It's basic Keynesian economic theory that robust, targeted deficit spending is an accepted (some say recommended) strategy for easing a recession, especially one that is more severe and accompanied by high unemployment. Bush got us into an Iraq war that was unjustified but monstrously expensive, and instead of doing anything meaningful to pay for it, he and his congressional cohorts cut taxes for the rich and corporations.
