  1. Tom Huff died a few years ago. he was a HERD member. shouldn't be too hard to get hold of Dave DeWolf, thats his repack on the card. he may know if it's legit(probably is)
  2. lots of info here : projectpi.skydiveworld.com Parachutes Inc. opened the drop zone in 1963
  3. my friend who is 65, used to jump in the 70's and 80's. his last canopy was a Para Flite XL Cloud(260 Sq ft). he wants to start jumping again using new gear. He was leaning towards an MC5. but i think thats a bit overkill (370 sq ft) for his 200 lb frame. PLUS all the mods that would be needed to convert this rig to sport use (cypress installation and hand deploy pilotchute). any suggestions on gear for him . he is looking for something conservative as far as landings and openings.
  4. if i recall, it was Para Flite that tested the Dixon pencils and testing showed they were the least destructive. would've been around 1982 when Manley Butler was head of engineering.
  5. you can get good results with even the cheap tools. the skill of the operator is the key. DONT try and set them with just one whack.it takes several smaller hits to properly set snaps.if the "floor" of the socket/stud is bent during the setting process , you have overset the piece, it will fail . best result is for the "floor " of the socket/stud to be flat.also, test to see if you can rotate the pieces after setting, if you can , then they are NOT set, you must set them some more. but dont overdo it
  6. i heard that Doug Angel passed on Dec. 31. he was an instructor/jumpmaster at P.I. Lakewood and Orange. he also taught at Ripcord Para Center before opening up Skydive East.
  7. people are just flat out IDIOTS. bitch and complain about the opening shock , better than dying.i once got complaints about line twists on a round reserve, when the user got into a flat spin and the sentinel fired at 1000 feet. LOL
  8. manleys mini 3 ring had a round ring that was equivalent to an RW 2 ring EXCEPT that it had the thickness of a big ring. people in the field copied it except they actually used rw 2 rings (thinner) and THAT resulted in stretching. the original mini 3 ring did not stretch.
  9. Manley Butler "invented " the first mini 3 ring system as part of Para Flite's "Swift" harness/ container in 1981 or 82.
  10. i got a twin needle Sirubu dba515 (knockoff of a singer 312)off ebay for $55. it needed a new motor, but i already had one.
  11. in 1970 , Steve Snyder came up with a single point release for conventional rigs with a belly wart. his design was rather complicated using several cables .it never went past the prototype stage however. Earlier, in the early 60's there was an article in Skydiver Magazine about a jumper who had converted 2 shot capewells that could be released with the pull of a handle mounted on the chest strap.
  12. No KEITHBAR. those are made By The Chute Shack. owned by a former ParaFlite rigger.
  13. i am NOT looking to make them ,i just want to buy a couple
  14. while that website works, he is NOT responding to my inquiries.i did google it and he's the one i contacted.
  15. anyone manufacturing monkeyfist handles for pilotchutes?? i need some
  16. if you're looking for a "tuffet" contact nathan taylor . i believe he is at national parachute test center in florida.
  17. does a soft freefly handle have any sort of stiffener in the tuck tab(i.e. plastic), or is it just webbing/tape?
  18. Anyone know who i can buy one off? i will have my local rigger install it.
  19. a 26 ft conical(or any "unmodified") will oscillate.sometimes you will hit the ground during a downward oscillation.my advice would be to go ahead and release the 4 line, it will make the canopy more stable.
  20. personally, there is nothing more reliable than a canopy packed in a DIRECT bag.this thingy has a direct bag BUT once the canopy is out , it is still in a deployment sleeve, which then must be pulled off the canopy Via pilotchute.Until that happens, the canopy will not open(high speed malfunction).I assume the reason for the sleeve (and the slider) is to cut down the opening shock. but when you are dealing with 800 to 1200 ft it also eats up altitude, which in turn gives you less time (and altitude) to get an open reserve.
  21. Para Flite's Lissaman airfoil(7808) was flat from the b LineAttachPoint(L.A.P.) to the tail. it curved upwards from the B L.A.P. to the A L.A.P.. the lissaman also was much shallower at its thickest point than comparable flat airfoils of the same size.
  22. reinforcing the tail really isnt about keeping lines from tearing off.its about keeping the canopy from ripping at the shortest steering line, usually the inboard most one. Strato Stars were initially made without a reinforced tail, but as more jumps were accumulated on a canopy we saw them ripping at the inboard most steering line.and so Para Flite started reinforcing the tails all across the canopy
  23. try a military c-9 with a ballistic skirt spreader LOL
