happythoughts 0 #8 June 2, 2009 QuoteWhy does Ray call it Dork Zone dot com? Because somebody may be too f-in serious. I used to read other internet skydiving discussion sites. The most frequent cause of their demise was someone who was "TFS". Someone had been in the sport for so long that they couldn't remember the primary goal - to have fun. Everything was serious and "an issue". Everything was an argument. Sure, safety is serious. But, basically, skydiving is supposed to be fun. I believe that the actual future of the sport is people sitting around a bonfire with their friends. Smiling while they talk about something that they did today. Foolish online antics are probably preferable to the thickening of mud around sticks. Even online.
Krip 2 #9 June 2, 2009 Quote Why does Ray call it Dork Zone dot com? Because he feels threatened by the open forum of dropzone.com and is powerless to stop it. It's a immature attempt at marginalizing the threat. FWIW some people used to refer to another skydiving chatroom "rec skydiving" as Wreck skydivngSome folks even as adults never grow up and regress to the same behavior they used as children. ie Name calling payOne Jump Wonder

A few cases of beer ago there was an interview with Jerry Bird in "Skydiving" mag. The question: "Jerry, how would you describe 'Skydiving?'" The answer:" Skydiving is Having Fun In Freefall With Your Friends." There was more to the interview but that's the part that stuck out the most to me!! Before RW became a competitive event we called it Fun Jumping and we were Fun Jumpers! The "Serious Jumpers" were the Style and Accuracy freaks. Three weeks ago, I was talking with Bird about planning some interesting, fun, and challenging skydives for some events. I was talking about 10 or 20-way speed. He said that he once closed the last corner on a star during 40-way speed. 28 seconds. He has told me about a lot of his competitions, but the thing that stands out the most is how much he smiles when he tells you.
