What is your hometown famous for?

Recommended Posts

Hmmm..

I live in Frederick, Maryland. Birthplace & gravesite of Francis Scott Key, who wrote our National Anthem.

Also an important site during the Civil War: The Confederates briefly took over Frederick & held it for ransom for $250,000 or so.

Frederick was also the site of many Civil War hospitals: some of the churches were temporarily devoted to taking care of wounded soldiers.

Frederick was also where the American patriot Barbara Freitchie lived, whom John Greenleaf Whittier wrote a famous poem about:

Up from the meadows rich with corn,
Clear in the cool September morn,

The clustered spires of Frederick stand
Green-walled by the hills of Maryland.

Round about them orchards sweep,
Apple and peach tree fruited deep,

Fair as the garden of the Lord
To the eyes of the famished rebel horde,

On that pleasant morn of the early fall
When Lee marched over the mountain-wall;

Over the mountains winding down,
Horse and foot, into Frederick town.

Forty flags with their silver stars,
Forty flags with their crimson bars,

Flapped in the morning wind: the sun
Of noon looked down, and saw not one.

Up rose old Barbara Frietchie then,
Bowed with her fourscore years and ten;

Bravest of all in Frederick town,
She took up the flag the men hauled down;

In her attic window the staff she set,
To show that one heart was loyal yet,

Up the street came the rebel tread,
Stonewall Jackson riding ahead.

Under his slouched hat left and right
He glanced; the old flag met his sight.

'Halt!' - the dust-brown ranks stood fast.
'Fire!' - out blazed the rifle-blast.

It shivered the window, pane and sash;
It rent the banner with seam and gash.

Quick, as it fell, from the broken staff
Dame Barbara snatched the silken scarf.

She leaned far out on the window-sill,
And shook it forth with a royal will.

'Shoot, if you must, this old gray head,
But spare your country's flag,' she said.

A shade of sadness, a blush of shame,
Over the face of the leader came;

The nobler nature within him stirred
To life at that woman's deed and word;

'Who touches a hair of yon gray head
Dies like a dog! March on! he said.

All day long through Frederick street
Sounded the tread of marching feet:

All day long that free flag tost
Over the heads of the rebel host.

Ever its torn folds rose and fell
On the loyal winds that loved it well;

And through the hill-gaps sunset light
Shone over it with a warm good-night.

Barbara Frietchie's work is o'er,
And the Rebel rides on his raids nor more.

Honor to her! and let a tear
Fall, for her sake, on Stonewalls' bier.

Over Barbara Frietchie's grave,
Flag of Freedom and Union, wave!

Peace and order and beauty draw
Round thy symbol of light and law;

And ever the stars above look down
On thy stars below in Frederick town!

The 405 freeway and L.A. traffic, crime, gangs, smog, etc... On the lighter side of things there is Six Flags (if you like standing in line for hours), a great coast line full of world-class breaks and bikinis (everyone should visit Venice beach at least once) and best of all four great DZ's within a hour and a half's drive from downtown.(Taft, Perris, California city and Lake Elsinore).

My hometown, Huntsville, AL where I grew up has the Space and Rocket Museum with full-size mock-ups of the space shuttle, Saturn 5 and other rockets on display, and Space Camp right next door. Plus, a few miles south on the Redstone Arsenal (home of defense and space contractors including Marshall Space Flight Center and a military base) is where they first test-fired the main engines for the Saturn 5 rockets that went to the moon, and it is now a national historic site. My parents remember the day they did the first test. The house we lived in at the time was about 10 miles away, and the test rattled all the windows pretty good! :o

Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.

We are better known in Japan than we were in SoCal due to the large number of corporate headquarters located there, Mitsubishi, Fuji, Bandai, etc. Most people in SoCal have no idea where the hell Cypress is.

The only people of note from Cypress are led by the 80's mullet man himself, the Greek super stud - John Stamos. I went to high school with members of the band, "Lit" - and I can confirm that A. Jay Popoff is the lead singer's actual name. Yes, he really is "A. Jay Popoff."

There's another guy from Cypress, who has referred to himself as being Cablinasian (also known as "Eldrick"), who is fairly highly regarded within his sport as being one of the best. Even though he went to a competing high school and I didn't play golf then, I covered golf for the yearbook and I waited until our team played Western so I could see him play - there was a buzz about him. Maybe you've heard of him, too. He only made about 90 million dollars in 2005.;)

Chattanooga - Home of the train

The Chattanooga Choo-Choo, that is.

Also home to the first Coca-Cola bottling facility.

Also played a large roll in the Civil War.

A large roll or a large role?? :P

It's where RC Cola and Moonpies come from too!!:)
Usher is from Chattanooga as well as Samuel L. Jackson...

SEE Rock City where you can see seven states on a clear day (I think that's a little far fetched)

Collegedale, TN which is right up the road, is home to Little Debbie cakes. YUM Oatmeal Creme Pies. :)
Most importantly though...I was born in Chattanooga. :D
