I think you should not pick on peoples spelling when you spell BASED as BAISED:ph34r::ph34r::ph34r:

did not... :ph34r::P:D

edited to add: not being able to spell myself gives me more right to make fun of others lack of spelling ability... and frankly... my "post" isn't an article for a news affiliate... so different standards should apply... :P

I am guessing the movie is actually based on the 300 spartans who held off 300,000 or so persians at thermomomomompololis (whatever) for 3 days.

Historically speaking the single most famous last stand in history.

I guess that I'm in the minority here, but my humble opinion says that 300 sucked the big one.

Typical over-hyped, over-produced, politically correct, formula-recycling Hollywood fluff.

Fact: Spartans were bent as doornails. In the movie, King Leonidas refers to the Athenians as "boy lovers"...Spartans were guilty of that themselves. This is NOT to take away from the fact that Spartans were probably the best warriors the world has ever seen; but it's just a fact: Spartan warriors were more gay than hetero; their relationships with women existed entirely for procreative reasons.

Fact: women had a more prominent role in Sparta than they did in other Greek societies, but they had little political sway. That historical fact is politically incorrect, so Hollywood "corrected" it by giving Leonidas' wife a prominent role.

And, typical of Hollywood fluff, the plot was so replete with special effects that the fundamental element of character development fell completely by the wayside.

I'll even go so far as to say that this movie had undercurrents of war propaganda. Hearing the repeated phrases "fighting for freedom and democracy" and then seeing the slaughter of countless computerized faceless towelheads reminiscent of today's modern terrorist kinda gave me that idea.

That said, I know that Hollywood needs to sell movies, so of course they'll skew the plot for mass appeal. But I still they could have done a lot better with such an inspiring story.

And f.ck what the hype says: this movie is not the best thing since the Matrix. Not even close.

Just my $.02.

That would all be fine and dandy...

if it were hollywood who did it.

It is based on a comic and was shot as the comic was written, much like Sin City. Miller has said himself that it is not entirely accurate nor is it meant to be.

You are reading far too much into it. So don't like it. But not everything is a damn conspiracy.

Has anyone seen my hat?

It's called "Thermopylae", and it's where the marker was erected that says "Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie."

It's still there.

When Xerxes of Persia demanded that the Spartans surrender their arms, the Spartan king Leonidas replied, "Come take them."

I would rather have seen an adaptation of Pressfield's "Gates of Fire" novelization of the battle. That would have been an excellent screenplay, IMO. It had humanity, humor, drama...too bad. Maybe someday Hollyweird will adapt the story, but they'll probably PC it to death.

I suppose I could have paid more attention to the thread's subject title to realize it's part fiction. But even at that, still a poor adaptation of a real events imo. And I'm not a conspiracy theorist -- certain aspects of the film just stunk of Rambo to me.

We saw it last night, and it was good (despite what the poopers in this thread are saying) for entertainment value.

Boo-hoo, it wasn't historically correct...go watch a fuckin' documentary if you want historically correct. :S:D

I thought the gratuitous butt shot and the extended sex scene was kinda meh...I mean you get the point...yeah, they love each other....yeah, they like to boink...do we have to see every position? I kinda like my movies separate from my pornos. B|:P

-All this was compounded when our friend that went to the theater with us, a big, barrel-chested Texan, blurted out when he started doing her doggie-style, "Yeah. Who's your Spartan...?" B|

The row behind us started laughing...

I went to see it last night but the movie never actually played. There was a 2.5 hour long Marine Corp recruiting video and then everyone left!
