  1. I just read an article in the NY Times about the research indicating alcohol is carcinogenic. Apparently there is an enzyme produced as part of the processing of alcohol that depending on your genetic makeup can sit around in the body for a while or be rapidly consumed. The "sit around" people are more likely to get cancer IIRC. The article didn't go into a lot of detail on the important "HOW MUCH more likely are they to get cancer". One way to express an answer to that question is the common "how much will changing my ways change my expected lifespan"? I drink 3-4 beers a week. If I reduced that to one, would I gain 1 week in expected lifespan? 1 month? 1 year? I dunno. I don't see a reason to change my life based on any of those values, but having some data would be nice.
  2. Street (I watched the Golden Globes last night. I am 99% the pianist was playing this at one point)
  3. I wondered that too, the poster has a short post history but it goes back 6 years, one alludes to being in the military, which makes sense, as military planes are the only ones I know that can pressurize and still have doors that can be used to skydive from. Not sure what prompted the question, as you would think ops for military would have standardized a long time ago on procedures, but maybe there are some new ideas for pressurizing on flights that are being debated.
  4. Congrats David! As you are on your way to figuring out, finding a career you can love pays so many dividends. I couldn't afford to start skydiving until I was in my 30s, but now I have the funds to do whatever skydiving I want, and I work in a tech career where there are plenty of days when I say "I can't believe I get paid to do this" (there are also days when I say "fuck fuck fuck" but we won't dwell on those)
  5. wikipedia has this for applications: which I found by googling "faraday wave" since I had no idea what they were. The vibrating puddle in Jurassic Park is what popped into my mind. Not sure if that is technically a faraday wave though.
  6. I've been thinking on getting a smart watch for fitness, deciding between the Fenix 7 and Epix2 (plus sapphire glass or not). Anyone compared them and chosen one or the other? If you have sapphire glass Epix do you find it dim?
