  1. I used to exit out of our Beech 18 facing towards the wing and then waited a couple of seconds before opening up, but it always very turbulent as I exited and then I seemd to immeidatley go into a fairly hard spiraling turn as I opened my wings. I've changed to getting into the door on my knees with ankles crossed and hands across my chest. I then lean out the door until I began to fall out and then pull my head and shoulders back into an arch. This puts me out the door in a shallow dive, I then give it about a second and a half then open legs and arms. This gives me enough airspeed that I immediately have turn authority and can come on to my 90 turn. Anything wrong with doing it this way? -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  2. What's weird is that this thing has been being test jumped and rumor of it hans't been running rampant. I can understand NDA's, but you'd think other people at the dz would have mentioned it. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  3. Put one in, no. It is, however, possible for one to "time out" by reaching its expiration date while in your rig. Though techincally this isn't illegal because the AAD manuals don't mandate removal of an AAD when it expires, they only disallow you to install or repack a timed out unit. -Blind -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  4. Don't be so sure. Right now, tribal businesses in OK share revenue with the state via negotiated compacts with the various tribes. Having this law in effect would allow them to effectively ignore those compacts if they so chose and attempt to dictate the terms of Tribal enterprises. This is a bigger issue than it seems because the "sovereign" status of federally-recognized tribes is more lip-service than reality, and there is a real queation of how much protection the Tribes could expect from Washington. The bigger problem is that the OK lawmakers that came up with this law aren't from the part's of OK that are real Indian Country. Otherwise, they'd have realized that l~15 years ago, the state came a hair's breadth away from witnessing a large scale "hot" tribal civil war and a great of that anger and restiveness remains. They try something stupid, and it's liable to create a flashpoint at a time when the majority of OK's NG units are deployed overseas. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

  6. Many of the other brands are either entirely or majority-owned by major soft drink companies and thus don't need to spend as much on advertising because they already own so much cooler space to begin with which is it's own form of marketing. -blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  7. Rob and Abedy's advice is based on a very mistaken assumption. The reason other atheletes replace their helmets after a hit is that those are impact protection helmets with sacrifical liners that are good for one impact. Skydiving helmets are not true impact helmets and don't have such systems. So the question becomes can you repair it well enough that freefall won't break the repair? -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

  9. I don't think you could be more wrong. The original seed that started it all was business competition. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  10. This bears repeating. I'm 5'11" (180 cm) amd 350 lbs. exit weight (159 kg) and the difference in slowfall between my Prodigy I and my Supermach is only a couple of mph, but the Supermach has a radically faster forward speed and is far more responsive/unstable. Those latter things can be an asset but they sure were a pain in the ass when I transitioned from the Prodigy to the Supermach at around 25 ws jumps. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

