  1. Rhonda, you thought my original post was a joke? Now that's funny. Everyone can feel free to post their thoughts, but don't think you're going to say anything I haven't already thought of. So it's not going to make a difference what you say to me. Tom, even if Clair dies BASE jumping and I go to prison, I would still say the venture was worth it. See I've already thought of that scenario too. She could die snowboarding this winter throwing backflips off thirty foot kickers, she could die climbing rocks in S. Lake Tahoe where she lives, she could die driving her car around a winding road. The girl wants to BASE jump, and until her parents tell me they've changed their minds, which is always a possibility, I'll teach her how to do it. What's the big f-ing deal? Not that it will matter to any of you, but she's pretty heads up. On the exit point, with pilot chute in hand, she turned to me and asked, "what do I do if I can't find the yonkels?" I was like, "you will find them, but that's a good question. Hold onto the rear seatbelts, and use them to steer into the wind, then pull them down about six to eight inches just before you land." Within five seconds of her tarp opening, she had found the yonkels, unstowed the breaks, and turned into the wind. She even stood up her landing. If potential for disaster kept people from doing the things we want to do, no one would ever have any fun. And if one you more ethical BASE jumpers calls the police and if I am breaking some sort of endangering a minor law, and I am cited for that, I'll obviously discontinue teaching her. So if it matters that much to any of you go ahead and do that. Tell the police I live at 820 N. Lower Sac Road Apt. # 9 in Lodi California. I'm there most evenings after 7. Or just keep feeding you ego by talking shit and throwing possible "what if" scenarios out into cyberspace.
  2. It's cool to split this from the "My boyfriend won't let me jump" thread, but the reason I first posted about Clair was that it was a topic germain to the issue of not letting someone jump because you care, or love them so much that you don't want to help them participate in an inherintly dangerous activity. I'm always amazed when a boyfriend won't help his girlfriend BASE jump if it's something she wants to do. Far from a proof that you love the person, I see it as a form of control of one person over another. Maybe cleverly disguised as an example of loving care, it's really a control freak problem, one of the major issues I've encountered with relationships. Why people want to control other people, especialy those who they supposedly care about is beyond me. If your boyfriend or girlfriend wants to do something, even if just to try it to see if they like it, and you have the ability or means to help facilitate that, not doing so, no matter what reason you give, is just lame and you're hindering that person's right to explore life. I posted about Clair on that topic to show that BASE jumping can be done successfully by someone without prior skydiving experience, so that's one excuse you gotta cross off the list, and all the little "what ifs" in the world don't amount to shit in the face of the one true "What If?" That we all live by: "What if this chick totally sticks it and has an absolute blast?" To those who believe I do the stuff I do to feed my own ego: HIDGAF. I do the stuff I do just to see if it can be done. And finding that out is worth every risk. All of us know that. About the not letting a loved one BASE jump... Dostoyevsky, a genious beyond compare, "found that love contains among its elements the desire to exercise power over the beloved, and that if this desire is not gratified the the loved one can be hated and loved at the same time" Gotta go, a group of blind people just showed up to do tandems. This is gonna be good. "Has anyone SEEN my rig?" late, jimmy
  3. You should have seen this parapalegic tandem passenger I was making fun of this weekend. I was all like, "hurry up get on the plane!"
  4. Wow, I've waiting for good reason to post about this... Must have been about a week ago that I took this girl, Clair, on her first BASE jump. No tandems, no skydives, only 16 yrs. old. And since jt wouldn't let me take her at his bridge, we had to do it at a freestanding power tower. Should have seen her. She totaly stuck it and even stood up her landing. The best part is, I didn't even have to tell her anything. I just showed her the section in RADIX where Shane is briefing his deathcamp student. BTW Keen 'N Able should be ready to ship late November. Which reminds me also...any crew that wants to enter the "get your crew in a BASE video" contest should start thinking about getting me their footage. Fox 245 with Vtec and multi-bridle up for grabs. (75 jumps on it). late, jimmy edit for thread title ~TA
  5. Hey ya'll, I usually post on the base jumping section, but I thought some of you might like to check out a couple of the shots i just threw up on the videos page of my website: www.jimmyhalliday.com One of the shots is of tj doing a switchblade footgrabber at our pond in lodi. It's not that great of a shot, but it's a sick swoop. the other shot is of Tj, Rian Brownlow, and Dingo groundlaunching out near San Francisco. These shots are gonna be in my next video "Keen 'N Able" which will be out this winter. TJ is gonna have a super sick section in it. later, jimmy
  6. Yup, another video on my website: www.jimmyhalliday.com It's the box on the right and as usual it'll take a little while to load, but wow...this chick rocks! late, jimmy
  7. Zennie, I don't know what the term "Civil Disobedience" has evolved into. What I'm talking about is the actual spirit that it was written in. I know we have something called civil disobedience now but when Thoreau wrote it he didn't care about numbers or outside sympathetic support. In the second paragraph and talking about the American Government he writes, "It has not the vitality and force of a single living man; for a single man can bend it to his will."
  8. Remember everybody, this is not a discussion about whether or not we should do this, but just a simple who's in and who isn't. The ramifications will not ruin anyone's lives permanently. Let's just get back to who's willing and really that's it...Who's willing. The next step is even easier...set a date., we go, we jump, we get busted, or maybe not. Whatever. Those who know why this is a good idea don't need to explain themselves, and if anyone wants an explanation, i suggest they pick up a copy of thoreau's "Civil Disobedience." It's a little wordy, but good. Oh and all the speculation about what will happen to those get busted is pointless at this point because those questions will get answered after the jump. This sounds fun, and very American. late, jimmy
  9. I have multiple photos of jumps within the NPS on my website...www.jimmyhalliday.com Not only am I fully in on any type of thing that may or may not happen there, but I have the resources to make sure the entire world sees the footage, so I'll even risk the "no filming withing the NPS without a permit" bust. Since I got this HD camera, I could care less about my 3chip DVcam camera. The NPS rules are so rediculous and so arbitrary that I'm ready to sue the NPS based on the fact that they are hindering my constitutionary right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." As an aspiring photographer and filmaker, why should I have to spend American money that I make legally in America, and pay taxes on, to travel to a foreign country to get shots that I could get two hours from where I live and work? Last year's trip to Norway was probably $3500 USD total. Shouldn't that money stay in the states? I will always jump on NPS soil, and that does not make me a criminal. In other words, I'm in. Oh, by the way. Both myself and my father have made jumps off a cliff that is very famous to rock climbers and base jumpers alike. My dad's number is 77. I don't know what mine would be. Has anyone ever heard of a father and son both jumping that rock? -jimmy halliday
  10. There's way too much writing on this thread,so i have no idea what you're talking about. But whatever it is, my only advice is to take a camera and jump just before the sun goes down or just before it comes up. Then show the video so everybody knows what you did. Like you said, if it's not on video...

