I am in complete agreement w/ya!! Had a similar situation after I had my first reserve ride last yr at Chicks Rock. My confidence went up tremendously as I realized that when it comes down to go time, I can do what I need to do to get myself back on the ground safely. I also had the similar frustrations that you did in my office @ work. Most whuffos will never understand why we do what we do and why we are so passionate about it and I have found that wasting my breath trying to explain myself doesn't benefit them or me very much (it is quite exhausting actually!!). Skydiving forever changed my life the day that I made my first tandem jump (Nov. 11th, 2004). I'd been through a very painful separation and was headed towards divorce that year. I decided on a whim to make a tandem jump for my birthday and my parents got me one as a b-day present. That jump forever changed my life as it was the first day I chose to embark on this amazing adventure that is skydiving!!! Had I not found skydiving, I wouldn't have met all of the amazing people I've met and travelled to all of the great drop zones I've been too. My self esteem would still most likely be at an all time low (depression probably would have overtaken me completely), I may have even reconciled with my ex husband, had kids with him and ended up being an unhappy, very unfulfilled person. Skydiving gave me the confidence to realize that I can do whatever it is I set my mind upon, that I can be (and am) happy in and of myself, and that I didn't have to settle for mediocrity ever again. I learned more than ever that life is far too short and too precious to not be living each day as if it were my last, and I don't think I would have learned anything of these lessons so readily had I not found the sport at this stage in my life (or it found me, not sure). I believe that everything in life happens for a reason and I am so grateful to have come to this place and look forward to the many adventures ahead of me in the big blue skies!!!! "Sex.... Hummm, downwinder... Been there done that to. The windmarker was actually stuck and I didn't realized thet until I was to low to change landing direction. Jump 300 or so: (Skydive Chicago) Tried to get back from a long spot, decided to go for it, ended up too low to turn, didn't make the DZ and downwinded it on the pavement in 15+mph winds. I thank my gloves on that day, when I got up, they were shredded but my hands were fine. I did almost the same thing just recently when I was jumping out @ Sydney Skydivers in Picton. Spent so much time trying to make it back that when I got there, I didnt have enough altitude left to turn and had a nasty downwinder that left a hole in my jumpsuit and bruises on both of my knees. I have two big ones; The first one being anxiety on exit. I'd get so damn anxious and completely freak out, and end up flailing out the door. My ex bf started getting me to hang out in the door with him for a second or two, take a slow deep breath in, let it out slowly and just relax. It helped me soo much (still does!)!! A second issue that I still have from time to time is on landing getting lazy (a bit freaked out too) and sliding in on my knees instead of my feet. I really have to consciously think/say to myself "land on your feet" sometimes, as otherwise I just go back to my knees.

I made my first tandem jump on my 26th birthday (Nov 11th, 2004) and fell madly in love!! Came back the next weekend and made a second tandem, followed by my third tandem two weeks later (just to be sure that I wanted to begin AFF) and then started AFF a week after that! Wish I'd found it sooner, but happy to have found it later rather than not @ all!! I hear ya on the cash flow thing!! It was pretty slow going for me until I finally bought my first rig about a yr ago!! AFF2, not understanding basic canopy patterns or wind in general... my radio failed and I flew 3km downwind out of the dropzone. I had a very similar situation on AFF3, although my radio actually fell off. Came out of the plane, did my hotel check and promptly de-arched on exit (OOPS)!! My poor instructor spent most of the jump trying to pull my legs out, as I had then gone fetal and pulled my body into a ball just because I was sooo freaked out!! Ended up relaxing a bit and by 9000ft I was stable and was able to pull for myself @ 5000. Looked down once I was under canopy and realized that my radio was GONE (PANIC!!!!). Sometime during the fight to get my legs out, it'd been knocked out of the holder attached to my cheststrap. I too was very lucky and ended up landing just off the student landing area. On a side note, the radio was found somewhere in the middle of the desert and was still in working order !! Glad that you landed OK as well!! "Sex.... It's just like cuddling - only damper." I met Johnny @ the WFFC in 2006 when was very new to skydiving, and I made my "Muff Bros" initiation jump with him and a couple others on an inflatable shark (so much fun!!). What a guy!! I was on jump #35 or so, and we'd been getting out at 8000ft due to the crappy weather that day. I think it was jump #3 or 4 that day, and without asking I assumed that we were still going to get out @ 8000ft as we had before (stupid!!). I watched the first team go out (which was a CRW team btw). Checked the spot which looked unfamiliar as we were so off jump run, but again instead of asking I just decided it'd be fine and to just go (have I mentioned, stupid?!). I remember hearing someone yell "Wait" or something of that nature as I exited, but by that time I was out already. So....did I pull high and make it back?? Nope (that again would have been the smart thing to do), I pulled @ 3200ft and landed in a dirt field several miles off the dz (luckily there are a ton of outs in Eloy). Got picked up by one of the nice guys from the dz and have not heard the end of it in the three yrs since (rightfully so!!). Lesson learned; if you dont know ask do not assume!!!! "Sex.... I dont drive out here since I am currently living in Australia for eight months, and I think if I tried a right hand drive vehicle, I'd kill someone (not to mention, mess my head up when I come home in the fall!!); however I do have to take a 45 min train to meet up w/one of my skydiving buddies and catch a lift down to the dz. The drive from the station is about and 1 hr or so, so just about 2 hrs one way. I can also take a city train and then switch to a country train out to Campbelltown (closest stop to the dz @ Picton where I jump), which is about an hr or so, and then have someone pick me up and its about another 30 min long drive from there to the dz. I do really appreciate all those who have been willing to pick my ass up and drive me to and from the dz (that would be you Dave, Steve, Cath and Alex!!!
