it reinforces the fact that spelling is important in all situations, not just english class. once again, i completely disagree. the purpose of education is to teach and learn on a permanent basis, not a temporary one. i realise that we all do not use everything we were taught on a daily basis and that some things never get used at all by most people but, implying to students that poor spelling is only a hindrance in english class would be folly. i see the situation as akin to marking off for poor algebra in calculus class. just like algebra, english is used everywhere and it needs to be used correctly. i couldn't disagree more. poor spelling will get you passed over for any job that requires you to communicate with others in writing. spelling requires memorization and memorization is achieved through repetition. the way to get people to repeat correct spelling is to have consequences for incorrect spelling. bottom line: spelling and grammar are a prerequisite for almost any kind of professional job. those who suck at it look unprofessional and, dare i say, incompetent. i've always thought that standards should be created based upon the requirements of the task. this means that if a person cannot perform up to standard, regardless of the cause, that person should not be allowed to continue. i first ran into this problem while i was wondering why there are different physical standards for men and women in the army. if you can't meet the standard to perform the job, then you don't get to do it. i don't care if one person has to work 100 times harder to achieve a standard than another person due to gender, learning disablility, allergies, height, weight, full moon, whatever. life is not fair and there will always be someone who can do it better and faster and that person might not have to work as hard as you to do it. get over it. the only re-using i've ever done is to back the tape up if the previous jump didn't yield anything worth saving. i've never used a tape again once i got to the end of it. anyway, i've never noticed any quality degradation by doing what i mentioned above. maybe someone that has tried can add to the discussion.
