  1. Well, anything mechanical is body position so, yes, to answer the question. I've never seen you fly nor have I seen the video so I can't judge...your instructors can help you with this. Something that helped me out when I was a student was arm and leg checks. If you're moving in ways that you shouldn't be take a second to bring your hands to your ears and back out again and tap your feet together...it helps create symmetry.
  2. part of the problem is that not all dzs up here are open year-round. and then the ones that are open are dependent on weather. in the upstate new york area i can tell you the weather is not consistent enough for more than the odd jump or two + some hnp's.
  3. do you have a dz at home where you learned to jump? you could always put your rig on order and send it there...itll wait for you when you get home.
  4. certainly would've been nice. anyways my thoughts on the video: the whuffo comments were hillarious...kind of bugs me in some ways but also have to remind myself not everyones a skydiver and don't know any better. i feel like a lot of people watching this may get the impression that there are only a couple of wingsuiters even out there...like it's some kind of evil kinevil shit to jump a wingsuit. (as opposed to focusing on the fact that he took a dock on luigi under canopy...which is certainly some evil kinevil work there!) i'm glad jeb can get some airtime and will hopefully help get him the money he needs for the big jump. i'm curious to see what people think about if we are all going to be jumping without canopies 100 years from now? who knows what the technology will let us do...free fall until 5ft above the ground and then turn on the anti-grav device?
  5. I never knew of this before. This is Awesome! I hope it's the start of something more mainstream. Wouldn't this make a great TV station. it would indeed! i would pay to have this channel as part of my cable package. regardless i hope the beta goes through and they get the site going with a little bit more content.
  6. i cant imagine it would be too difficult to freefly with booties or an rw suit...would it really change your flight that much? to my understanding the booties give you more leg power but i suppose after the adjustment period it would be fine. any experienced FF'ers out there can give some input?
  7. I have also had good experiences with the USPA. Every email I have sent has always been responded to in a timely manner. My 2008 SIM also came with my first USPA card very quickly after I ordered it in December 2007. Also, I got my second USPA card (with my A license on it) probably about 2 or 3 weeks after sending in my proficiency card. Regardless of whether you have a negative opinion of them, would you rather have a government body governing the sport?
  8. basically: relative work is flying relative to others during freefall. this includes formations, turning points, etc. freeflying is flying other ways other than on your belly...so sitflying, kneeflying, backfly, head-down, atmonauti, etc.
  9. sorry for the newb question but what do you mean by slider kill-line?
  10. i am no pro by any means, as well...but if you get some video and compare how strong the relative wind felt on your back when you're backsliding versus what it looks like on camera that will help you gauge how much further to lean back. from what ive learned in the few ff jumps i have, i get the impression that a lot of it is learning to feel the relative wind in a different way. think back to your AFF days when you were learning to not backslide in belly flying. it feels like you have your feet straight like in a track but they're clearly not! i think you get my point. good luck!
  11. that's interesting! never thought about that before...hmm well I guess I'll be that guy who says it'd be awesome to fly a giant penis.
  12. @ Jake: I just realized that BASE game is for PC only so I can't play. @ everyone else: Dunno if it's worth it to buy an actual PS3 for just a game! I'd much rather stick with Just Cause for the 360 (dope skydiving in that game as well!). Hollywood Video doesn't rent PS3's...anyone know if blockbuster does?
  13. that older game was based on some lame button mashing timer system. this game is a stark contrast to that one...you have free control of body position and aerial movement in the game. it takes advantage of ps3 SIXAXIS controller scheme which has built in accelerometers. so not only do the two control sticks serve as axis controls but pivoting the controller also affects control. there's also accuracy landing and style point systems for doing bigways/swoops/freestyle-routines/etc. personally i won't judge till i rent it. but that's just me. @ freak accident: thanks for linking that, I always forget this forum doesn't do it automatically.
  14. Umm...I may have to buy a PS3 for the winter months: http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Games/Go_Sports_Skydiving
  15. Hey guys, I've done a search which yielded nothing. Any idea where I can find videos of the 2007 Collegiate Nationals? Specifically I'm looking for videos of the winners of the VRW section.
  16. As a newcomer to the sport it makes me happy to see people with your attitude. I love meeting experienced jumpers who are considerate of people of different skill levels. Like you said everyone has a beginning at some point. To meet a skygod who thinks his shit don't stink is a complete turnoff to be frank. Blue skies, Andrew
  17. Hi there! Feel free to email me andrewgarcia86[at]gmail.com also you might enjoy this movie: http://youtube.com/watch?v=roDEyvjs-hg
  18. not sure what kind of canopy you're flying right now and how many times you've downsized so far but smaller canopies certainly burn altitude much faster. when i was doing AFF my instructor had downsized to a xaos 78 or something like that and i overheard her saying how it would open and then a few seconds later she was on the ground ;) . i think you get the gist.
  19. Hi there! I recently started jumping down in Florida to avoid the cold but I live in New York so I'm in sort of the same predicament. From what I understand the Ranch in new york is a great DZ to be at. Check the USPA DZ listing or use google to check out DZ's nearest you that you may be interested in. Most of them have websites detailing their aircraft and facilities. You never know what the vibe will be like until you get there so try visiting the nearest ones to you and you might find what you're looking for. The only other dz i've jumped at is EndlessMountain Skydiving in Penn. which is probably way far from you (but I recommend them all the same). It's about 2.5 hours from upstate New York where I live. Also bear in mind you may want to call ahead of time and find out if they are jumping this time of year (only some DZ's are year-round). good luck! Andrew
  20. Saving up for my first container! Just picked up a used triathlon 160 and a used amigo 172 reserve. I expect to order a brand new wings and aad in the next 2 months or so.
  21. agreed! i was jumping a student vector rig for a while. for most belly flying or even some backflying its fine, but like others have mentioned its not suitable for freeflying in general. a few times attempting to sitfly ive had the reserve flap smack me in the back of the head.
  22. transitional slide would be a good topic. as would terminal velocity and the kinetics of deployement.
