Puppy Bill: $8000

My 8 month old puppy has been told she needs me to spend $8000 on her.

Gutted.


If i was to put her down her brother would be lost.
Two vets told me there was nothing wrong with her. Now i get told if those vets did their jobs properly i would not have to be paying this money.

Insurrance will not cover it now because the injusry is an old injury that should have been fixed when the other vets saw her.

So pissed off!

I'm pretty sure you mean hip dysplasia right? Sorry to hear. Very painful for the dog live with. There is no reason the other vets shouldn't have caught that.


edit to clarify: I wouldn't put a dog down for this reason either. One of my dogs has had knee surgery which wasn't cheap.

I'm so sorry! You're between a rock and a hard place on that one. Puppies have a way of making you jump through hoops you never anticipated.

Well there is no way i will be putting her down... Thats for sure!

Her little brother would be completly lost. We took her to the vet and i stayed home with him and he was so distraught that his sister was not here.

$8000 is a hell of alot of money though.... I just hope it makes her better. I really hope it does not become an ongoing problem or she gets killed by a car after we fork out this cash. That would really suck!

I think they replace the hip. I will know more on wednesday. Right now it is killing me watching my dog go through so much pain. She is squealing constantly.
The fucked thing about it is she was not hurting like this when she went to the vet, Now she is in agony.

Hey Cora, you're in vet med, is $8K in line with that procedure would cost? Sounds high to me for hip dysplasia

Bigway, is this procedure being done at your personal vet's clinic or a specialized vet surgery center that is like a people Emergency Department? Reason I ask this is because my Kozmo had an infection under his eye and with all of the MRIs and biopsies and things they did at the Emergency Surgery Center, the bills were astronomical! Then they suggested all sorts of additional procedures which added up to thousands of dollars. Then when I took him to my parent's vet, it ended up being a simple extraction of an impacted, infected tooth and he's 100% fine now.

HAve you Americans ever considered that not everyone lives in America?
America is one of the cheapest western nations in the world. The city i live in is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Seeing the cost of living here is so much more expensive and our dollar is also lees than yours $8000 is the cost.

There are only two places in the city and surroundings that specialise in this and we are going to one of them. I know it may be a higher price than the others but I am the type of person who believes that 'you pay for what you get'.
This is also the third vet we have been too and the only one who has accepted that he has sever hip dysplacia with athritis. Poor girl is not even one years old.

Sorry if i sound cranky but i have a serious issue here and people just amaze me that they have tofind something to argue about all the time.. In this case there is 2 or 3 people telling me that 8K is too much for the procedure.

I never said anything about a city that americans can not afford.

I said that Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world for cost of living. I also said the cost of living in this city is much higher than America that is one of the cheapest places in the western word. Actually, Out of all the countries i have been to the only ones cheaper than america was south east asia and a few eastern european countries.

ask about TPO surgery, they split the hip into three places and add plates to get things straight. may not work for your case and then again it may.
One of our dogs started out as a pound rescue and cost 15$ she now just a little over 10k in vet bills and 3 years old.
She had the TPO surgery and she does not miss a step now.

I can throw a rock and hit 3 skydiving vets between here and Houston. I'm sorry, but as the friend of a vet whom I've seen treat many a pup for Dysplasia and who currently has a ten year old St. Bernard with it. I gotta question vet #3. And, you do know that there are vets in this world that over-extend themselves financially, play on people's emotions and use a technique called, "upsell." Now, I'm sorry about your dog, brother... but the reason some people are challenging your vet's amount is because, you're not the only one to have had a dog go thru this and I'm fairly confident that unless you live in a city paved with gold, 8K sounds a bit steep.

Now, you may have stumbled on to the greatest doggie dysplasia othoped on the planet or the other two were doing you right. Vets have a referral network... if they aren't board certified, they could have done a referral and made some money from the referred specialist... Some won't take the money, but there is/was an avenue for them to set you on. They could have "turfed" your pup over. Why didn't they do that? Is vet #3 board-certified? And, will he/she be doing the actual surgery? Or will... anyway...

We're just suggesting you do some homework on vet #3 cause a lot of the time, it can be controlled with diet and meds during the evaluation period and most vets don't like to do the surgery till the dog's a couple of years old and have grown into their bodies a little bit. And, if surgery is required, 3-4K is tops for a good surgeon. Shit, fly here and we'll hook you up with the best doggie orthopod in Oklahoma for a lot less and send you home with money in your pocket.

My issue would noy be the money but is she going to spend the rest of her life in pain. I would do alot of research on what the probable outcome is going to be. Seeing she is less then a year old I shudder to think what the future holds. As much as you might want to get pissed about this, it might not be the best thing for the dog.

These days, with our economy.....pretty much anything this side of Ethiopia. If the dollar gets any weaker, it may as well be printed on Charmin....at least we could use it for something!
