Spam, spam, wonderful spam

Recommended Posts

I, along with the rest of the folks who are too cheap to get a mail screening service, get a lot of spam.

I can understand the porn -- I used to date a guy who thought subscribing me to that crap would be a good way to get back at me, or get met to go back with him. I've used email for airline confirmations, so of course airline and travel offers. I've done the same with toner cartridges, therefore...

but all of a sudden I'm getting inundated with ads for septic systems. I live in a suburb of Houston; water comes from a tap. What weird website have I looked at that caused them to think I was interested in septic systems?

Anyone need a septic system?

You, at least, have a house. An inference could be drawn that perhaps you had a need for a septic system.

I, on the other hand, keep getting spam for those penis enlargers....

I get those too. I just wish they'd offer to enclose some samples for me to try out, y'know?

Yes, I know. Problem is, I do believe my ex could benefit from both the samples and the product....should I forward them to him? :)

I got this today:
Quote

Subject: Libertyville Illinois

I appears that you have not been to the new Sports Complex.
I am sure you will not be disappointed.

I live down the road from Libertyville, and I have in fact been to the new Sports Complex. I was not disappointed. The weird thing is, I never discussed my trip to the sports complex with anybody, in person or online, nor have I ever expressed any sort of desire to visit a sports complex of any type. Also, the complex is run by the city, so I don't think they would be spamming people (especially weird short spam).

Wendy-

I am glad you opened this topic. It is driving me crazy.

The ones that get me bad are personalized.

Ann, you really need to enlarge your penis. Improve your Penile blood flow and Gain 3+ Full Inches In Length, plus Expand Your Penis Up To 20% Thicker. No Pumps! No Surgery! No Exercises. Does this excite you Ann, it might exicte your mate?

I dont get the septic tank ones, but I do have a house and I get the debt reduction, and mortgage ones. And the human growth hormone ones.

Basically, I open my mail and Select ALL. Rarely is there anything in there really FOR ME.

Typical Monday morning. Download 236 emails. File 10 of those (business stuff that doesn't need a reply). Delete 194 spams, four viruses (a light day for those) and two forwarded jokes.

I don't know whats worse, spam or forwarded jokes.

Definitely a tough one. I have had friends that only forward jokes, so they end up on my blocked senders list, cause you don't want to offend them and then they go and send you something important that you don't get.

can't seem to win.

I get fairly irrate when people forward me jokes, or chain letters, stuff like that...I've been on BBSes and/or the Internet since I was 7, I've probably read your lame ass joke before, I don't fucking want it!

See, it annoys me...

I hear that.. The worst are the people that have just got their new computer and are online for the first time and want to "share" all of the neat things that the internet has bestowed on them.

You should have to read an FAQ and sign a contract about joke forwarding before you are allowed to get an internet connection.

Definitely spam. I like it when my friends forward jokes (to work [DSL]). Breaks up the day a little.

ROTFLMAO...
:D

Axe handle that is a good one. My ex neighbour once chaced the landlord out of his apartment with an axe handle. I would have paid to see that. I wonder if the landlord was sending him spam

There was a chain mail about love life and bad luck or some crap like that. I got that chain mail several times, over a period of maybe four years. It's amazing how persistent these things are.

Wendy,

Depending on what you use to read e-mail, and your e-mail account setup, there are things you can do that help tremendously.

I use a number of block lists that keep the majority of spam out of my e-mail box, even though I do tons of stuff on the Internet and have my e-mail address online. I also have some active filtering that looks for lots of common spam and keeps it out of my inbox.

Post up the details of your access (type of access and ISP, not names or addresses), and some of us geeks will recommend compatible utilities and products if we can.

and every time I delete it I can hear it say in it's Arnold voice

"I'll be back!" >:(

As far as friends/family and forwarded mail, I tell them that I'm allowed to delete any mail that's forwarded. If they want me to definitly read something it should be sent to me, not a group.

EV1 has some great SPAM filters and not a whole lot gets through. Lately I've been reporting the ones that do.

Oh, I know. But then I check my junk mailbox, because every now and then I discover the spam filter has been a little too aggressive.

Today I've gotten about 30 notes at work about Vanguard. Apparently someone tried to access them online and reported it to a gigantic mailing list. Everyone else is telling several hundred people to quit emailing :S

Wendy,
Check out www.spamarrest.com (sorry, don't know or have the time to make it a clicky, where's that Val when you need her?)
I have that and it's a wonderful, wonderful thing. You get a 30 day free trial and after that you sign up. It doesn't cost much at all.