  12. The embarrassing thing is I know what G grunts are and actually used them the other time I was greying out, it just didn't occur to me that I was in that severe of a high G situation this time. I suspected I would need to cutaway from the moment the opening began to twist because if I get more then two linetwists while wingsuiting, it's all but impossible for me to kick out of them because normally my canopy is ridicously docile (straight and level) in twists to the point of resisting kicking out especially with the extra drag of the ws fabric. However, I jump an old style Supermach with the velcro release (instead of a traditional wingcutaway system) that I can not manhandle open so in order to do anything I have to open up the arms at the wrist. I said unzip but in actuality it was more of unsnap the zipper from the thumb loop then peel the velcro from that point up. That takes time, so while I was doing that, I was kicking out to see if I could get lucky with the twists. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  13. After a wingsuit jump today I pitched at 4000 ft and had a hard opening that immediately transitioned into spinning line twists. I found myself spinning under canopy on my back and began to kick out of the line twist while getting my arms unzipped. I have no idea of the number of rotations that occurred while this was taking place but I got my arms free and reached for my risers and noted that my alti was showing 2800 ft. My harddeck is 2500 and I could see that I still had 3 line twists and decided that I couldn't clear then in 300 ft so began my EP's, and then things got weird. I teach all the fjc's at my dz, I am literally teaching EP's multiple times every single week (and have done so for several years now), furthermore not only have I had a number of cutaways in the past but I'm also a rigger, so I have zero gear fear issues when it comes to chopping. Nor do I have any trouble with remaining calm while dealing with a bad situation. Despite all that, as I put my hands on my handles, I realized that I was very confused and literally could not remember which handle to pull first. I also noted that everything felt surreal and got distracted by the feel of the soft reserve ripcord handle under my finger tips. I must have stroked that handle three or four times before /I pulled it first./ The thing was that it was a weak pull and all I did was take the slack out of the system. I had to pull it a second time to actually activate the reserve and even after that first pull it did not occur to me that I had pulled the wrong one. It was only after I stared at the ripcord in my hand for a bit that I realized that I hadn't felt myself separate from my canopy. Still feeling no fear or concern whatsoever, it occurred to me that I should pull the other handle if I wanted the canopy to go away which seemed like a good idea for some reason that I couldn't quite pinpoint. So I did just into time to execute a canopy transfer. Within a couple of seconds of my reserve opening I was feeling normal other than being very deeply disturbed by what had happened and wondering how in the fuck I could forget something as basic as EP's. At first I was willing to believe that I simply had the mother of all fuck ups but then I remembered the euphoria and getting distracted by the texture of the handle. That got me to thinking about the possibility of hypoxia. When I thought about it, I could remember a little bit of grey on the edge of my vision, but I had dismissed it because the only experience I had with greying out was that it was a rapidly moving tunnel that narrowed my visual field during an extremely hard opening. I was wondering if this might have just been a case of the grey out taking long enough that I started to get hypoxic before that point? -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  14. Thanks much Chris. Discovered that my version of Vegas has the "Bypass FX" checked by default on the preview screen. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  15. fun, though color correction would be nice for those late day tandems when the lighting levels in the plane suck. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  16. While the editor is away, the IT guy (me) is gonna play. Well that was the plan, but I'm running into what's probably a very stupid (on my part) problem. In Vegas Pro 10, I inserted the Levels FX into my video and then went to adjust the levels, but watching the preview window, I see no difference at all when I moved the sliders. I've watched tutorial videos and the picture changes as they move the slider so obviously I've missed something very basic (though I did remember to check the "levels" tab at the top of the Video Events FX box). Does anyone have any ideas? -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  17. Another container option is something from Mirage or any other rig that's built under TSO 23B rather than 23C or D. Precision Aero makes the R-Max 288 which is rated to 317 pounds. NZ Aerosports (aka Icarus Canopies) will scale up their design to your request. For the longest time, I flew the largest non-tandem Safire II they'd ever built (269 sf), but Brian Germane tells me that they've built a couple of even bigger ones for some Aussie jumpers now. Keep in mind that at 265, you're going to be right around 300 lbs exit weight because your clothing helmet and alti will add about 10 lbs and even allowing for the lighter weight of a Racer, you're looking at around 25 lbs of rig weight. That will put you right at a 1:1 wingloading ratio on a fully elliptical canopy as a student which will make some instructors cringe. That's the only qualm I have with John and Nancy's recommendation as their gear is rock solid. They do seem a bit agressive on wingloading, when I was looking to demo a slightly smaller canopy their suggestion was that I demo a Firebolt that would have put me under a fully elliptical canopy loaded at 1.6 at 300 jumps. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  18. Not going to be a R-Max 138 then. That packs up comprably to a PD-R 143. I've not worked enough with the Optimum to have the size difference ebtween it and a PD-R memorised. Figure that otu and the rest is fairly easy. Best way to do it though is probably give your rig manufactuer a call. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  19. Nope. The only reg regarding AAD's is that they must be maintained according to the manufactuer's instructions. Those may or may not require that info on the card. However, I agree that it's a very good practice to follow. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  20. Figure it as one size larger than it actually is for pack volume. The way the fourth line in a group is reenforced really adds to the pack volume. It's a shame they got such a bad rap from the older Ravens, I wouldn't trust anything else but my R-Max. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  21. Tried that, but they'll only give that info to a bona fied military buyer. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  22. Thanks Keith -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  23. I'm not talking about percieved value but actual cost to replace the system. A demil'ed harness runs aorund $100 before you start lumping in the cost of repairing the demil damage and replacing handles, risers, bags and pc's plus the canopies usually need a new line set. Six years ag, I spent well over $750 assembling a complete setup, but that's been several years back and I ended up with some extra components. Nowadays the parts are even rarer and I need ala carte pricing since I'm trying to price a single rig without any leftover components. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  24. House got robbed a few days back and I lost a couple of rigs. Fortunately, they weren't ones I was actively using and I do have insurance, but that raised another question. I'm supposed to list the replacement value of items taken and I have no idea of what the value of an MT-1-XX (the complete system not just the MT-1 canopies) is since Para-flite doesn't deal with civilians any more. Does anyone know? -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
  25. Are you seeing a big boost with V11 and that card? Because, a 260's only a half step above NVIDIA's entry level consumer card and our main NLE rig is actually running an even higher tier 460 right now. If there is a speed difference, then I'm salivating at the thought of what can be done with a higher end card like a 580 GTX. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
