    Jump Documentary

Hi All I have heard about a jump documentary playing at a number of Canadian film festivals (www.jumpdoc.ca) I know that it is playing in Toronto this Thursday the 12th, but I don't know where. Is anyone from dropzone.com going to see this? If so...where is it being held, and what time? Thanks. What goes up, must come DOWN!!!

    Moving to the US

Would it be possible to get a link to an apartment rental website, at least then it'll give me a figure I can use to estimate my cost of living expenses for an apartment that I feel that I can live in. I'll be sure when I visit to stop by grocery stores for food prices. Thanks for your advice, and I'll certainly start hunting Monster for jobs. What goes up, must come DOWN!!!

    Moving to the US

By training, or by degree? Getting a work visa isnt that straight forward unless you are a licenced professional in Canada, and then get a TN Visa (have a look at http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1274.html#15) The H1B is another option, but its more work for emplyers. Note that both these visas require you to get the job BEFORE you move to the US. It's by training, I just went to college for my accounting certificate, and never managed to get to university for my degree (too damned expensive) I know I'll have to get some sort of Visa before I move there. I'll be sure to speak with an immigration agent just to make sure everything is legit. It's gonna be a tough move to get there, and having to find a job before I leave...well...maybe I can do that when I visit. It seems to be tradition for a bunch on Canucks around here to pack up and head to Z-Hills for christmas, so I think that'll help me get familiar with the DZ, and maybe I can even arrange for a couple interviews. Moving to the US

Hi All I'm interested in moving to the US (from Toronto, Canada). In particular, I wanted to move to Florida, and get away from cold winters and only 6 months of jumping. I thought I'd ask here any opinions of the job market currently in that area. I'm an accountant/bookkeeper by training. What are the main industries in that Area? What is the cost of living? Rent for a small apartment? Food & fuel costs, etc? What sort of salary should I be looking for to have a reasonable living? Although I'm still very far away from getting a job skydiving, it is something I would like to work towards, and I have heard Florida is a significant hot spot for skydivers. I think my plan would be to quit my current job...move, and start hunting for work down there. Is that practical in the current job market? Would it be better to find a job before I move (considering the 2000 mile distance) Maybe there's a DZ there that needs a full time bookkeeper. You input is appreciated. Thanks. 8. Who's worse...the people that buy that garbage...or the people that sell it. I say...the people that see a way to make money...legally...is fine by me (it is a free capitalist market afterall) My concern is with the disturbing people that actually want to buy this disgusting stuff. But hey...at least it's harmless... What goes up, must come DOWN!!!
  9. I'm actually in Abu Dhabi right now (not far from Dubai). The only dropzone that I found in the UAE was www.uaqaeroclub.com. I'd be jumping there today except it's too far away. (About $100 by taxi one way) I don't know much about the DZ other than the website, and a few comments I've received from it. I'd love to get the chance to jump there, but it's just too much to get there. Sorry I couldn't have been of more help. What goes up, must come DOWN!!!
  10. You bring up an interesting point with the comparison to insider trading. Some measure should be taken to ensure that the information was legally obtained. Any person who illegally gives out information that is illegal, he is the one who should face the consequences. If a reporter didn't know that the information was secret, then he should have no concern revealing his source. Should the reporter choose to not reveal this source, then there should definitely be a penalty, both to the reporter, and the station/paper. I think the most appropriate charge here though would be interfering with a criminal investigation. Not sure the consequences of it, but I think it involves jail time. We can't blame the reporter for distrubiting information that was illegal, if he didn't know it was illegal, but like you said...reporters should suck it up. What goes up, must come DOWN!!!

  12. It does create revenue of course. All that the company needs is about a 1-2% response rate. If they get that, then usually is justifies the use of the medium. It's amazing what can be done to get around the Do Not Call Registry. The following companies do not have to follow the do not call registry (if I remember correctly) Government (in any way shape or form, including voting) Companies you've done business with in the past (including your satellite company) Non for profit agencies Any kind of willing agreement to be allowed to be called (this one is the kicker that has alot of wonky loop holes) Here's my best tip, if you don't want telemarketing calls, don't have a phone. If you want a phone, live with the consequences. What goes up, must come DOWN!!!

