  4. risers come with the rig. a friend had an issue with brake fires on a javelin, and was told by derek thomas that the keepers for the tip of the toggle are tight when new, but tend to curl around a bit with wear, resulting in a loose toggle. the solution was a row of stitches on the keeper to tighten it up again. no more brake fires! 13. i don't see the closing loop at all, did it break? did the fingertrap come undone? what material are they made of? were they properly trapped and knotted? hard to tell what happened from the photo. 15. okay, it looks unanimous, i'll bring a big box of beer to the dz this weekend.
  16. I took Dave Dewolf's rigger course in January of this year, packed about 20 or so for people on the DZ and had my first save on Thursday. The jumper had me pack it again, and paid up with a nice bottle of tequila. It's a great feeling! I do have a question though.... would a rigger be exempt from buying beer for this particular first? iPhone Apps

had an idea for an app that would be cool on the dz to locate cutaway mains, freebags or jumpers landing off. it would require the iphone 3GS though. basically, the user would launch the app and point their phone at the object/person they wanted to locate and record a bearing and location. another person (or persons) would go to a different location and do the same thing. the data would then be merged (using bluetooth or a lan connection) and a point of intersection calculated to give a starting point for the search. one person could do it alone if they jumped into a vehicle and moved around to get more readings, but obviously it would be better if you took a reading from multiple points simultaneously when the object was close to landing. any programmers out there? i'd buy it! actually, i hereby patent this idea and if anyone uses it, i get a cut. 18. i'll play! looks like she has some sort of continuous riser thing going on, and her chest strap runs right to the container. hard to tell, but it might be a 2-ring release system as well. 20. i heard from a pilot that if things are going badly, fly as far into the crash as possible. in other words, don't give up, keep flying. if nothing else, it will keep you busy. "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001
  21. i just did the 'no-sew' fingertrap thing about half an inch from the eye. i made the fixed end as tight as i could, and then i tightened the removable end tight around the body of the tool so that it would stay i the groove, but i didn't have to fight with it to get it off. 22. back in the day (early 90's) when i was still in the commodity relocation engineering business, i had to make a delivery in north carolina. while waiting, i went to the lunch room for some food and a smoke. i noticed that there were two, one was bright and clean, the other one, not so much. i figured that was the smokers room so i went in, grabbed a paper and started reading. lunch time came and the place started filling up, but i wasn't paying attention. after awhile i looked up and noticed i was the only white guy in the room. it wasn't official, but segregation obviously still exists, or it did then. 24. i made one for myself, out of brass. i found an appropriate diameter rod at the hardware store and cut a piece slightly longer than the width of my hand at the base of my fingers. i made two marks on it, so that one was between my 1st and second finger, and the other between the 3rd and 4th where i wanted it to groove. another way to look at it is i wanted the rod supported across my whole hand, with one finger outside the lines at either end and two between them. to cut the grooves, i chucked the rod into an electric drill, braced is on a bench, turned it on and held a file against it to cut the grooves for the line. this is why i went with brass, stainless is too hard to work this way. a drill press and a better file would probably make the stainless workable. i made the line out of cypres cord. of course, i could have bought a new one for $20 and saved myself some work, but it was winter and there aren't any gear stores handy. plus it was a custom fit! it lasted about 2 years before i broke it. 25. that depends on too many things to give you an answer online! canopy size and type, wingloading, winds, experience level all come into play. your best resource is an instructor at your dz who knows you and can watch you. you could probably ask for a radio for real-time guidance as well. bottom line, as always, talk to your instructors.
