It is fortunate that not every one knows the backroom politics that go on in D.C. In fact the challenge to NPS based on Congressional funding and the intent of 36 CFR has nothing to do with efforts by the ABP or any other "big name" BASE folks presiously mentioned in this thread. The NPS is responding to threats of funding oversight and committee inquiries. If you think otherwise you are mistaken. Even when Dept of Interior approves the final NPS "use" policy there will be a battle to be fought. ----begin---- That is an awful lot to take credit for, but I do think some credit is due to the ABP. I know of no other individual or group that has put forth the effort to lobby congressmen or the NPS to ultimately remove (though still only from the draft document) section 8.2.2.7. Actually the following was removed because of contested compliance with 36 CFR 2.17(a)(3). How do you tell a fellow BASE jumper when to double check their actions? I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. How do you tell someone that you know you are concerned about what they are doing without lecturing or pissing them off? Especially if they are more experienced than you in one particular facet of parachuting. Do you nag? Do you threaten? Do you ignore them? Manship never sought publicity for the number or type of jumping he was accomplishing. When I suggested we get a news article about his up coming 2000th jump ... he got really mad and said he wanted nothing of that. With Manship it was easy to miss the point of "why" he was jumping and focus on the numbers. I guess he believed that seeking fame for BASE jumping was not in the true spirit of the sport. So when someone asks me my "numbers" I just usually say, "about 30." Finally, I believe that if you really care about numbers and how you rank in the BASE community you are really missing the point. Don't know if I got that right or not from Manships example.(??)

I am very sad to say that my best friend Tom Manship lost his life last night during an antenna jump. For those of you lucky enough to know him I am truely sorry to have to give you this news. Yep about 30 minutes of coverage on KOVR. They reported he had been hanging there since 6:45pm.

Ok I don't know how to do this other than just saying it openly. Please please cool it on the Green Monster aka FH bridge. There have been too many incidents in the last 2 weeks. If you go out there the chances are you are going to get busted. I have it on darn good authority that special attention is being focused on this object due to recent events. So no matter how many times you've jumped it ... no matter how cool you think you are ... no matter if you are "local" ... please stay off the frigining bridge. Please give it awhile to cool down. Thanks!

I wish I had read this post before I had the mod done. I have to echo what BPS said about observations. I'm using a BJ310 with the ZP foreskin and weight 173-183lbs. Before the mod it was very easy to flair and snatch a landing. The turn performance was also better. After talking with Marty I'll start a little higher in the flair and anticipate the landing a little better. I can't say I was pleased with a slider up jump I did a few weeks ago off the Green Monster(730') ... 130 degree left. Of course not being that experienced it was probably me and not the rig. I'll give it a few more jumps(10+) and if it keeps giving me fits maybe I'll have it changed back to the orginal setup.
