The Politics of Fear/Anger

In the GOP presidential debate Saturday night, Donald Trump, the front-runner in Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary, said he would bring back waterboarding and “a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding” if elected president. Sen. Ted Cruz, who won the Iowa caucuses last week, said that waterboarding didn’t amount to torture, but is simply enhanced interrogation,

Nazi Germany was socialist.

Progressive = Socialism = Communism

The National Socialist Party of Germany misused many things. Among them the word "socialist". As you now are as well.

The term "National Socialism" arose out of attempts to create a nationalist redefinition of "socialism", as an alternative to both internationalist Marxist socialism and free market capitalism. The Nazis sought to achieve this by a "people's community" (Volksgemeinschaft) with the aim of uniting all Germans as national comrades, whilst excluding those deemed either to be community aliens or "foreign peoples"

OK thanks.

Please explain the difference between the current liberal democratic ideology and socialism.

More in line with my lifetime:

Quote

With the failure to reunify Vietnam by elections, Democratic Republic of Vietnam attempted to unify the country by force in the Vietnam War (1955–75). North Vietnam and the Viet Cong insurgents supported by their communist allies, including the Soviet Union and China, fought against the military of South Vietnam, the U.S. and other anti-communist military forces, including South Korea, Australia, Thailand and smaller players. North Vietnam also supported indigenous communist rebels in Cambodia and Laos against their respective U.S,-backed governments. The war ended when Democratic Republic of Vietnam forces and the Viet Cong defeated Republic of Vietnam and in 1976 united the two parts of the country into the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Well first of all, that's above my pay grade. But more to the point those terms have different meanings to different people. There are so many ways to be liberal, like there are so many ways to be conservative.

If your point is merely that some facets of liberal thoughts echo socialist ideas, you are correct. But you would label people who are in favour of gay rights as liberal, and there is nothing socialist about that. Liberals also tend to favour religious rights for all, and that has nothing to do with socialism. This list could go on and on.

In short, both those terms are merely shorthand that you use to denigrate those who you disagree with. They are both mostly meaningless in the context that you tend to use them.

About that nasty bit of 60s and 70s war in SE Asia. The battle against communism is the focal point of the US experience. But to the people who suffered the most, it was a war of liberation from French colonialism. They had the misfortune of being caught up in a larger battle between Russia, China and the West.

Instead of what should have been a lot like the throwing off of oppression that happened in the American Revolution, they were dragged into a 15 year struggle that pitted China and Russia against the US.

But despite that word being in there again, it still has a nebulous meaning. The name USSR also uses it, but we all knew their ideology then as communism. "Socialism" has it's root in the word society. No wonder it's confusing. It's an all purpose word.

>"Natural Citizen" is not yet defined.

Ah, so you want to reinterpret the Constitution. I am not surprised.

>Legitimate discussion on "possible solutions", not a problem.

So "not a problem" proposing violating the Constitution.

>Not a problem, bills are introduced to state a position. That does not
>make them law.

Ah, so he is just proposing to violate the Constitution. No wonder he has your support.

>I agree with rushmc, waterboarding is not torture.

Doesn't matter. It is both cruel and unusual, and hence violates the US Constitution, no matter what you call it.

>Please explain the difference between socialism and the Democratic Party.

Socialism is a philosophy of government. The Democratic Party is a political party. Both the Democrats and the Republicans support socialism. Veteran's hospitals? Socialist. Roads? Socialist. Military? Socialist. Air traffic control? Police? Fire departments in most cities? Schools? Socialist. And the GOP supports most of those aspects of our society.

If you think that there is a significant difference between the parties on socialism - then FOX News has done its job.

Yes, you are shooting in the dark. And yes, both the Republicans and the Democrats support socialism.

Since 2008 our politics has shifted from issues to fear/anger as Winsor apply stated when he started this thread.

So, who are you supporting at this point in the race for the White House that will best allay your fear/anger?

Monday, 22 Feb 2016, Blaze TV, the Glenn Beck Program focused on the fear and anger in our presidential race.

Beck presented the invisible primary process of how the individual earns the right to run through selection by the big money contributors.

The Democrats and the Republicans have similar but different selection processes.

He noted that the Republicans tend to change the game within their venue to achieve the desired outcomes.

Donald Trump has screwed them up. Bernie Sanders has had a similar but lesser effect with the Democratic Party.

Bottom line, the voters are not intelligent enough to choose their leadership and must be manipulated. However, today's voters are PO'd and afraid and they are looking at the extreme mavericks. The system is in chaos.

So? Nothing has changed since 1787. Read Federalist Paper #68 on the reason for the Electoral College.

I agree that the electorate is largely incompetent.

It is, however, from the electorate in general that our 'leaders' are culled, and the scum rises to the top.
