes the rest of the pack job go smoothly. Also, then you, yourself, can keep tabs on your gears condition at all times... Sorry packers, but you pay a packer to put the canopy in your rig and really that's it. And unless you're using the same packer, roll the dice to see how it'll open. I know the condition and workings of all of my gear at all times. I know not everyone will want to do this, but if more people did, I think it would prevent many potentially avoided problems. It's good to see you looking for advice here and sounds like you sort if tried at your dz. Ask an instructor you trust or anyone that you always see packing their own gear. I see too many people with hundreds of jumps who can't pack at all. A license requirement right? I currently jump a Safire 2 159 loaded at 1.4 and I have just for "fun" (read, don't do this) straightened the lines and more or less balled the canopy up and it opened fine. As long as you have line tension and the slider on the stops it'll open nice. Of course body position and airspeed ect play a huge part, but as for packing... If you want it see some insane looking packjobs and just how resilient your gear is to botched pack jobs, watch this... http://youtu.be/i16HryVyRaI I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. 25. My wife has a hornet 150. I pack it because she occasionally will pack like shit. You cannot trash pack this canopy!! Flake everything and roll the outer 4 nose cells in and tuck them into the nose of e center cell. Double stow, tightly all non-locking stows and it swivels and opens in 3-500 ft. It's definitely easy to pack, the fabric is thicker and easier to handle, but that being said, you better make sure it's perfect. She's had packers(who were very well trained) pack her slammers that she came down with bruises and a bloody lip. So, have fun. She's currently waiting for a safire2 to be done being made. Wanna buy a hornet 150? I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. My dad wouldn't let me use the ladder to try the roof...
