Gohmert identifies how unfair the law is to republicans

Rep. Gohmert recently identified a part of the US Justice System that is very unfair to republicans - you can't lie under oath.

"If you're a Republican, you can't even lie to Congress or lie to an FBI agent or they're coming after you. Or they’re going to bury you. They’re gonna put you in the D.C. jail and terrorize and torture you."

Yes, he actually said this.  The republicans chafe under the cruel and heinous requirement that   . . . . politicians not lie under oath.

Well to be fair to republicans, IMO Bill Clinton opened the floodgates to this. During the Monica Lewinsky debacle. The UK and Canada recently had big investigations about political lying in their respective parliaments.

Democracies seem to be morphing towards autocracies with regards to lying. There is more and more of it with little consequence.

IMO President Biden is good for staying on the straight truth tracks. The only way to end this is a jail cell.

Trump said so, so it must be true.

Maybe remind him that, as noted above, Bill Clinton was impeached (and acquitted) for perjury.
He did suffer other consequences. Fines and suspension of law license IIRC.

Boris Johnson was twice fired from newspaper jobs for lying about stories and sources before becoming a full time politician. As PM he’s continued to be the exact same person, just with less accountability. 
 

Boris has had a corrosive effect on standards in public life in a very Trumpian way, but luckily we’re not quite as purely partisan just yet. Yesterday he did survive a no confidence vote from his own party which could have forced him to resign - but 40% of Conservative MPs voted against him. Imagine if 40% of Republican Senators voted to impeach Trump! One difference there is that our no confidence votes are secret, so MPs are possibly freer to vote their conscience without worrying about backlash from the true believers. Though many of them publicly declared their position for or against anyway.

 

Boris still isn’t safe though, he’s also facing a standards enquiry over whether he deliberately lied to parliament about partygate. On the one hand our ministerial code is clear - ministers (including the PM) who are found to have lied to parliament must resign. On the other hand, regardless of what the enquiry finds, the person who decides if ministers (including the PM) are guilty is the PM. Boris has already broken this thought-to-be-cast-iron code by protecting his foreign secretary against a finding that she bullied staff. On the other hand, because the PM is a representative of rest of the parliamentary party in a way that the US President isn’t, I’d still expect even Boris to resign if the enquiry categorically comes down against him because to do otherwise would annihilate his party’s chances at the next election.

 

Ultimately though he has, like Trump, highlighted how weak our systems of standards and enforcement are when they come up against a man who really doesn’t give a flying fuck about anything except his own ambition and ego.

IMO Canada is similar to the UK about the acceptance of corruption of politicians. Not near as bad as the US, but plenty bad. The Canadian PM Trudeau has had scandal after scandal but a Teflon coat has prevailed. Hence the state of the current and past coalition governments.

He still wants them to apply to 'the little people'.
