  2. When you say cross-hares, what you really mean is angry bunnies, right? *** Careful... We don't want PETA all pissed off at us! Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  3. It seems that this has been the question on a lot of topics. There will never be an easy answer, at least not in my mind (other than the thoughtless... just make it illegal). The "at your doorway most likely" part is what bothers me. In Singapore it is illegal to chew gum (can you believe that?!). I think they rescinded that law ( to allow only nicorette), but I will have to dig up the info on that. My point in this illustration is that if we continue to give up our freedoms in the name of protecting ourselves it is very possible that it can go further than most would think. This was not an attempt to justify my position on smoking, only an illustration that if they can stop one thing in the name of saving us from ourselves they can and will stop other things (that some of us are right now thinking will never happen). 4. This is an interesting thread... I find it that way because of some of the comments about justifying the addition and so on.... Yet I see people saying things like "and don't compare it to alcohol." I really don't see any difference in the two. While I am a smoker (and drinker), it seems there is a double standard here.... Before you start flaming me about how you don't go around spilling your drink on me, think about the families of the 16,654 (according to the MADD web site) people that died in 2004 in alcohol related traffic accidents (not to mention the innocent people that they killed). I think the real problem I have with banning smoking, is where do they stop "protecting us from ourselves." While you shouldn't have to breath second hand smoke, where do they stop taking things away in the name of our protection? I remember when they first started banning smoking in the restaurants in my home town. There were a lot of people that said "they will never ban smoking completely." Yet it seems we are headed that way... With all the drunk driving deaths and the associated health problems that arise from drinking... You can bet that the government will have it in their cross-hares (cause soon they will be the only ones with cross-hares) sooner than you think. It seems that we will soon be unable to think at all for ourselves.... Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  5. I think this is a great question.... I finish with my risers (no transition to toggles at the end). I have watched a lot of people do it the other way and have never been able to understand why... I load my Katana 120 right at 2.0/1 and have yet to bust my A** on a landing (with or without wind) when landing rear risers (and yes I understand its just a matter of time till I do). Like you said early on.... I'm sure there is an answer, I just don't know (but sure would like to) what it is. Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!

  8. I'm having problems with Premier Pro 1.5 when I want to transfer back to my camera. I use a Sony TRV-30. When I just "play back" the footage with the camera plugged into the firewire port it plays on the camera just fine. But when I push the record button on the camera I get a blue screen like the camera is disconnecting somehow (it still says dv-in on the blue screen.) I have ALL my other programs shut down. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you fix it? Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  9. I bought a Phillips for our video concession about a year ago. My only complaint was the finalize time (Lew fixed that for me by telling me about using +RW DVD's = no need to finalize.) It works great and is very easy to use. Here is a link to the model we have. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=326459&is=REG Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!

  11. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has deported an Australian citizen who was arrested on Capitol Hill after a bomb scare earlier this week, an immigration spokesman said on Friday. "U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement has removed Wenhao Zhao," said spokesman Michael Keegan. "ICE will not tolerate menacing conduct by visitors to the United States and we will remove anyone who carries on such as he did. Keegan said Zhao was escorted by ICE officials to Australia where he was met by government officials. Zhao raised suspicions on Monday after he stood outside the Capitol for about an hour with two black suitcases and demanded to see President Bush. The area was evacuated, roads were closed and tours stopped. When Zhao would not respond to police, several officers tackled him and dragged him away. Police later blew up one of his bags, but found no explosives or dangerous materials. What did he do that fulfills the meaning according to webster listed below?! Unless there is a gross lack of reporting going on here, these people are going WAY out of their way to justify what they did... Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!

