  1. ffdf I really hate 206 loads. I know it's safe and legal and all but that's a lot of assholes and elbows in one small cabin.
  2. I don't think the Stella keeps a log so it's not too critical and it has a low battery alert. If it does store any info then you might want to keep a spare battery and tools to change it in your kit. That way you can change the battery (hopefully, I haven't seen a Stella) before losing the stored info the way I do on my Neptune 2.
  3. In '79 or so we had a guy who would ride his motorcycle with his rig on the back. One day he got to the dz and his rig wasn't strapped to the seat behind him. He never did find it. Well, the idea of losing your rig scares me.
  4. I've never gotten to jump there, at least not yet, but Roy Fox has told me some stories about the place.
  5. I used to jump a Paracommander into the DZ at Chesapeake Ohio. The last time I was there was about five years ago. Neil drove an hour to pick me up then we drove another three hours only to find they were closed for the day. A guy with a powered parachute had put his card on the terminal's message board so we called him up. We paid him something like $75 each but after all that driving it was worth it to get a jump in, plus it was a memorable jump. That thing climbed slow. No, I mean slow. I could smell the ozone off the power lines and count the gravel on the roof of the K-Mart but the real trip was the north part of the circle. It's all hills and valleys so one moment you had hundreds of feet below you and the next you could almost reach down and pick leaves. During takeoff the thing would sway and twist like you were sitting on a swing which, as Neil said, wasn't right when you could still smell the fresh mown grass. But I think that's the smallest regularly operating DZ I ever jumped a PC at.
  6. In July of 2015 I had a vicious malfunction when my right touggle came loose and wrapped around either a riser or lines just below it. It not only had me perpendicular to the ground but the right side would try to open the collapse and it felt like I was being jackhammered. That night I had a strange and very unpleasant feeling in my head and I started to see lots of floaters and strange spots. In September I had surgery to reattach my retina. But what caused what, which is the horse and which is the cart? No idea. Fortunately I've always been paranoid about detached retinas from boxng and martial arts. Educate yourself on the signs and take it very seriously whether you skydive or not.
  7. We call them our Bidwell Reunion events but anyone is welcome. In fact, I think there are only a couple of us who actually jumped at Bidwell and it really doesn't matter where you're from. We try to have a large get together once a year and lunch once a month. The lunch get togethers are handy in that people show up and have lunch, or they don't, but there's no loss if very few people show up. We were going to eat anyway. So if the idea of sitting around having lunch while shooting the shit about skydiving appeals to you come give us a shot. This month we're meeting at the Cross Lanes Golden Coral at 1pm this Sunday, feb 19th. We usually don't meet on Sunday but we did this time so Tom and Dianne could attend, then something came up so Hantack can't make it anyway, but what're you gonna do? You'll know who we are, we're the ones who are being too loud and wearing skydiving t-shirts. Here are directions from someone who's actually been there. If you have any questions let me know and I'll get right back to you. Bob Church Tom and Bob agreed on Golden Corral at Cross Lanes. You can see it on the left of I-64 as you approach the Cross Lanes exit going West from Charleston. From Charleston appraoching wrstbound, turn left off of the exit ramp and follow the next to leftmost lane onto Goff Mountain Road. The far left lane after you turn left off of the exit ramp takes you back onto I-64 East headed back to Charleston, so be sure to follow the sign to Goff Mountain Road. It bears slightly to the right in front of the Nitro Carpet Outlet then takes a sharp left onto Goff Mountain Road. Golden Corral is about a quarter mile out New Goff Mountain Road. From Huntington, you will bear right off the ramp and move to the left to follow Goff Mountain Road, same as above. Take the next to leftmost lane to Goff Mountain Road and Golden Corral is 1/4 mile out Goff Mountain Road. Did I mention it's on Goff Mountain Road?
  8. Never mind. I feel like by pointing out a very real threat to women's health care I've just painted a target on myself.
  9. I prefer Locomotive Breath.
  10. "IIRC, the only federally funded abortions are for rape, incest, and risk of life of the mother." The only openly federally funded abortions may fall into those categories but a lot of federal money goes to states who then use it to either fund abortions or to replace money that had been earmarked for something else. I don't have a problem with this, but a lot of people do and they're now in a position to do something about it. Fortunately some people are doing more than just denying that it could happen.
  11. Who are you responding to?
  12. "where I divert from the choice crowd mainly is I don't think we should pay for it. But that's not really a choice aspect, it's a generalize public health care issue. But don't let that stop people from trying to bundle up issues to make them more complicated to debate. - and I don't believe in sugar coating it (you are killing 'something' that very well would become a baby. suck it up, that's the choice - and I still believe it's up to the woman) " There's a lot of legitimate worry that the 8% or so of federal money used for abortions will now dry up. De Blasio has vowed that if New York residents lose their federally funded abortions he'll pay for them out of the city's coffers.
  13. "Do you know what the Hyde Amendment is? " I know that it limits FEDERAL money for abortions. It does not prevent states from funding them.
  14. "Fortunately, they do not have to understand it; the only really important opinions were your girlfriend's and her doctor's, who (with your support, which is important) decided to get an abortion. " I wonder how feelings about abortion would have developed if it had stayed that way. What I mean is, I remember the run up to Roe vs Wade and the constant refrain was 'this is nobody's business but the woman's. No one else has anything to do with it so mind your own business." And within a clear and pull's time after becoming legal we got "oh, and you're going to pay for it, right?" I'm not arguing against abortion, just wondering about the affect on those people who were told it was none of their business, then being handed the bill.
  15. "LBJ signed some good legislation into law during his time in office, but he was a very flawed person." I think he's the first person I ever heard referred to as "crazy as a shithouse rat." I've often wondered what sort of President Nixon would have made. He made a lousy King.
  16. Just off the top, the first one who comes to mind is Eisenhower. I was born in 1940 and have always considered LBJ to be the worst person who has been President during my lifetime. The Donald way exceeds LBJ in every category IMO. LBJ signed some good legislation into law during his time in office, but he was a very flawed person. Jerry Baumchen I have very mixed emotions about LBJ. He did a lot of good things, but when he did make a mistake, oh boy..... I admit that my opinion of him went down several points after reading Kittinger's account of meeting him. LBJ called a meeting of lots of different military people including Kittinger based on his years as a POW. After they spoke, LBJ not only had good reason to not amp things up in Vietnam but what I consider an honorable out by taking what they said seriously. But as we all know, he didn't.
  17. No, I have a lot of friends from overseas and they always tried to be polite by suppressing their laughter whenever Carter's name was mentioned.
  18. I'm pretty sure he's the first POTUS to have never held elected office before. But I'm not good at history, so I suppose there may have been an exception in the first dozen or so. Anyone know for sure?
  19. I know it's very different but it sure looks a lot like the first reserve I opened. It was a low mount belly wart.
  20. Two, Jim has one also. It was a team effort, remember? Jerry Baumchen PS) Seatpack went out today via USPS. Do you pack emergency rigs? And if so could I mail mine to you for an i/r?
  21. Sorry, I've misplaced my 11 foot pole. In my late 20s I tried to decide which way I'd go, unwanted child or trying to talk someone into getting an abortion. I had vasectomy which I decided was enough to let me opt out.
  22. The building they attacked was named for Martin Luther King jr. Also, the guy is coming out with a book and they've just guaranteed more sales. http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/02/opinions/protesters-miss-point-yiannopoulos-herbst-gelman/index.html
  23. Well, it would have been an alti, but it looked like an Altimaster 3 but made out of titanium. I'm trying to remember when they came out and I'd like to know how many they made. I was told 250, but have no idea if that's accurate or not.
