  3. Not in the city, but right across the Hudson. Planning on going to the Ranch this weekend. Send me an email or IM if you wanna go and need a ride.
  4. Since you mentioned that this is for your children's education, I assume you are speaking about a Sec 159., tax-deferred education plan. There are many on-line options to have your funds go directly into any number of investments including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or (if you are so inclined) derivative investments. The online brokers vary by level of service, ease of use, and fees. Some of the popular online brokers include: Vanguard Ameritrade Charlesschwab etrade If you select this as an option, you can skip the immediate transfer into your cash account to put the funds directly into one of your selected assets.
  5. I think it depends on which school you're applying to. If you're going for a top 10 school, it might be worth the investment as the admissions for these schools are highly competitive and a higher score may give you a competitive advantage. If not, I'd check the average GMAT score of the current student body and decide whether you can get by with just a Kaplan book.

  7. I received a notice in the mail from a US District Court Settlement administrator which claims I am eligible for an estimated 1-3% of all foreign purchases on VISA/Mastercard. I'm not sure if it's legit, but I want to look for the case and read the settlement. Since it's a federal court, I thought there would be an easy way to do this, but I was wrong. Has anyone else received this notice? Does anyone know how to look up a case in a Federal District court?
  8. Yea that's true. If your AGI is less than $5,100 then a student loan interest deduction wouldn't do you any good. But then if that's the case, you've got bigger problems. Also one other clarification, the deduction applies only on interest PAID not accrued, so you won't be able to take a deduction while you're in school unless you're paying the interest as well. Most people I know let the interest accrue until you begin repayment after graduation and have a full time job.
  9. Yes, Payments on a student loan will be paid to the school directly and you can get a refund for housing etc. One benefit to taking out the student loan as a form of financing is that student loan interest is tax deductible. If you were to finance the purchase with credit card debt the interest would not be tax deductible. In addition, interest rates have been falling recently so you might get a good rate. Though I would wait until after the next Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meeting on the 18th when most analysts expect a rate cut.

  13. Another potential hangup is if the target is being acquired by a PE firm which it was trying to fund a large piece with debt, the debt markets aren't very friendly now which would increase the probability that the deal won't close. Many of my deals have died in the past few weeks because of the poor debt market and some deals that were signed, closed with bridge debt rather than the debt structure originally planned. At the end of the day, seems the market is pricing in a probably of a deal not getting done.