  13. At the risk of sounding like Bill Clinton (definition of "is"). It would depend on your definition of "mistake." Are you performing at 100% of you abilities on the ground and in the air 100% of the time with an AFF student? A mistake isn't necessarily life and death (although it is obvious that it can be) every time it is made. It can be as small as putting a student in a jumpsuit that is little to loose cause he's a big guy, only to have him de-arch and slow his fallrate to the point that you have to work really hard to stay with him (note that I did NOT say "could not stay with him"). But lets use your example of the AFF student. Do I understand you correctly that you can instruct a student on 100 items (without using the SIM, as police don't get to carry their manuel with them) and would have a less than 1% mistake ratio? Remember that a mistake is ANYTHING that is not exactly taught the way it is written in the SIM. The easy answer is YES right? I think most instructors have that ability. Now lets put it in the real world. You have multiple students, asking multiple questions, to which you are expected to not only know all the answerers, but you better say it in a "pleasant" manor (regardless of what kind of day you have had prior). While I'm sure there are people that could get 100% of the questions they were asked right 100% of the time. I believe there are a lot more of us that would allow our ego to say we would be 100% right all the time when in reality we would be doing quite well to be right 99% of the time in the second scenario. The statement that I made in the previous post had more to do with how some people look only for the mistakes in something rather than all the good that is done (which you illustrated with your response quite nicely ).... And less to do with a 1% mistake ratio. Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  14. Do you have any pics of it? I would love to see the mod you did. It sounds like it would fix my concern. Thanks! Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  15. This guy didn't do anything wrong. He might be creepy or weird (consider what is normal.... I think its a setting on a washing machine, but I'm not sure
  16. The FreeZR is held in place on your head by the pads inside (no draw string like the z-1). The strap that goes under your chin is really my only complaint with the helmet. I can (and do) put my helmet on and take it off the the strap still done (I think its to far forward). While it has never given me a problem doing RW, my fear is that it will come of in freefall with the higher speeds of freeflying. I have jumped it while in a sit (if you want to call it a sit) and it rides up on my head. Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  17. I had a cutaway 2 weeks ago. I fly a Katana 120 loaded at 1.9/1. I had at least 4 wraps of line twists (and the spin that induced was wild). When I cutaway I rolled to my left (I was on my back) while pulling the cutaway handle. The three ring from my left shoulder struck the lexan visor on my FreeZR so hard that it broke the visor in the area where my cheekbone is. We have a swampy area at our DZ (and naturally the winds put the spot over it that day). I barley made it to the closest field as it was (I sat in under the reserve at around 2200 feet). I believe that if I hadn't been wearing a full face helmet I would have landed in the swamp (the extra 2 or 3 seconds to recover from the shot to the face would have made me sit in lower). I'm just starting to freefly, and I think I want to get a full face helmet for that as well. Are there any helmets out there for freeflyers other than the bonehead (its way cool, I'm just looking for other options)? Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!

Is it something in the air (no pun intended) or what?! There are two discussions going on right now about low time jumpers jumping camera. see http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1573287;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;guest=12400356 and http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1564545;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;guest=12400356 I'm sure you are the exception to the rule.... blablabla..... At least get all the info you can before you put it on your head (and no I do not mean info about how to work the camera, I mean about what comes with camera flying). Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  19. I think I may have mis-usderstood what you were saying. I completely agree that teaching someone "cause their gonna do it anyway" is not the right attitude. We have found that most of the guys that want to start to soon are freeflyers. With the equipment that is available today, (side mount cameras and so on) there is a false sense of security in the skydiving community that doesn't see the dangers involved with flying camera. If you look in the thread "deployment techniques" you will see a post I put in there about how we start a lot of the new guys that want to shoot video for hire. Most of the low timers bail during the 2-way jumps with me (thats when they see its a little harder than they thought). That was what I meant when I said showing is better than telling. Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  20. I think this is true of any aspect of skydiving. From "Cat C" in AFF to your first AFFI jump (and everything in between). This is also true of anything to do with skydiving. From freefall to packing its all a learned skill. I think that the reason so many jumpers want to fly camera before they are ready is that they don't understand what is involved. By pushing them away (unless your the DZO or S&TA at your DZ) without at least helping them understand that, just because you make it look like all a person has to do is put on the camera helmet and they will magically shoot great video. Are we really helping them (not to mention are we helping the DZ)? There is a lot of hard work involved, and it is not nearly as easy as 99% of up jumpers think (ever heard the term "if ya can't skydive shoot video"). Anyone who actually shoots video for hire knows that to be very untrue. The trick is that the people who do have th ebest attitudes are the ones who are conservative about it, and usually want to wait longer than suggested. Just by trying to push the limits, a jumper has already made his attitude and intentions known.