People vote for the least bad option. Plenty of people weren't too happy about voting for Obama, but it was infinitely better than the GOP alternative. (and so far, I don't see that changing any time soon). If the GOP actually manages to put up someone half credible who doesn't suffer from foot in mouth disease they stand a good chance.