    Cameras...

As I shoot more with this camera, I'll be able to answer more of these questions, but my first impression is...HOLY SHIT! About the 1080i vs. 1080P question? I think the answer will come when the networks decide whether or not to broadcast footage shot with this camera or stick with footage primarily shot with the pricier HD cameras; over 50 grand. It does shoot in the 24p mode which looks more like film and was Panasonic's brainchild with the AG (DVX?) 100 series cameras. All the product reports I read before deciding to buy the camera called it a slam dunk by Sony. And as for the colors shot with this camera compared to my 3 chip DVCAM PDX-10. No comparison. When I watch it on my buddy's HD monitor, it almost brings tears to my eyes. Now I have to reshoot every jump I've ever made. However, I've been having trouble capturing the footage into Final Cut Pro HD. So far I've had to downgrade it to DVCAM in order to get it into the program. Since that just won't do, if anyone has some advice I'm all ears. Obviously I've already tried everything with the capture settings. Now if I were Jaap, I'd go on ebay and bid on a sony PC-9. It uses the good batteries which was the main problem with the PC-5, and it doesn't have the spendy features that the new PC's have. you don't need 'em.

    Cameras...

I just got my new camera and I highly recommend it...Sony HVR-Z1U. Once you see yourself in 1080 lines of resolution you'll never want to look at yourself in the mirror ever again. I'd say it's worth $5,000 price tag and at only 4.5 pounds it's easily helmet mountable. It's a little bulky, but oh well. I'll post a picture soon so you can see the setup. I'd recommend a pretty bomber full face helmet. Rear entry, you know the type. late, jimmy

    Pics

You can rip them off of my website: jimmyhalliday.com I would especially recommend the shot of two guys at a big, well lit wall, the three stack from Norway is nice, a shillouette of a jumper reaching for his pilote chute, jt & Karina's linked gainer at Norway is clean, three guys doing flips from a big A, and maybe some others. late, jimmy
  14. I missed getting the cypress fire on video. That's why I was so stoked to get the powerline shot. Really the guy's o.k. That's why we can laugh. You know when something really cool happens and you're like, "why didn't I have my camera on?" Well this one makes up for all those missed shots. Out Rage!!!! It's done. Everyone needs to pm Avery for details on how to pick up Ill Vision's latest contribution to the world of BASE vids. Especially if you've ever thought that you good at pulling low. late

    Madrid ...

