  1. I always jump an open face helmet, thin baseball gloves, and most of the times have just a t-shirt under my jumpsuit. I don't feel cold in freefall, unless it's really cold by my standards (like -20 Celsius or below). However, I can definitely feel my hands freezing under canopy when it's cold, probably because of limited circulation when you have your arms raised for toggles... -------------- We were not born to fly. Compass Help

Yeah, I agree with SWATcop that cheapo compasses are crap... Not sure which one you've got, but $10 price doesn't give a lot of confidence... Long time ago (like in early 80's) I used to have a Swedish-made compass -- it really was a piece of art, and the best thing I've ever had! However, depending on where exactly you are practicing, it may well be an environment. Look for some electric machinery, powerlines, large masses of metal, etc. If you are in an open field, it should be pretty consistent, though... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  3. Hmm... How about "çà÷åêîâêà ñòðîï"? And, grommets in Russian are "ëþâåðñû"... It's freaking funny posting in two languages mixed up in the same msg... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  4. I fall under a very broad term of "IT Professional"... To be more specific, I install (as well as configure, upgrade, troubleshoot, etc.) medical imaging systems in diagnostic radiology, to make those old-fashioned films things of the past. So, the next time someone is visiting a hospital after a not-so-perfect landing (ouch!), or getting an OB ultrasound (much better!), chances are very good that a Dr. is looking at your bones, or your soon to be born baby, on our system... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  5. Well... It all depends where you have a chance to jump -- the world is larger than North America with it's regulations... Oh, did anyone go through the hail cloud without a full-face on? OUCH! -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  6. Never understood how it would have anything to do with AFF... I'd do hop'n'pops from 3,000 with no problem. I wouldn't go any lower, but it's simply because I understand my own (in)experience and limitations of my gear (bungee PC and Triathlon main, which has a fairly long snivel)... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  7. These are cool! The first one and the last two are my favs... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...

    S.O.S.?

Ahhh... My bad -- I didn't read the original post correctly... I was thinking about the standard dual-action system with an RSL, and didn't realize in the second paragraph BrianM also meant the SOS system and an RSL. OK, I get it now... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...

    S.O.S.?

Emphasis is mine Uhh... Unless I'm grossly confused about the subject, I don't see how that works... Can you tell me just how pulling silver will cut away your main on an RSL-equipped rig?!? The other way around is perfectly clear, of course. -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  10. Sorry, but that's a total made-up BS... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  11. Doesn't the last paragraph actually answer the question?
  12. Something like these (see attachments)? We use those on another skydiving forum... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  13. I have a Pro and Adobe Designer for forms development. I can try to do it, if you send me a PDF file ([email protected]), or give a link to it if it's on the 'Net. Can't guarantee the result, since I haven't done it before, but I'll try my best.
  14. (emphasis is mine) Here is your answer. It looks like you keep arguing just for the sake of argument... BTW -- two days ago I went with my rig in a carry-on suitcase through a checkpoint at YVR (Vancouver Intl) with not a single question asked, as usual... Next week I am flying back from LEX (Lexington) -- we'll see how it goes. -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  15. You are kidding, right? No, really, you can't be seriously thinking that traveling skydiving community would make more or less significant impact on airlines' well-being. It's all about business travelers -- has been, is, and will be at least in foreseeable future... In case you haven't noticed, it's already pretty close to that at checkpoints. Do you have any ideas to improve the situation, or at least stop it from getting any worse? -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  16. At home --- a radio alarm set to a local FM station. At a hotel (and I spend a LOT of time on the road) I always use a PDA and/or a cellphone -- power fluctuations happen way too often to trust an alarm clock in a room, and I HATE wake-up calls with passion... The biggest trouble is when I forget to change a time zone on my Palm... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  17. First of all -- did you review this video with your instructor, and did you ask him the same question? If yes, what was the response? If no, WHY? You should definitely talk to the instructor who was there with you! I am sure people with more experience will give you more details and tips to fix it, but one thing that is very apparent is that your legs are out of control, and this is what's causing the spin, IMHO. It was the same thing (but much more violent) with me on my very first solo exit... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  18. OK, let's try that again... TSA did nothing wrong, since they can request your reserve to be opened for inspection. Now, the reason WHY they did it is a different matter, and while I certainly understand your frustration (I would be pissed, too!), I believe it's rather pointless to complain about it, because, whatever the reason was, they were within their right. I agree with bigway's opinion that creating a noise around this isolated incident can do more harm than good... And, BTW, I fly a lot myself, spending more than 50% of my working time on the road. Believe me, I've seen a lot of stupid things at checkpoints (like one guy who had to loose his Dr. Scholl's pain-relieving gel insoles ), but that doesn't change my opinion on the subject... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  19. I was just not extending my legs soon enough for recovery -- once you gain the momentum, you will easily flip more than once. I was surprised I was douing that while being stable on other axis, though... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  20. Well... To be honest, I don't think anything I posted would be worth a mag publication. Plus, I am not a subscriber to "Skydiving" and I don't know Mike... Besides that warning page that I attached, I didn't say anything that haven't been said before. I am sure that people who travel all over places with their gear have many more stories to tell, and more valuable tips to offer. And that warning was just something I came up with to let security people know what exactly they are dealing with, if I am not around for any reason (just how many non-skydivers would identify this funny-looking backpack with buckles and handles as a parachute?) Granted, someone can do a better job with wording and presentation (especially considering English is my second language ) If you or someone else feels it'd be worth publishing this thing somewhere, by all means please feel free to do it -- I don't hold a copyright on it. bigway That's what I am thinking as well. Especially since TSA, strictly speaking, did absolutely nothing wrong... -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  21. That's freaking hilarious! -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  22. When I was doing backflips for the first time (don't remember which AFF level that was), I had a hard time recovering from them to a belly-to-earth position, and went through 3 or 4 of them, one after another. I remember my instructor's comments after the jump: "Hmm, looked like you were having fun -- I was wondering if you were ever gonna stop..." -------------- We were not born to fly. And all we can do is to try not to fall...
  23. That's exactly the reason I have mine!
