  1. Well I guess I've got 3 1/2 months to learn to swoop this puppy eh? Seriously, I really do need to take it slow on this new canopy as it'll be like nothing I've ever flown before. I demoed the very same canopy type and size in Rantoul. But that was at sea level. There it performed much like my Sabre2 performs here in CO. But the Crossfire2 should/will perform differently at a higher density altitude. I think you're right. I likely needed to specifically ask for differect stablizer colors. The default is likely the same colors at the top and bottom skins. PS: How's your jumping coming along? Is your profile up to date? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  2. If I can't fix the problem with my Sabre2, I'll probably start looking for a Cobalt or a Crossfire2. Yves.
  3. I also jump in CO (my home DZ is about 5k MSL) and currently am jumping a Sabre2 170 (1.35:1). But in the not too distant future I will start jumping a Crossfire2 (still waiting for it to arrive). Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  4. Lotus was a fast turner? Thatts unusual since its the same shape and basically the same design as a Sabre2. On the computer plotter they match up in a lot of areas. The Crossfire2 is a much more aggressive design then the Lotus. Even the Safire has more taper angle then the Lotus. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  5. The more I think about Billvon's wingloading and license type BSR proposal (with the ability to exceed the allowable wingloading with additional training and testing), the more I find myself accepting it if it was to come into effect. God knows it's not perfect (education and testing will not be equal in various regions of the country), but it helps bring more meaning to the various licensing levels and thus make some people strive to achieve a higher license level. And of course it will help prevent some people from flying a canopy which they are not ready for. Now does this mean I'm turning into a canopy nazi? Nah ... I still have evil thoughts in my head concerning demoing some slightly smaller canopies this summer. I've already demoed a Sabre2 150 and a Saffire 149 (both loaded at about 1.5:1 when I wear my camera and yes I did do full altitude hop n' pops the first few jumps). I did pretty well under those wings (mind you I only made five jumps on them). But I really would like to demo a Crossfire2 149 and a Samurai 150 and barring a loss of income (getting fired for spending too much time on DZ.COM) and not getting injured this summer, I do see myself having 400-500 jumps under my belt by the time the fall rolls around (and the higher density altitude conditions here in CO come down making flying a smaller canopy easier). Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  6. The safire2 or omni are not hot rods. They have very reasonable performance. I am actually selling my safire2 169 because it doesnt dive enough for me. Getting a crossfire2 169. The safire2 is comperable to a sabre2 and the omni to a spectre or tri. Dont rule out anything (within reason) before you try it. You could be missing out on your favorite canopy. Hi, Firstly, thanks for posting and not just running out and buying. I know the 116 seems like a cool possiblity, please please consider the following: 1) Theres a huge difference in flight characteristics between the turbo and the batwing. 2) That is a massive downsize - it's never a good idea to downsize so dramatically (and change flight characteristics). I suggest working your way down to that size and type. 3) Have you asked any of the instructors or knowledgable canopy pilots at the DZ if they think you are ready for this type of canopy, or if there is something else out there that will give you what you're looking for and keep it in your skill range? 4) Think you can land a 116 in a backyard, downwind with trees all around it? There a million other questions, but I think most appropriately is the question "Why?". What are you looking to gain over your current canopy? What about switching to something like a Crossfire2, sabre2, etc in the 150 range then moving down from there? I know you're asking about the canopy itself, but no-one here can give you the answers you are looking for until we know what it is that you are trying to accopmplish under canopy. If you're interested. please feel free to PM me to discuss this in detail. ----- Edit ----- FYI - Straight from Precisions website ----- Blue skies Ian Performance Designs Factory Team
  8. I saw that Aerodyne research has launched a new value for measuring canopy ellipticity, namely the planform factor or Pf, by using this formula: Pf=(1-(end cell chord/center cell chord))x(#tapered cells/#total cells)x100 In my opinion this does not give any new understanding of the canopy at all. What I would like is a value for canopy flying characteristics, performance or radicallity, not the planform. I know that planform is one of many variables regarding flying characteristics. Pf is actually misleading in some cases if you believe it would help you make a sound decision regarding flying characteristics (as they claim). Some examples: Crossfire2 21.6 Safire2 16.4 Stiletto 13.3 Sabre2 5.4 Anyway, the idea trying to find a way to calculate flying characteristics is good. Using this formula though.....I would give it an E.
