Bite, tongue or blow switch?

Recommended Posts

For me the problem of a bite switch is that the "off" position is usually holding your mouth open. Kinda hard to do when wearing a full face, or chin cup helmet that is suposed to fit tightly. Blow switches can ggunked up and have less fine control over when a shot is being taken or repeat shots. Toung switches are my second favorite, easy to use and know when you're taking a shot. Hand switches are the best for me when I don't have to worry about having a hand occupied.

To add to what JP already said, I switched from a bite switch to a tongue switch mainly because when I would bite down on a bite switch it would bob my video camera framing up and down (I was using a camera helmet with a chin cup). I didn't like that less than quality footage, so switched to something smoother. No need to constantly open and shut the teeth with a tongue switch.

I'd definately recommend the tounge switch for BASE purposes. I believe that you can take pictures faster by flicking your tounge repeatedly (but then I have some practice ;),) than by biting. Also, it's hard to hold your mouth open through your average BASE opening, so you'll probably end up taking a picture on every opening with a bite switch.

I once rode in a canopy too low while fixing a knottish mess of unstowed breaklines, toggles, triple risers and the drawstrings of my slider. I was wearing my camera helmet with just a photo camera with biteswitch. I probably should've chopped but didn't and ended up having to PLF the landing. Turns out I made a couple interesting :S shots of blurry-grass-at-an-angle while rolling over my shoulder :D

you can have your mouth shut and NOT bite AFAIK... and with a digital camera and a good card, no big deal to shoot on opening:P

Oh yeah, I also always suck on my switch under canopy and walking back to the packing area.

your GF wil also quite like the tongue-switch option in the long-run:P

I used a tongue switch but now prefer bite and blow switch, because (for me) I manage to get more pictures in per jump, and they have more of a 'click' action/feel.
Where with the tongue switch, I had a hard time 'feeling' if I actualy took the picture...

I like using tongue switches best, but they seem to break a lot more often than the others. I kept getting little holes in the membrane allowing moisture in there and it messes them up. I went through 4 of them last season. Conceptus is great about it when they break. They will replace it for free, but they won't send the new one until the you send them the broken one so you're going to be without a switch for a week.

If you're going to go with a tongue switch you should probably buy two of them so you have one to use while the other is being shipped.

Jarno,

You say that you get more pictures in a jump with a bite/blow switch.

In BASE, where there's generally only a short amount of time, you would assume that those are better for that purpose then? Correct me if I'm wrong.

If you give one continuous blow for a certain amount of time can you set the camera so that it will take pictures for as long as you blow, or does it have to be done in 'pulses'?

cheers,

Joris.

keep on biting....

Ok, but the question is.... Do you have to bite bite bite bite etc., or one bite and 'hold' it? Same I meant for the blowswitch. Is it blow blow blow, or can you give one blow for a certain amount of time and it will do click click click?

:S:)
