Actually yes. There is a very strong separation of religion and state in Turkey. So no, I do not think he would be stoned, caned, shot, decapitated or whatever else the Taliban could dream up. It is not often difficult to discern between instructors and what they say. At least I tend to put a lot more weight on a well presented and thoroughly argued position, also when the topic falls on skydiving gear. When I was looking for my first rig, I spent a lot of time interrogating instructors and riggers. Now, I weigh 240 out the door, and one instructor I talked to thought that I should just buy a Sabre 190 and be done with it. I must say I did not put much emphasis on his opinion when I weighed it up against the more convincingly explained alternatives. The instructors and riggers who took the time to sit down with me and point out and explain things, they deserve a lot more credit in this respect. In his defence I should say, though, that we buy our first rig a bit later than in the states, but still...

I take it you haven't actually done any poised exit SL jumps yourself then. It is SOP for any instructor to make sure the rig clears the door, and yes it does look like you're being pushed but you don't notice it as a student. For airtwardo: If you do one pass per student (as done at my home DZ) I have never seen the instructors not "clean up" between jump runs, so they do pull in the SL + D-bag. My problem with his statement is primarily that he says that the caricatures themselves contribute to an image of all muslims as militant islamists. This is blatantly wrong. The people acting all up about this, storming an EU office and threatening with bombs are the ones giving muslims a bad name.
