  1. This (if you cannot leave them be). In related news: We are contributing members of our local sea turtle patrol and always/also adopt a nest just for fun. A couple years ago, we noticed our nest look almost ready to hatch so we headed out each night for a couple hours at dusk for about 10 days before...EUREEKA! It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life! I teared up, of course. It was just us and 80 little loggerheads under the moonlight scampering toward the sea. SO beautiful! Right up there with floating in a dingy in Alaska next to several humpback whales, and sitting in a kayak in the middle of several pods of dolphins mating.
  2. Speaking of Real Sports and hearing a lot about soccer as of late, the show has done several features on soccer recently, including this week's (probably re-running on HBO now) 6/24 original-air-date episode. We just started watching it (we DVR it)...very interesting. I cannot say how accurate the segment is, however, as a regular viewer of Real Sports I can say the features they have done on sports/industry/business I have personally researched/know a lot about have been pretty spot on (specifically, recent episodes have featured segments on horse racing and dog breeding. ). Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  3. Awesome! I had full in-state academic scholarship as far as tuition goes, but in a po-dunk college town with little in the ways of real money-earning opportunities, I was happy to help offset my cost-of-living "student" loans hawking my game tickets. The best part of game time for me--whilst in school--was the indoor pool was pretty empty. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  4. I represent my university on game days (and other days), and can never understand the sports fan who looks at me in amazement when I reply, "Oh, I don't watch football." I am an alumna who loves her alma mater, and yet somehow that is not credible enough to show my own school spirit on game day. Sports fans can be wackadoodles. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  5. I dislike nearly everything about organized sports with the exception of actually playing them myself (I was an excellent receiver in powder puff football .) I can tolerate watching golf (enjoy playing--have been since I was six). And, ironically I LOVE Real Sports with Bryant Gumble.
  6. I have heard this sort of slick marketing before, and I won't fall for it again! I will definitely buy your book, Peter, and help keep you in the life you are accustomed.
  7. I warned my husband early on that at age 60, all my cares for fashion will fall to the wasteside and it will be nothing but cat sweaters for me. And cat socks. And pants that say, "Meow!". Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  8. Same here! While I am more of a cat person, we adopted a female "sister" for our male dog three years ago. I thought females usually took to men, but this bitch is a mommy's girl all the way! I ADORE her! She is a beast! When people ask what she is, I respond, "Part gorilla. Part wild boar. Part bunny rabbit (she is SUPER soft and so sweet)." She is so happy all the time and loves to wake me up panting her stank-nasty breath in my face with her paws on my arm (she has always had nasty breath, but vet says her teeth/health are great! And no, it is not from eating cat poo. ). If ever there were a model for the phrase "bull in a china shop", she would be said model.
  9. It doesn't after one has enough emergency reserves; most people can elect to keep this fund in their ROTH IRA (and can withdraw those contributions tax-free and without penalty at any time as long as they are not touching the monies earned on those contributions). Your way has to be paid back to a lender and--for most people--keeps them in a far more costly cycle of debt. My way creates a cushion of cash on hand in an emergency, and once debts are paid off one is much more likely to stay debt free. If your way works for you, great! For most people, it would not in the long run, imo. Edited to add: Of course, if one has no reserves and has a specific emergency that is a need (I.e. a car repair and that car is your only means of transportation to work, etc.) said person should use a credit card option vs. taking any money from any retirement accounts (other than the fore-mentioned ROTH IRA that would be tax & penalty-free up to the personal contribution amount). But, having one's own liquid cushion should remain the goal thereafter so next time one does not have to borrow--cash advance or charge or whatever--from a cc and create more debt. My free advice/opinion ends here. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  10. This is why so many never get out of debt. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  11. I have to concur with Andrea. Continue to pay installments whilst building an emergency fund. I made sure we had or eight-months reserves before tackling student loans, car loan, mortgage...What is great for the psyche is knowing you will be OK should something God-forbid happen to you (and cause you even more debt if you have nothing to fall back on in the interim). FWIW, I am 33 and have been debt-free for almost eight years now save a bit on a very low-interest mortgage. We agree that peace of mind is everything and being debt-free is an important part of that. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  12. Then, clearly you are not listening. The third move is unavoidable whether she goes to you or someone else. The fourth move is just a couple houses down in the same village. Seriously, nothing to worry about, my dear.
  13. If this is something you have been successful at before (not a new venture), then the Suze Orman disciple in me would say purchase the camera (the thing needed to work/make money) and then--as long as you have your eight-months liquid reserves--put the remainder toward your debt. 16. I like boy's names for girls and vice versa; I think many are much better for the opposite sex. Exception being: I played volleyball against a girl named Michael. I did meet a Jamaican boy once with my same first, middle and last name. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