*** Pushing the limits is what we all do (whether we want to admit it or not). The difference is that when most of us push our limits we do it under instruction of someone who has been there before. If we all took the attitude of "no you to new for that." Where would the sport be today. NO I'm not saying that a 100 jump wonder is ready to shoot video. What I am saying is that showing them why is much better than just telling them "your not ready". 21. I meant directly above or in close proximity. We do the lower orbit with the tandem turning the other way. I agree it makes for cool video. Fear has little to do with having a standard that is an attempt to be as safe as we can. See number 5 of my post on the previous page. See number 3 of my post on the previous page. This is where they get the briefing from me. Then see number 7. This is where the Tandem Instructor gives the briefing to them. This is why we do number 6 of my post on the previous page. I can fall faster than most tandems (in drouge fall). I give them the faster fall rate to work with, see how they handle it, and then discuss it on the ground. I agree. All of the video guys at our DZ wear an audible Some would say that is true. I have yet to see a customer say " geez, why didn't you get that shot from above like he did." What I have had happen is customers asking why didn't he get in front of me like in the other video (and yes the other video had his 15 seconds of face time)... We could debate this to death.... I think that when the customer leaves thanking the video guy, and is talking about how they can't wait to show the video to their friends and family, they got what they wanted and what they paid for. Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  22. As and aside - One other thing we look for is a good personality. Tandems pay good money so the video person is part of making it fun and needs to be able to interact with the tandems in air and on the ground. ----------------------------------------------------- I agree, our guys have a set routine (that they come up with) they use for the interview ect, but they still can't sound like they are reading it (unlike me ). -------------------------------------------------------- Oh yeah - They also have to have the ability to NOT MAKE a tandem go low because they got over top of it (they are to never get over top of it period - end of story.....). That WOULD be the last video jump at our place. The TI would see to that before I got a chance. --------------------------------------------------- Same here, the TI'S (understandably) would be kicking ass while I was asking what the heck happened. Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  23. I started shooting video at around 700 jumps (I would have to look to get a better number). I was very lucky that I had a TI who was also a great video flyer (thanks Cajones) that took me under his wing and taught me the ropes. We like people who want to shoot video to start at around 300 to 400 jumps. Its really up to me. The TI'S and DZO at our DZ trust me and know that I would not put someone in the air with them that isn't ready (no that doesn't make us perfect, but it does mean that we try to be as prepared as we can be). As for the jump numbers to do tandems, I am not a TI, but it seems that time in the sport has a lot to do with how well they do (as well as jump numbers ect.). I have seen those people (TI'S) have to deal with some pretty wild stuff (and have great respect for all they have to deal with from students and a-hole vidiots like me wanting them to play in freefall
  24. ------------------------------------------- You mentioned that's what you do with low jump number people. What do you do with, or expect from, the more experienced jumes (ones you don't already know personally? Fuzzy I really haven't had that happen to me. All of our video flyers are home grown. There is a guy who just moved to our DZ from out of state that the DZO told me wants to shoot video, but I haven't really talked to him about it yet. He will have to do at least 1 outside with me and 1 spec with me shooting outside (after we talk about all the stuff that we don't allow). But this guy has 2000 jumps and is an AFFI. Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
  25. I can understand how you could feel that way.... At my home DZ, working for me, the first rule is this. NEVER... AND I MEAN F**KING NEVER... UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BE ABOVE A TANDEM AFTER THEY EXIT TILL THEY LAND. NO EXCEPTIONS IF I SEE IT (and I do all the editing so I will) YOU ARE DONE. NO QUESTIONS ASKED There has been more than 1 or 2 that have left (or told they can't shoot video anymore) our DZ because I wouldn't let them get the shot from above.... I know it looks cool to us... But the passenger is more interested in seeing their face (if you don't think so hangout while their video is being edited sometime). There is no good reason to be up there where the TM can't see you. At some DZ's I'm sure the rules might be different. But at Blue Sky Adventures, the TM responsibility is his passenger. If there is a video guy in the air with him it is the VIDEO flyers responsibility to not be in the way. On 100% of all tandems, the passengers safety comes first, getting the "cool" shot is WAY down the list. The TM's are busy as shit from the time they get on the plane till they get back in the hanger and DO NOT need to worry about where I am flying or what I am doing while I'm in the air with them. (Sorry for the rant, but this subject drives me nuts). Pendejo He who swoops the ditch and does not get out buys the BEER!!
