  2. Eagles may soar but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines--Steven Wright Not everyone is meant to make a difference but for me the chance to live an ordinary life is not an option Who poked my smot? Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "f*#k, what a ride The six P's: Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance Things which do you no good in aviation (or skydiving for that matter): Altitude above you. Runway behind you. Fuel in the truck. A navigator. Half a second ago. Approach plates in the car. The airspeed you don't have. Being deep in the beeps is not the place to learn EPs. 3. Don't know if it matters to you, but last time I was in Vegas they were handing out brochures for Skydive Las Vegas that looked very similar. But not bad looking by any means, just strap a hot half naked blonde on the front of the tandem in the next one. 4. So do you call it a pilot parachute or pilot canopy? = = -some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain, that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain
  5. So is there a way to get around these rules, i.e. a canopy control class? I am now jumping a 190 that I have purchased, am I going to have to upsize? Here's my problem with the list, you can't skip sizes. That would make it very difficult and expensive to downsize. I started on a 290, then went to a 220 and now a 190 all of which I have stood up every time except twice (once on 290 and one on 220-crosswind on purpose) and could perform all of BillVons checklist except the uphill/downhill only because I live in West Texas. I have no intention of downsizing further (ever, I can make my canopy perform as aggresively as I would ever want to) but coming from a small DZ there just wasn't every size available between these. 6. Kimmy, I think you need to look at it from the other side. I seriously doubt you know the whole story. Work in the ER/Trauma ICUs for a while and then judge. In regard to the broken back incident, if that is the whole story then that nurse should immediately be terminated and reported to the Board of Nursing for unsafe practice. As part of a Health care professionals training we are taught to alleviate the cause of a person's medical issue. We teach the elderly how to avoid falling at home to avoid broken hips, we teach parents to not leave their children unattended in the tub, and we teach people that hucking themselves out of an airplane two miles above the ground involves a higher than average risk. If you can't see that this is hazardous then you need a shot of objectivity. I see you are a diver. What happens when you do a deep dive and get the bends even though you followed the rules. Someone is going to say "why didn't you mix yours gases properly or do your decompression stops appropriately?" It's part of the game. If the hospital is doing anything below the standard of care the by all means report them to their administration and JCAHO www.jcaho.org As far as the transport team, if you have a question then ask. Very rarely is getting in a hurry and acting rash going to improve a situation. Picture this, your friend pounds in and is having trouble breathing but is alert and maintaining his vitals. Things go south. Do you want the guy who has been running all over the place, heart pounding, out of breath, not thinking 100% clearly intubating, starting a line, etc.. on your friend? Or the one who is cool, calm, and in control and likely to do everything right the first time? You never know, maybe that helicopter wasn't equipped to handle that given situation. It would suck to be 5000ft above the ground and miles from the equipment you need. Just get some perspective and ask questions before you go blaming people who work their ass off to save your life. 7. How does IAD make the opening more pleasant? I learned via static line at a 182 DZ and the openings were never uncomfortable. Seems like it would be more natural (normal freefall opening sensation) by static line. The way ours was set up was with a spring loaded pilot chute and the static line was for all purposes just a self removing closing pin. I don't see how someone chucking your pilot chute would be more comfortable. 9. I remember some of the Piper Tomahawks had problems with the t-tail design. If memory serves, stalls got very exciting and spins required a skilled hand to recover from, most of which was attributed to the tail design. Don't know if it's the same on the big boys or not. = = -some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain, that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

  13. My thought process is that when I see a reserve over my head the shit has hit the fan. And in that situation I would want all the nylon the manufacturer could give me. I know that it rarely happens, but what if you were unconscious and a cypres saved your rear? Would you want to come burining in under a 100 sq ft hankie or something that provides a pretty survivable landing without diver input. Maybe my thoughts are wrong, but I don't mind having a bulkier container if it keeps me out of the ambulance.
