On politics and friendships.

Recommended Posts

Some of the people I like the most have political views that are often the polar opposite of mine.

Gareth Holder is the clear frontrunner, but he's in the company of Quade and the vonNovaks (not that Amy and Bill are joined philisophically at the hip, that I know of, for sure :P), Kieth, and many of my skydiving friends.

So how about the rest of you pontificators and bloviators? Do you exclude the other side of your political fence from your social circle? Thank God my friends don't.

-And on that note, I must grant massive truly heartfelt admiration to Bill and Amy. When visiting their home recently I saw firsthand their genuine commitment to their professed values. They have the only residential greywater system I have ever seen.

;)

Actually some of my closest friends over the years have been polar opposites as well, and I respect their views even if I don't agree with them...Also it makes for some pretty cool debates...B|...

It would be boring if you only hung out with people who thought the same way as you...Variety is the spice of life...(I think that my favorite compliment of all time is that I was "spicy":D:ph34r::D:ph34r:)

I mostly get that I seem really intelligent other than my religious and political views. Strike that. Mostly I get people telling me that I make a great first impression and then I start talking.

That is, of course, assuming you didn't meet me after the beer light has come on. Then it may be "The guy on the ancient 7 cell tied to the collection of drunk guys? That's JP"

My closest friends (in fact, all but one or two) are hardcore leftists. I'm a right-wing libertarian, and my best man is a classic post-Keynesian Canadian socialist. My other wedding party members are a hardcore latino activist and a New York liberal Jew.

Among my other best friends I list a granola public defender, a white-guilted rich girl from Orange County, and a large C Communist.

Come to think of it, I don't have any right-wingers that I count as my very close friends. My wife was a liberal, though she's more right wing than I am since we went into business and she discovered what liberal policies do to our taxable income and where our tax dollars go.

I think it's that people who think like me bore me. I hate being part of a one sided conversation. I think it has to do with the fact that just because all my friends are wrong (well, Johan isn't always wrong) doesn't mean that we don't like each other.

Indeed, they put a lot of heart into their actions. They leave the thinking to me! :P

Ok, I am sorry, but that made me laugh my ass off...because after I began looking at my paychecks and seeing how much money is taken and I never see again made me rethink my "liberal tendencies"......

I'm a social liberal, but an economic moderate.

My friends are all over the map. from hardcore conservatives to people way more liberal than me.

bout the only people I don't get along with well are those who are anti-homosexual. A very close family member is gay, and it sincerely bothers me when people say rude things and want to take away his rights.

Could somebody help me. I'm conservative, but I'm also a member of the Sierra Club. I worry about the environment and over-populating this country. Never voted for a Democrat for President; never voted for a Bush. I lean toward the Republican Party, but won't go that far. I feel like both parties have let us down with our current choices for President. One of my good friends at work is very liberal. He opposed the war in Iraq, but has a son there with a pair of army jump wings I gave him. I think about a third party, but I also wonder about life on Mars.

Hell no.

How can I preach tolerance and understanding whilst at the same time practice discrimination based on what someone believes?

Well... This thread makes me feel a little better..

I've been accused many times of being "anti American" on this site - but I'm planning on coming to meet a bunch of you at the end of this year.

Last thing I need when I arrive are people going on about my politics when I'm there to jump and party!

Mate, at the end of the day, there is no discussion about what beer is best. Everybody knows that Carlsberg Special Brew rocks. ;) Too bad we don´t get it in Spain
Regarding the political views of my friends... They are all right winged, i am, as most of you know, a leftie, but hey, they are fun. They may be wrong, but they are good guys. :P

:D Hope to meet you when you come on over, Tonto!

Political, religious, money, and sexual discussions can always get people hot under the color. But, just because a person's viewpoint is different than mine, doesn't exclude them from friendship. It just makes the discussions that much more interesting. :)

No, political ideology in the long run doesn't matter. Personal friendships are what count.

That's maybe because in the political spectrum, libertarians are closer to the far left and vice versa that most people would believe. There are only a few core issues that separte them. For instance, as a leftist who supports the second amendment, I could throw a rock and hit you from by position I think.

I'm also a lefty who supports the second amendment.

It's about the only thing I disagree with the ACLU on.

I'm all for personal freedom. If you're not hurting anyone by doing it, go ahead. (this is why I can't vote republican...they're too mired in making everyone adhere to their narrow-minded value system)

I'm also all for social programs, but feel they should be privately funded by the people who believe in them. (why I grudgingly vote democrat. I don't like that my tax dollars are given to social programs, but since I'd give voluntarily anyway, and I can't bring myself to vote for someone who wants to take rights away from me and others, I feel I have to vote democrat, because third parties don't have a snowball's chance)

So, I'm a social liberal and an economic moderate.

This is because most political debate tends to focus on the core wedge issues to divide people. You'll see that in the posts here. They devolve into propagandising almost immediately. However, you'll find that even if you're sat out far left like me, you'll have way more in common with a conservative than you have differences. If more people concentrated on the commonality, rather then the differences, the tone of politics in this country would be much more civil. The word compromise might suddenly become a valued item in the discourse, instead of being considered a weakness. I blame Reagan for starting that trend, but then it's pretty well documented that I blame him for just about everything, including the Spanish Civil War, and male pattern baldness.

While this country is comprised on one half trying to "take back" the country from the other, you're just going to see more of this nonsense.

There is one exception to this rule, and that is religious fundamentalists. Those I would place on a remote Island.

Then I would blow that island up.

Then I would shoot that island into the sun.

Then I would blow the sun up.

That should cure that problem.

Define 'hurting' as you've used it here. Is it causing bodily harm, or making someone sad?

Not as long as people hold that attitude, they don't.

I would define hurting as something that is measurably painful, rather emotionally, physically, or financially.

if someone steals money, stalks someone, or physically harms them against their will, they should be legally responsible.

If someone wants to marry someone of the same sex, that has nothing to do with anyone but the two consenting adults, and the state, therefore, has no business regulating it.