  9. Hi there, I plan to donwsize and I have been flying a Sabre 170 for 350 (I have a total of 415), with a wingload of 1,14. I was wondering if stepping into a Crossfire2 139 would be too much for me at the moment. The other options that I am thinking about are a Safire2 139 or a Sabre2 135, but Would I get bored really soon with those? Some advises??? Fly Kaotik
  10. he ... he ... he ... so does that mean I can put a 150 Crossfire2 in my current container? Cool ... of course not to worry about me downsizing anytime soon as I'm only 26 jumps into my new Sabre2 and it has a lot of zip left in it for me to be learning on (especially since we've yet to experience the high density altitude conditions during the hot summer months). Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  11. I know Aerodyne hired one of PD's former execs about a year ago and some so anything could be possible. I'd heard rumors of a 9 cell line to go head to head against PD's Sabre2/Stiletto and Icarus Safire2/Crossfire2. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  12. The typical 9 cell will have a better glide rate then most 7 cells, but some of the new 7 cell designs like the Spectre will be able to glide just as far as most 9 cells. 9 cells tend to be swoopier then 7's. Most 7's are great canopies for most jumpers that are not looking for a long swoop. Each canopy is desigened different so you may have 7 cells out swooping 9* cells just due to their design. Some of the hottest 9 cell new designs are the Sabre2, Cobalt, Crossfire2 and the Nitro. Some of these are aggressive canopies and some are milder. Hot 7 cell canopies are the Omni, the Spectre, Triathlon v4.0. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  13. haven't jumped the lightning, VX or lotus, or any base canopies, i was under the impression we were originally disscussing the Sabre2, and Crossfire2, my mistake. and by the way, i just had my first cut-away on jump # 475, i don't update my profile like i should, it's said 300 for 6 or 7 months, heck i don't know. i'm not trying to be a canopy guru here, i'm merely trying to give you research information. it's funny that PD would make the remark(s) about "tapered" semi-elipitical, etc...but no other manufacturer speaks in those terms. i've heard people refer to certain canopies in way different terms, so all we have is the data that each manufacturer posts about their equipment. if you ask a question in this forum, such as you did, you've got to know your going to get varying opinions. hope all of this helps. take care, be safe. --Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"
  14. Well seeing as literal interpretation seems to be the theme of the evening, that means you have jumped a Sabre2, Crossfire2, Safire, Stilleto, Lighting, Tri', VX, Hornet, Lotus, and BASE canopies. Not bad for someone who's profile says they have 300 odd jumps. Bleh! I'm going to bed. - Andrew
  15. Technically, they are both elliptical. However, their difference in aggressiveness depends on several factors such as amount of planform taper, trim, angle of attack, etc... Whereas you could put most newbies on a Sabre2, Spectre, or Safire loaded 1:1 with no problems, that same person on a Crossfire2 or Stiletto is going to be flying a much more maneuverable, unforgiving (in handling & opening stability), and twitchy canopy. I'm sure one of the propeller-heads (Yo! Bill!) will be in here soon to give exact details. Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
  16. Hi, I am told by an experienced individual that "any canopy that does not have exactly the same rib section in every cell is elliptical". Given that, what is the real difference between say a Sabre2 and a Crossfire2 other than the degree of taper? What factors contribute to the differences in the ways the canopies behave - given their separate design goals? Many thanks in advance! Regards, - Andrew
  17. Are you thinking the Safire2 instead of the crossfire2? The Safire2 and the Sabre2 are in the same canopy category. Fly it like you stole it!
  18. For one.. there is a huge difference.. the Sabre2 is semi-elliptical and the Crossfire is fully elliptical. I'm yet to jump a Crossfire2 but from a few accounts.. its more radical then the original. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  19. does that mean that safire2-149 will be aproximately like sabre2-150 in size ? and safire2-149 is bigger then safire- 149 ? i though that crossfire2, safire2 are still measured icarus-style, don't they ? is there any official source of info on that ? stan. -- Go fast ! Then go even faster ...