  17. I'm no expert here, but I've heard that gasoline grade oil is only a small percentage of the use of actual oil. I've been told that oil's primary use is in plactics. If the US is in war over oil, the fuel part of it is a very small part. (it's just the one that most people see) But what the hell do I know...let me just sit in my corner with my glue. 19. As a person who's been on the hiring side, I have some tips that can help. (keep in mind, that I'm in business, and that's how I'll write this. I have no idea what sort of job you are applying for) A few things about interviews in general. Once they call you in for an interview, they are already impressed with your qualifications. The interview is just a personality assessment, and also a means for the interview to judge how well you understand the position and it's duties. Pre Interview. 1. Research. Be sure to read up on the company. You need only spend about 30 minutes, but get an idea of what they do, and any recent products they've just released. This will show them that their company is important (as though only a fool wouldn't have heard of them before) 2. Understand the Position. Read through the job description a few times and get a thorough understanding of what is involved. It sounds like you are just out of school so what I recommend is preparing some stories of projects you've done in school that directly relates to the duties that you will be performing at the new job. 3. Dress for success. You should try to look your absolute best, but also try to wear something that makes you feel comfortable. You don't want the feeling of being uncomfortable coming across during the interview. During the Interview 1. Be CONFIDENT. This cannot be stressed enough. You need to be absolutely confident in yourself and your abilities. Your confidence will be stressed in the manner in which you speak, and even your posture. And of course, a firm handshake is always a good thing. 2. Be Honest. Honesty always goes a long way (unless you stole from you previous employer, were fired, and brought up on charges...you may just want to leave that part out...) Just tell the interviewer like it is, but also always try to make yourself sound like to "good guy". 3. Be sure to site specific things that you have done in the past that will make you a great addition to their team. 4. RELAX. Just like skydiving, you need to relax, but you also need to focus. You can't have you mind racing 100 miles an hour, you have to make sure you are thinking clearly. My boss used to call it being "scatter-brained". When you are speaking, make sure you have a clear linear structure to your sentences. Don't feel the need that you always need to be talking, if you need a moment to think about your answer, then take a moment, it will show your boss that you do take the time to think things through. 5. Strenghts and weaknesses. You can be sure that he will ask about this. Your strengths should be easy to list, be proud of them. Your weaknesses however, can be more difficult to get across. Find a weakness, but also state your methods for overcoming that weakness. For example. If you are not great with computer, but you are taking a part time course to improve. it shows that you are trying to over come your weaknesses. Being able to recognize and have a plan to overcome your weakness if very important for long term employment, as it also helps you grow and develop. (just think back to when you were learning to skydive) 6. Ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions either during or after the interview. Key questions to AVOID at this point. How much does it pay? What are the benefits? Ask those types of questions once they are more serious about the offer. (be sure though, to have a keen understanding of what the position is worth, because most employers to ask you what you want to make) Some example questions. What sort of growth opportunities exist with the corporation? Has the company considered expanding their product line? Delving into an entirely different industry? You can see how these questions are worded. You want to show that you are interested about the future of the company, and how you can become successful within it. I think I've gone on and on now, so I'll stop here. (I'm not even sure what I've wrote anymore, I've been writing it, as I've been working) Anyone else feel free to comment on my advice. Good luck, I'm sure you'll do great. Blue Skies. What goes up, must come DOWN!!!

    Techy Question

You could try saving it as a different file format (like tiff) it might help. It'll also split the pages so you'll be able to e-mail them while still remaining within your limit. I'm not really a techy either...but it might work. What goes up, must come DOWN!!!

  24. I think most generic computer repair/maintenance shops charge $50/hr (at least around here) so I think offering him $50 would be reasonable, 30 minutes of time, plus the trouble of coming over. But if he's a friend of yours, then the visiting part shouldn't really be a problem. What goes up, must come DOWN!!!
