Canadien born born Ted Cruz declares his intention to be President

In most of the US a vote for anyone is a wasted vote. Don't a few handful of swing states always decide who wins anyways.

Here is the relevant math.

It's quite complex but you can download software to do it.

Go ahead, throw your vote away.

I disagree with the notion that a third party vote is a wasted vote. Sure, in the current climate, a third party candidate is unlikely to win. On the other hand, the more votes third parties get, the more attention to the third party issues get from the main parties.

Anyway, where I live, a vote for anyone but the Republican is usually a "wasted" vote.

^This.

I have always voted in the major elections, and always will.

There have been a number of times when I knew perfectly well that the candidate I was voting for wasn't going to be the winner. Whether I was supporting the loser, or letting the winner know that he had opposition, or in the case of "third party" votes, telling both major parties that I didn't like their candidates.

That doesn't matter. I'm expressing my opinion and my preference.

I've often voted for the "fringe party" candidates. Green, Libertarian, Socialist, Constitution, whatever.
Usually those votes are for races where I don't like either of the candidates, or races that are so lopsided that my vote (for or against the winner) won't matter. If those parties get more votes, then they get more notice. Then they might become more viable.

I was sick enough of the 'lesser of two evils' voting, and was unable to decide which one was the "lesser evil" in 2012 and voted Libertarian for president. It was a protest vote, and a futile gesture.

But I cast my vote. Which I think is important.

Yeah, will he might be running into the same situation that my family would face -- not being able to realistically get insurance elsewhere, due to previously existing conditions. Be interesting to know whether Congress members have the same difficulty finding anyone to accept the ACA insurance, as many others have reported. Two doctor offices, out of three I've been in the past few months, have little signs at reception saying that they do not take ACA coverage (I think one was specifically ACA coverage by a certain insurer).

If I could afford good insurance, I would probably retire within a year. By "afford" I mean that I would be happy to pay $30k per year for insurance and medical expenses for my wife and I.

Same situation for me. I look at the positions the candidates take and vote for the one who is closest to me on things that are relevant to the office. I don't much care what the public utilities commissioner thinks about abortion, but I do care about their stance on alternative energy sources, for example. That means I've voted D, R, L, I, or even Green.

Even if a third party doesn't win, if they get a significant percentage of the vote, and especially if that percentage is gradually increasing from election to election, it will encourage them (and their donors) to keep on trying. It would be hard to maintain supporters if you are always only a fringe vote, 1-2% and never growing. I think it's important to support the party that you would like to see win, even if they don't have a hope of it in this election.

Another one here. I sometimes vote in the republican primary (we have open primaries in Texas), to select the republican I'd rather have won in the long run. Then I vote for the candidate I prefer in the open election as well. And those votes also vary across the spectrum. I do read the League of Women Voters sheets (although they're less useful Han they used to be because of republicans' reluctance to "cooperate with liberals" :S), as well as the endorsements in the paper. Note that the endorsements sometimes direct me towards a candidate, and sometimes against.
Given that we vote for judges, ballots can run to nine bazzilion entries. I have never voted a straight ticket, and can't imagine he conditions under which I'd do so.

It is polarized around here, but not magnetic.

Same here. I just read up on the candidates' background, platforms, past history, etc, irregardless of their affiliation and vote for which one will be the lesser of two evils.

:P

I did vote for Clinton over Dole, and for Bush Jr over Gore.
