What I have never done is take a penny of welfare....

How noble! And I suppose you never drive on public roads or attended a public school or fly out of a publicly owned airport...

when did roads and school become welfare? And I absolutely paid or my parents paid the tax associated with the USE of those SERVICES, and while we are on the subject I dont have issue with assistance but if your getting it you should be earning it. Don't have a job and have food stamps you should be sweeping the streets.

MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT
Life is Short and we never know how long we are going to have. We must live life to the fullest EVERY DAY. Everything we do should have a greater purpose.

And if you took all the wealth from the top, you'd just balance the deficit, for one year.

that's right.

Research the sum total of 100% of the taxable incomes from all families making more than 100K. Compare that number to the annual budget. You'll quickly notice that raising taxes on the "rich" isn't the place to start. If you want a balanced budget, we need to spend less, and everyone needs to pay a little more. Even those 51% of households that don't pay any taxes.

When the top 1% have 40% of the nation's wealth, it does suggest a good place to start. You aren't going to raise much revenue from a million homeless indigents.

why reply to that post twice? did you think I was going to say that the rich shouldn't pay more? Did you not read the word "everyone" in the text you quoted?

or are you just trolling now?

Yes it does. We should make them pay more! It would only be fitting if they paid, say, 40% of the US taxes.

Which they do. Sounds like you've found a good solution - and it's already been implemented.

In point of fact, for the anecdote to match the latest figures from the IRS (2008 is the last year they have the breakdowns for), the 10th guy would have paid $70 for his share of the beer - maybe you should have used that 12 seconds to get educated on the difference between income tax rate and percentage of total tax paid.

OK, so I should pay the exact same dollar amount in taxes as someone that earns a $20 million USD per year. I understand the point of the story now ;)

they should pay enough to repair the damage they've done to the economy - that's only fair...

I think he may have been proposing to make them pay 100% of the tax burden as long as he does not have to contribute.

Only in your mind does the idea of welfare include all the items you mention.

Only in your mind would you exclude taxpayer funded items that benefit you, Mr. Anonymous Troll, but include those that benefit others.

Tax rates need to be progressive, not linear. Even the "fair tax" whackos introduce non linearity into their proposals.

. . . and get payments for the help they've given the economy. That's only fair, too.

they got plenty of money from us (lots of lovely tax cuts for the rich) and in return they crashed the economy for us. did you not notice? when they've paid off the deficit (using an estate tax would be good) then you can tell us on their behalf how generous they are...

Actually, people not paying their mortgages was the start of that crash.

Or when they give most people in America jobs you can thank them. Or do they have to lay you off before you realize that you depend on them?

Agreed; in a sense, the labor of the poor allows companies to become rich. And by doing so they become less poor. Everyone wins; the poor create the rich, the rich turn the poor into the not-so-poor.

Did you happen to notice that yesterday the people of Spain rejected Zapatero's socialist PSOE party in Spain's municipal and autonomous community elections (their equivalent of State and/or Provincial elections). When Spain rejects socialism you know something is up. Capitalism is far from perfect. But it is better than the alternative.

dream dancer did not even notice the stadium, starting block nor the starting pistol, he thought that was the sound of the rich executing the poor alongside mass graves.

except when the rich get too rich and start building money palaces that crash the financial system. then there's a recession and depression and the rich have to be relieved of some of their excess money for the benefit of all - rich and poor alike. that time is now :)
