I hatched out of a military family. Both parents were democrats and did not vote for Eisenhower. Both were from the south but believed in the civil rights movement. As a kid living in Montgomery, Alabama, I remember MLK's bus boycotts and Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat on the bus.
