Peej 0 #1 November 25, 2008 So after 28 years of bliss the relationship with my tonsils has finally gone south and we've decided to part ways. They've always dreamed of making it as a comedy act in Vegas and me, well i'm happy right where i am. So instead of standing in their way i've conceded to their wishes and they are being cut out of me on Tuesday. So in all seriousness, how much pain and what kind of recovery am i looking at here? I'm only seeing the Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist who'll do the surgery on Monday so i can't ask him and the suspense is killing me! (I'm 28 if that makes any difference) Thanks Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky

virgin-burner 1 #3 November 25, 2008 well, begin with a weeklong farewell-party for your tonsils. if you survive that, everything else is cake.. why do you have to get them out? couple of years back the doctors were all for cutting out everything, now, not so much anymore.. having said that, they wanted to take mine out for no good reason other than being as necessary as a circumcision.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Peej 0 #5 November 25, 2008 Yeah it's weird, i never had a problem with them as a kid and all of sudden I've had chronic tonsillitis 3 times in the last two months or so. My GP recommended that they come out. The farewell is in full swing! Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky

simplyputsi 0 #11 November 25, 2008 Whoa whoa whoa. One person says it's ok and you are all hooray!!! hahaha that rhymed. Co-worker who is close to your age had them out and he was in bad bad shape for almost a week. It was very painful for him. I knew a girl who got hers out around age 21 or 22, it was very painful for her as well. What the co-worker was told is that some people do great, others take time and it hurts. You'll find out which you are soon, all you can do is hope for the best. Say goodbye to solid food for a week. Skymama's #2 stalker -

councilman24 36 #15 November 25, 2008 I had mine out in high school. A sore throat but it didn't hurt any more eating solid foods than liquid. So I ate what I want. I'm sure I didn't have much for pain meds. I don't remember how long. 3 or 4 days of hurting is what I remember.I'm old for my age. Andy9o8 0 #19 November 25, 2008 I dunno; but I do have a friend who was circumcised as an adult. Says it hurt like a mo-fo. I suppose it's similar.
masterrig 1 #20 November 25, 2008 You'll have a sore throat for a couple days till you heal-up. The really good side is... you get to eat a lot of ice cream! I just wouldn't recommend the 'chocolate almond' or 'butter brickle'! Seriously though, everything effects folks differently. Like someone said... you're a young, tough, South African man! drdive 0 #22 November 25, 2008 Sorry to say, but some of the most miserable adults I see in the ER are post-tonsilectomy patients who don't have good pain control, can't eat, and get dehydrated. Keep in mind though, that I see only the ones who do bad and have problems, the ones who do well don't come to the ER. So my perspectve is biased by the subset that I see. Doc"We saved your gear. ladydyver 0 #25 November 25, 2008 My ex had his out 2 years ago as well as sinus surgery...was miserable for 5-7 days with no complications. Just depends on how you do in all honesty. Some people do really well, isn't too bad for them and others have complications or have trouble with pain management. I think some of the big problems is pain control and hydration. If you sleep with your mouth open you will find that your pain will be worse because the back of the throat dries out so bad. Stay on top of your pain, stay well hydrated ---- I believe that if you do that you will recover in a more timely manner.
