why don't they do this?

A good friend of mine lost a Stiletto after a chop. It was gone for months. It was lying on the ground with bushes around it - and had faded in places from Teal to almost white in some places. The main was given the OK by PD, and he still jumps it. It looks funky.
I'm not sure about the risers - I'd replace. Main bag etc are still critical components - but everything above the 3 rings is sacrificial - the reserve freebag I'd replace.

Well, I got an RSL, so I prefer that my riser don't brake. A broken riser below the rsl connector ring on the rsl side could get interesting...B|

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

It seems we've gotten off on a bit of a sub-thread here, but just my two cents: if my backside is under a reserve, priority #1 is saving the aforementioned backside. Get to the ground safe (at the DZ where you always land instead of in some field that you've never landed in and might have hidden hazards) and let your buddies worry about getting good line-of-sight on your gear, either from the air or from the ground. Once you're down safe, then you can worry about the main and freebag.

From a time perspective, you'll replace a main canopy or freebag in much less time than it takes to get the cast off.

From a money perspective, you'll replace a main canopy or freebag for much less money than the bill from the emergency room.
