I live in Southern AZ and I have been thinking of joining the volunteers.
As an EMT/Firefighter, I witnessed undocumented aliens traveling across the border just for the free medical care.
Hospitals in southern AZ are facing a crisis. How do they stay open when the majority of the patients they treat never pay for the service? How do they restock supplies? How do they pay the staff? Most importantly, will the hospitals be open when a tax paying citizens like my self or my family need them most? Answer, not at this rate.

Setback for Homeland Security, Critics Say

In what some critics of illegal immigration are calling a setback for homeland security, 500 border control agents hired just this week learned today that their jobs were being outsourced to Mexico.

“In a perfect world, it would be great to have American border control agents on the U.S. side of the border,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff. “Having said that, we are going to save a bundle by having those same functions performed by Mexicans on the Mexican side of the border.”

Recognizing that the outsourcing decision will not endear him to critics of the Administration’s immigration policies, Mr. Chertoff said, “I fully expect Lou Dobbs to rip me a new one.”

Nevertheless, Mr. Chertoff said, starting Monday the U.S. will scrap traditional border patrols and replace them with what he called a “state of the art border-control calling center” located in a suburb of Guadalajara.

The plan calls for prospective illegal aliens to telephone the calling center with the approximate time and place they intend to sneak over the border to the U.S.

Hoping to silence criticism of the controversial plan, President Bush addressed the immigration issue head on today in a speech in Grand Rapids, Michigan: “To those who would illegally enter our country seeking jobs, let me say this: stay where you are, and eventually our jobs will come to you.”

I'm amazed that this hasn't been explored in the US.

Bear in mind that the UK's supposedly creaky, delay-ridden, inept, National Health Service is actually run on between 1/2 & 1/3 of what an average health insurance package costs a US citizen per capita! Our socialized health care has no exclusions, and no problems with long term care pitfalls! If you need care, you get it, and the failings of The NHS are big news simply because they are so unusual.

Of course, socialised medicine along the NHS model would be death for health insurance companies!

Yes it does.
That color is green. Plain and simple, it is a matter of money. Hospitals, Fire departments, and ambulance services survive on money received for services rendered or from tax dollars. That is a fact.

I work all over south texas and have witnessed a bunch really a bunch of undocumented aliens crossing the border and have helped them in any way that i could giving them water food and even money when i could.......................put yourself in there shoes.........what if everyone treated you like shit just because you were trying to provide for your children .........

Why even worry about Mexican Nationals illegally immigrating when we turn away our own citizens from some longterm care? This corporatized medicine scheme starves needy Americans form healthcare, nevermind foreigners. Hell, the maggot monkey in chief has pushed thriugh the Overtime Bill and now the Bankruptcy Bill tocrap on poor Americans. 3/4 of all medically-based BK's are by people that have medical insurance, so these are 3/4 fair players of the system and now monkeyman wants to remove the right to BK on enormous debt. I don't think he was saying that anyone sucks at their job, I think he is saying that as a whole, the border patrol is rather inneffective. I belive the reason would primarily be that there are far to few BP people to cover the area they are working with.

From the side of a Mexican National, if you were one with no knowledge and/means of legal immigration would you jumo the border in hopes of a better tomorrow for your family? We used to share an airport with them at Brown Field, and for their level of funding they do quite a good job. They regularly round up thousands of border crossers and get them back to Mexico, while being shot at and accused of racism and incompetence.

About five years ago a van with about 25 illegals crossed the border near our DZ. A border patrol van started following it at a distance. No lights, no pursuit, just following it. The driver got spooked, ran a light, collided with another car. End result - 5 people dead, and the border patrol got blamed for it.

So if you want to volunteer, great. But beware that someday someone might consider you as incompetent as you consider the border patrol - or worse, you may be accused of a crime for doing what the border patrol does on a daily basis.
