  1. What are "meters?" How many dollars is equal to one meter? Rich! I need your help! Apex BASE #1816
  2. Congratulations again Rich - couldn't have happened to a nicer family! Looking forward to Go Jump Oceanside and the air conditioned packing hanger we've been promised! Apex BASE #1816
  3. Disco. Jason has a reputation for running quality events and ensuring that jumpers were treated with respect and their privacy protected. When he felt that the town and organizers could no longer provide jumpers with a respectful environment he pulled out and the boycott was started. The boycott was then undermined by someone with selfish motives. I cannot comment on his character, but there are many others who have been willing to chime in. He has been silent for the past couple of months on the subject. The rumors around this silence point to further deterioration in the relationship between jumpers and the event coordinators. I, and every BASE jumper I have talked to, is opting not to support this new organizer or a planning committee which fails to treat it's "main attraction" with any respect. I hope this thread will direct skydivers and hopeful BASE jumpers to go to Twin Falls where we are wanted, appreciated, and respected. BD2015 will be a shadow of what it's been in years past, at best. Apex BASE #1816
  4. Thank you for posting this. If you're considering going to Bridge Day 2015 to make your first BASE jump I highly suggest you look into a proper course at the Perrine instead. Apex BASE, Snake River BASE, and ID BASE (in no particular order) - all are far superior to what you'll experience and learn at BD2015. Plus, you'll get 3-4 days of instruction with more jumps, different kinds of jumps, and way more fun. This town and this event has mistreated our community and the vast majority of us are voting with our dollars to stop supporting them, at least until they make some changes. Apex BASE #1816
  5. This is the only reasonable response to these threads. Everyone else is wasting their time. Apex BASE #1816
  6. Sabre1 w/ pocket slider. Best do-everything canopy out there. Next question. Apex BASE #1816

  8. 1. Yes. If you're comfortable under that canopy then the Sabre2 is a better choice. 2. I jump a 28" ZP with all of my suits. Shadow, Havoc, Venom Power. 3. Get a 9' bridle. It's fine for any kind of jumping and much better for WS. 4. I think the skySnatch is a nice design but probably over-engineered for skydiving. Any normal PC is just fine. That said, less oscillation MIGHT help you with line twists. I think better body position and a longer bridle are more significant factors though. On the Colugo work on flaring from full flight before pitching. A nice controlled dive followed by a smooth flare into your pitch will create some nice airflow over your back to feed the canopy. Smooth air makes for smooth openings. Apex BASE #1816
  9. I just thought that deserved to be re-posted. Apex BASE #1816

  12. I'd watch out if I were you! The French are highly skilled in the art of internet warfare. Any other kind of warfare? Not so much. Apex BASE #1816

  14. As long as you get a black one it should be pretty safe. Apex BASE #1816
  15. Hahaha, perfect! I sometimes wonder how many of the camera incidents are correlation rather than causation. There are, most definitely, obvious examples of camera distraction causing problems. We've all seen them. There are also examples of AADs, RSLs, and even main canopies causing problems. Every piece of gear we strap on has the potential to cause an issue. But we have to evaluate it and decide if the pros outweigh the cons. The cons with a camera are shrinking alongside their physical size. It's easy to demonstrate snag hazards to a student on the ground. Trying to convince them that they are too foolish to pay attention to the ground while filming though? That's a tougher argument to have, no matter how true it may be. You know why the D.A.R.E. program failed to keep kids off drugs? Because instead of providing proper education it was just a giant scare tactic. You know why the 200 jump rule is failing to keep kids off cameras? Apex BASE #1816
  16. I recognize that it's not compulsory. But you should also be willing to cede the fact that it's so popular might as well be. You and I are from different generations. I can't speak for all millennials, but I don't think I'm making some giant leap in suggesting that the vast majority of jumpers in my generation have a few things in common: 1. They are very comfortable with technology. 2. They carry a camera in their pocket at all times. 3. They don't intuitively understand the difference between wearing a camera on a skydive versus snowboarding versus riding a motorcycle, etc. At some point we have to realize that there are two options: 1. We can make rules which sound nice but are followed by very few. 2. We can make rules which strike some as a compromise, but are much more likely to be followed. I was the guy these rules were written for. I blew off the 200 jump rule. Sure the rule sounds good to you, but I didn't intuitively understand why the old guys were so stubborn about it. I think if there was a course/checklist available to people just like me at 50 jumps I would have had more training, more understanding, and maybe even more jumps before putting a camera on. I'm past it now and don't care either way. But in my view you can keep pounding the table at cool/kewl/kool/kule kids and be ignored...or recognize that the world is changing and adapt appropriately. With all due respect, of course. Apex BASE #1816
  17. I agree. But there are still new-ish drivers on the phone and new-ish jumpers with cameras. Everyone has a first camera jump eventually. When I was learning to drive car accident carnage videos were part of the curriculum. Even my insurance company has a video for young drivers with horror stories to try and drive home (pun) the danger factor associated with driving. If part of the camera curriculum was a compilation of camera-related incidents I think that could be impactful (pun). Apex BASE #1816
  18. This is a pretty solid point. I don't know that there will ever be a case to be made for cameras IMPROVING safety...but one could certainly (either now, or in the future as technology improves) make the case that they don't make it more UNSAFE. Or, at least, not more unsafe enough as to maintain the current guidelines. To me, a camera skills checklist would be a good starting point. I think the appropriate place would be after a B license. Not as part of the B license, but a separate rating to be earned once the B level is reached. The problem with the 200 jump requirement is that it seems ridiculous so it frequently goes ignored. Hell, I ignored it. I'm not saying it was right, or smart. But I had 100 or so jumps and just said, "F*ck that nonsense rule." I get it now, but I didn't then. I don't think I'm unique in that way. Had the requirement been a short course or skills checklist after 50 jumps I would have both taken the required training AND been more prepared. Apex BASE #1816
  19. Oh sh*t guys...HE'S RIGHT! ALL STUDENTS ON ROUND CANOPIES NOW. IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO PREVENT SWOOPING DEATHS! Apex BASE #1816
  20. It can bring your credibility into question (in the eyes of the student). If there's no solid rationale behind your camera opinion, why would they care to hear your position on anything else? I'm not saying there aren't good arguments against wearing a camera on AFF level 1. But I think there's something to be said about the advancement of technology having some impact on our OLD standards. The OPs point about full-face helmets and giant dial altimeters is well-made. What about people who jump with ski helmets and goggles? I even saw a kid jumping with a Scuba mask once (with holes cut for pressure purposes). No f*cking joke. Nobody said a word to him. When it comes to cameras, we oftentimes can't see the forest for the trees. Apex BASE #1816
  21. +1 That's all I have to say about that. Apex BASE #1816
  22. People who fly Tony: "It's the best suit ever!" People who fly Squirrel: "Get a Funk instead!" People who fly PF: "Nothing beats a Havok Carve!" People who fly 'Other': "Don't forget about 'Other!' That should save everyone some time. Apex BASE #1816