Did you get those videos yet? Take some with you. Haven't sent any to Madrid yet.
  16. "hard work + motivation + passion = blissful success" I notice that "marital bliss" isn't on that list. Hhhmmm.
  17. They just pulled the Krazy Kam segment off RADIX, so it's the same exact thing you already have. To play videos on that site, you'd need to go DivX.com and download their software. It's like $20. Something about super high compression or some such. Anyway, holy cow we're getting some nice shots already this year. I have way more footage already than I did last year at this time. For instance, this guy just landed in the powerlines at the dropzone today, and I was in exactly the right place at the right time to totaly stick the shot. He's o.k. The powerlines actualy saved him. It's priceless, I swear.
  18. The guys at DivX put up a section of RADIX on their video torrent sight at www.expandinglimits.com There's a link to my website where people can buy the video. It'll be a good experiment to see if people outside the world of BASE will be interested in BASE/Skydiving videos. Don'cha think? -jimmy

    Base Polo Shirts

I'll trade you a shirt for one of my next videos. It's gonna be called "Keen & A+ble" with an emphasis on the A+. I just got an HD camera so the quality should be alright. It's gonna be about 45 minutes long, and it won't suck. It should be done by Bridge Day, but just like your shirts it probably won't be ready till the day after. After you see it, you should be able to guess why I BASE jump. Send the shirt to: jimmy halliday P.O. Box 424 Acampo, CA 95220 I'll get it in the vid as long as you don't ask me to sign a liscence agreement.
  20. I agree Tom, this is an awesome subject, one very dear to me, and that's why I'm into it. You're right the Hobbiest/Professional line was divisional, but not in the Real jumper vs. some other kind of jumper way. Just in the sense that I have a vested interest in the potential of BASE especially in the advertising market. Can you imagine a better job than that? I can't. In a nut shell that's why I want BASE jumping to become a well known and respected sport. With my college education, I'm not qualified to do much else than try to squeeze a living out of what I love. But just let it be known that I will never accuse anyone of not being a real jumper or some such cuz that doesn't make sense. I don't think this is a confrontational thread, it's positive. Tree, remember, I'm in Nor Cal. One of the BASE meccas of the world and yes 10 people a day on a Saturday here ask me about BASE jumping. But that might be because I have a huge poster of a BASE jump above the couches where tandem passengers fill out the waivers. They stare at it and go "wow." I see the reaction the shot gets and I know the feeling it invokes. It's that reaction, from non-jumpers, that makes me believe in the future of BASE. How people get into the sport... that's a discussion for people who want to teach like Tom or Miles. I will never have an opinion on what's the "right" or "wrong" way to learn. Not my business.
  21. Tree, you didn't change the subject, but you didn't answer my question either. Tom, I've never said anything about a separation between real, or spiritual BASE jumpers or anything like that. We're all real people and we're all real BASE jumpers. In my opinion, you guys are the ones splitting us up into groups: Those who are "doing something good" for BASE and those who are trying to defile your virgin duaghter. Here's the split as I see it. People who know what BASE jumping is and those who don't. Five years ago, I never heard a word about BASE jumping from non-jumper customers coming to the DZ, now at least ten times a day on a Saturday while doing tandems, I hear, "have you ever done a BASE jump?" How is it that the general public is becoming increasingly aware that there is such a sport as BASE jumping? Because they are seeing it through the media. The other day, I was at Fry's checking out HD tv's. All the tv sets in the store were playing a constant loop of all kinds of "extreme sports" footage. Every tenth shot or so was a BASE jumper filmed in HD by a professional camera crew. Who would have thought anyone would ever pay a crew with $90,000 cameras to shoot BASE jumping in order to sell television sets? And when it comes to Lodi, there's those of us who spend large amounts of time in dumpsters and those who don't. Those who don't are hobbyists. Tree, when I sent you free copies of RADIX and Standard Issue, I was hoping to begin to build a relationship based on mutual respect if not identical ideas on the future of the sport or philosophies on how to pursue it. Silly me.
  22. As with every sport there have always been those who participate in the capacity as hobbyists and those who manage to support themselves. My lifestyle doesn't require much, but if I can get what I need to survive through participation in the sports that I love: skydiving and BASE jumping, then I'm gonna go for it. If Visa wants a shot of BASE jumping bewcause it'll look great in an outdoor magazine and will generate cash flow, then absolutely they can liscence a picture from me. I personally don't sell any products other than $20 videos, but shot of BASE jumping, I believe, have huge potential in the advertising world. Without changing the subject tree, tell me what's wrong with that?
  23. Hey Guys, Getty, the worlds largest stock photo agency just picked up three of my BASE jumping images for potential advertising shots. I get 50% of whatever they sell them for. They have access to a huge market of potential advertisers. One of the images is a beautiful shot of JT and Karina Hollekim holding hands while doing a gainer in Norway. I doubt they would have gone to the trouble to find me and ask for model releases if they didn't think the shot has potential as an advertising image. Like it says on my website...For those who don't already know, BASE jumping is the next "big Thing." I just didn't know that it was other BASE jumpers who didn't know that. What's the harm in thinking big? -jimmy
