  1. I couldn't agree more. Some of them have a lot of years and thousands of jumps, too. So, here's an idea: Why not teach students, at some point before they move out from under your wing, about why it might be important in their future as up-jumpers to not talk to skydivers who are students? Basically, you could get the idea into their heads before they become "that guy". A potential secondary benefit is that it would be a good time to talk about how in the future they should respond to new jumpers' questions with "have you talked with your instructor, and what did your instructor say"? --- For what it is worth, I'm a beginner and not an instructor, etc., etc. SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

  4. I make no assumptions with the people on the plane. I ask for pin checks before boarding the aircraft, or in flight only if the person is a rigger or they jump the same container that I jump. Only once has someone started to check my rig without asking and I had to ask them to stop. 6. Yep, you could say "just use the Force", and it would be just as successful as the 45-degree "rule". When I hear it, I tell the young'un to do what they were taught by their instructor and then go talk with their instructor about this 45-degree theory...with the hopes that the REAL instructor will debunk or approve the method. Debunking seems to be the most common result. SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

  16. BUT, an even more significant benefit that seems to be overlooked is that the canopy will be overhead sooner during turn recovery than with a single-toggle turn. Need to avoid a serious obstacle close to the ground? Better to have the canopy overhead when you contact the ground than to have swung out from underneath it. Or am I misguided here? 19. Your ear will already be cutting down the perceived decibels during freefall (amazing invention, the ear) to protect itself. Now, if you're skydiving where it is quiet...that's another problem. 21. True. And, there are some good "discussions" on this in the Instructors forum. On the other side of the issue, my fear for students fresh off AFF is that they are now self-supervising and grab a new helmet with comfort and coolness in mind...not safety. Can you see your handles, etc. They don't think of this because they don't have the body of experience that an instructor has. Being cleared to self-supervise is not the same as being cleared to make good decisions without input from experienced instructors. Some young jumpers see that first solo as an arrival at a point where they no longer have to be taught. I just happen to see it differently. That, is why a statement like "...once you're finished with AFF..." doesn't make sense unless you qualify it with your statement above about an instructor needing to see your face. I think we agree at a basic level. SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)
