  1. The issue we were discussing is whether "morality" is the exclusive provision of people who don't question belief. There may be a general agreement between people that forms the basic tenets and language of morality. However, it is up to the individual alone to make the ultimate choice in a given situation. And the ability to choose in this way certainly does not require uncritical belief. Wayne
  2. Being morally good means you will conform without question to the beliefs of others. Being a good scientist means you will question the beliefs of others. Your statement indicates you are willing to cede the term "morality" to the religious right, Islamic fundamentalists, and other purveyers of doctrinaire adherence to belief. Are you sure you want to do that? In its pure form, morality has to do with an individual's struggle to distinguish right from wrong. As such, questioning other's beliefs in this pursuit is totally appropriate. Wayne
  3. Just out curiosity, what kind of reserve handle did he have? Wayne
  4. Interesting argument, and one of the key arguments against starting the Iraq war in the first place. The terrorists don't like a lot of things about us. They don't like our support for Israel, they don't like our support for democracies in the Middle East, they just don't like our own internal freedoms as the President rightly says. To waver in any of these things, just because it would avoid "giving them what they want" would be to allow them to control or at least influence our actions. Disclaimer: I have not yet seen this film (have you?). Wayne
  5. Perhaps, it would. But then the next question is: How would you feel as an American if the terrorists could control what you do or say? Wayne
  6. Sean MacCormack, Max Cohn, John Skinner, TJ Landgren There's a lot of great talent out there. Wayne
  7. Hey, don't feel so bad. Wait till you cut away and can't find your main. Wayne
  8. That wasn't his first. But wasn't it his first tandem? Wayne
  9. This is, in my opinion, a fallacy perpetuated only by skydivers. That would be great, if it were true. Unfortunately, what happened after the Hilder death last July 4 suggests otherwise. For months we read about a cut-and-dried murder. A skydiver's rig was sabotaged, surgically and methodically by someone who obviously understood a whole lot about what they were doing. To many of us, this was an unheard of, cold-blooded thing for any human being to perpetrate, Then all of a sudden comes the report that evidence points to suicide. But besides the fact that that evidence is far from convincing, there is one small problem. Nobody who knew the victim saw any of the telltale signs of a suicidal personality. No depressions, no painful admissions to friends, no indirect signs whatsoever. Instead, he appeared to all who knew him to be an exceptionally happy guy with everything to look forward to. But then of course, he was a skydiver, wasn't he? Everyone knows what a crazy, suicidal sport skydiving is. And that was enough to give the cops the cover they needed to get away with a finding of suicide. I doubt they would have had the balls to try the same move if he had been murdered while on a fishing boat. Wayne
  10. Well maybe it works okay with a bracket, but it doesn't lie flat enough within the Rawa D-box to not interfere with the shot. A sizeable chunk of the box's front opening was in frame. I decided to use the Aggie Dave method and now everything works fine. Wayne
  11. Absolutely right. And that fact only further emphasizes how irresponsible the police were in the original incident by declaring it a suicide. It's bad enough to worry about actual suicides. We don't need manufactured ones. Wayne
  12. I got mine from Fry's for $699 with free shipping. Here's the direct link. Wayne
  13. Sometimes the brute force method is the best. But would that void the warranty? Wayne
  14. Man, those are some pretty small screws, not to mention hard to get to with a screwdriver. Thanks, but I think I'll pass on that one. Wayne
  15. I don't know, it's a little snug inside my D box. What did you do with the plastic lens cap? Wayne
  16. Just got my PC 105 in the mail and am very psyched to start flying with it. One question though: what do I do about the hand-hold, grip belt? It's pretty easy to take it apart, take off the pad and unthread it from one of the camera's attach points. I can't figure out how to get it off the other attach point though. Is some way to totally take it off so it can be re-attached without too much trouble? Wayne
  17. Machiavelli's The Prince?
  18. No. Prisoners do not have the same rights. My question was not whether you believed that his proposal was a good one. It was specifically about how that proposal jived with Libertarianism. Of course prisoners have the different rights than non-prisoners. That's the point of their being prisoners. However, I tend to think that having the government require that they stay in bed for a solid month might be something that other Libertarians would have objections about. Personally, I'm not a Libertarian myself, but it does seem to be a pretty dramatic example of the government intruding on and controlling intimate details of an individual's life. Wayne
  19. Does anyone else notice that there seems to be a bit of a contradiction here? Wayne

  21. This charge is completely irresponsible. There have been no reasonable news accounts that even remotely support any of this. Everything points to the fact that Berg was just some idealistic guy who supported the war and wanted to use his technical abilities to help with the reconstruction. The one thing he was guilty of was to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Wayne
  22. Was it a DZ who denied them or was it the Army? Wayne
