  1. Tough to drop a toggle on a speedwing, your hand goes all the way through it, different type of toggle. A speedwing is more forgiving to mistakes, wider range of flight, faster stall recovery, better in turbulence. I told Dave what I thought about speedflying on skydiving wings but he didn't take my advice, didn't get training, no longer with us. He was a good guy and is missed by many. 2. So having admitted you've never even flown one how would you know? Like I said I get 5x on my Bobcat 16.5 and it is clearly a speed wing. http://www.gingliders.com/speedflying/speedflying-gliders/bobcat/ Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  3. Please establish your credentials by telling us how many speedfly specific wings you have flown/own and how many hours of airtime you actually have. Your post is full of inaccuracies: The major advantage of a speedfly wing has little to do with the ribs. The ribs do not create 3x the glide of a skydiving wing, that is a combination of the planform and line length. The ribs keep the nose open in event of a turbulence induced collapse which means a faster recovery. This is a big deal in speedfly but not so much in skydiving. Still incorrect, a speedfly wing at 5:1 allows for a longer zigzagging flight, so you get more airtime for the hike, not to mention the speedfly wing carves infinitely better without losing as much height. It is true that many have died on speedwings, but there would be many more incidents if the active speedflying community actually took your advice and used inappropriate gear. 4. No they should go to a training center and get training just like skydiving, base or paragliding. Then they should spend a few grand on the right gear. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  5. Not really, the GLX is flown only by a handful of active speedfliers and almost all of them from a skydiving/swooping background, sales are miniscule compared to real speedfly canopies from Ozone, Gin etc. GLX is a highly specialized tool for steep downhill only, doesn't even compare to a Fluid, Fazer etc. I would be surprised if more than 100 GLX were ever sold. Anyone who flies one likely has a number of other speedfly canopies too. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  6. I disagree, this takes minimal flying skill and a large dose of stupid. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  7. Great advice, once you have flown a real speedwing you'll never go back. A close friend of mine died as a result of speedflying a skydiving canopy. You may get 2:1 glide on your Stiletto but I get 5:1 on my Bobcat. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  8. I'm also a believer in keeping it simple for FJC, but at some point I think the variations need to be introduced so that people can make an informed decision. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  9. @Squeak - Do you retrain this at some later point, ie A license EP review? Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  10. Did anyone else think it a bit strange that AFP isn't recommending you throw or otherwise attempt to clear the PC in a horseshoe? Would be interested in hearing from AFP - AFF guys on this. Is the idea that you don't want to teach any variation in the EPs in the FJC? Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  11. Tell that to Dave Ogison (who died in San Diego doing exactly this). You don't know shit about ground launching bud, it's more dangerous than skydiving by far. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  12. In this video the guy is in deep brakes, increasing the angle of attack, the turbulence seems to contribute at that point and the canopy stalls/collapses. That's my take on the video. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  13. Collapse is result of a stall, which MAY be a result of flying in brakes. My personal policy is to avoid braked flight in conditions where turbulence is likely. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  14. +1 I really don't want student knowing any more than they NEED to know for a normal jump. Most students have no idea what's going on and are not equipped to act rationally in the moment or to recall their training. Think about how many AFF students do the opposite of what you tell them even after a long class. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  15. Personally I tell them never touch anything except their harness at chest level... do you really want to introduce the idea that they should grab onto stuff they don't really understand in preparation for such an unlikely scenario? 16. I agree, to me it is optimal if the student has a seatbelt but it not hooked up for takeoff. It is very difficult to detach lowers when the student is pulling away from you in an emergency situation. This might not even be a crash, for me it was an engine fire on the ground. That being said, if you are unlucky enough to have to jump a narrow 182 hooking up the lowers when boarding is pretty much unavoidable. 18. Passengers on airline flights seem to often be involved in restraining unruly passengers and I've never heard of charges being filed. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  19. My speedriding canopy, Gin Bobcat, has rear riser trim tabs. You don't actually manipulate the risers on most speedfly canopies other than the trim tabs. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

  21. I've bailed out three times I can remember. Most recently was at about 8k, skyvan lost hydraulic pump and pilot invited us to leave early, basically a normal jump run and orderly exit. Another one was when the pilot forgot to put the fuel cap on the 206 and we noticed fuel streaming from the wing, again communicated with the pilot and then jumped near the dz. Once on the ground the 185's engine caught fire on start-up, pilot wasn't saying anything, I told my tandem passenger we should leave, he kind of freaked out and was attached to me by the lower connectors which wasn't the best situation. That turned out not to be a bad engine fire, just excess fuel hitting the hot cowling. Communicating with the pilot is definitely a good idea. 22. Paraglider pilots do a better job of teaching and practcicing stall recovery than we do in the skydiving world. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
