  1. I just bought a new Brother single needle automatic machine. I got to sew on it a bit today and it gets to my house tomorrow afternoon. Really excited, I love the features and really had no idea they had machines that do all this cool stuff. Auto back tacking (with selection of how many stitches), total speed control, soft start, automatically set number of stitches, thread cutter, and auto foot lift... love it. Just wanted to share my enthusiasm for my new sewing machine... not many other non skydiver or rigger friends quite understand...
  2. What happened when you tried to repair a paraglider?
  3. The big downside to all the BM cameras is no high speed. Im sure that will change soon though, just a matter of time. I like being able to go at least 60 fps personally.
  4. Lightfield cameras are available, but not in the kind of quality needed. I'm thinking more like 4k effective resolution at infinite focus or stereo positions.. at high frame rates :) I saw the 8k thing in Japan at Interbee in Epson's booth. It's sad they killed their 8k laser projector. It was unlike anything I've seen since then.
  5. Seeing 4k come into the consumer arena is amazing. I've been involved in 3D for several years in the feature and TV sports market and it never really took the hold that a lot of people were hoping it would, including myself. But, two years ago in Japan I saw a demonstration of an experimental Epson 8k laser projector, projecting content shot on the NHK 8k research camera. And my jaw absolutely dropped. At that resolution, it gets close to being able to trick human vision into believing what's on the screen is real. So much detail its insane... Although 3d is a great thing, I really think ultra ultra high resolution is the future of entertainment. Although infinite resolution lightfield cameras should be a hell of a thing to see, and probably are only 1-2 years away :)
  6. Also look at the new prices at www.red.com Epic - 120fps 5k - 19k Scarlet 4k - 8k And the Red One 4k for $4k pretty unreal
  7. Seems like a lot of back and neck injuries in skydiving... I ruptured a disc at c5-6 and have a bulging disc as well from an unholy opening wearing a heavy camera helmet. As is the story most of the time, a good surgeon won't operate unless you have numbness and weakness in limbs and/or pain so severe you can't function. I saw a couple different surgeons and physical therapists and I can echo what Rob and others have said. Exercise and stretching has to become as much a part of your day as brushing your teeth. Things like Yoga and swimming are very beneficial and also anything that strengthens your core to protect your spine.
  8. I have an older S Fly Expert that has the single zipper that goes down to the crotch. To make it easier to slip into, I thought about modifying it and putting in two zippers that go down to the knees on either side like their new suits and all the other suits out there. Anyone done this to an SFly? Or anyone think of a reason not to do it?
  9. If anyone knows Rob Traynham from Bozeman, MT, please get in touch with me. I bought a canopy from him, but I haven't been able to get in touch with him for a week. Username KidIcarus. Hoping nothing happened to him... Thanks.
  10. Anyone know a good place to jump in Moscow? I'm here for two months and I wanted to find a place to make a few jumps before it got too cold.
  11. Does anyone know what type of fabric the S Fly wingsuits are made out of?
  12. Does anyone know what type of fabric SFly wingsuits are made from?
  13. The Bernina 217 is a great zig zag. I have one, which I just had tuned up. It was out of time but now runs great. I've sewn on things 8 layers thick including two layers of cordura with no problem. I've also sewn on ZP with it. They cost a bit more than a straight stitch though. Got mine for 850 with new table and motor. If you want a good straight stitch, I can point you to a dealer in LA that has refurbished Singer 591's for $350 including table/motor.
  14. Hm. Well your the first person that I've heard from that owns one. When I asked all the industrial dealersr in the area, they all said to stay away from Yamata as they were mass produced from China and trying to capitalize on the success of Yamato from Japan. Most techs said their machines worked, but they would often require more service, break more often, and timing would be an issue. Most suggested to buy a used Singer, Juki, Brother or Consew. Although I'm more interested now since you've had a good experience. Maybe the other dealers just make more $$ on the other machines. What other machines are you going to get?
  15. I had this EXACT problem with my Javelin. It worked fine for a year or two. Then one day at Skydive AZ I put it on and when I stood up the leg straps just pulled out about an inch.... hmmm... I grounded my rig and called sunpath. They were very accomodating. They said that they made quite a few rigs where this leg hardware was freefloating inside the loop of webbing. They said most had no problems but a few encountered this issue. I didn't believe it was a serious safety issue. I believe they would have held fine in an opening shock but I wanted to fix them anyway. They now put a piece of webbing between the pieces of hardware. They repaired mine for free and sent it right back. When I got it back it actually took a lot of strength to tighten and loosen the leg straps. After a while this got much easier. Call Sunpath and they should take care of you. Just talked to Dave the other day. Great guy.
  16. Swimming Pools gotta have more chlorine than that. Drinking water/bath water doesn't burn the hell out of your eyes when you open them under it.
  17. Another option for fabric would be to get some ripstop nylon from a fabric store. It's not really parachute fabric but it looks like it. And I think all manufacturers sell their fabric if you have one near you.
  18. You can also look at a Wings container. They are great containers for a good price as well.
  19. How big do you need it to be? Instead of cutting up a canopy, you could just order some ZP from PD for $10/yard.
  20. If anyone is interested in a great industrial straight stitch, I know of 5 singer 591's in good shape that are being sold for $350/each including table, motor etc... From a great re-seller too. PM me if interested. Machines are located in LA
  21. The needles I get are made by Groz-Beckert. I have size 14, 16, and 18. I don't know what the specs are on the throat size, but here's what the package says. 10 nm 110/18 - (for 18 size) DBx1 1738 16x257 71x1 16x231 287 WH DBx257 339.162AC02FFG 075921180G (don't know what all that gibrish means but its on the package) I have the instruction manual and service manual if you need them but it sounds like you already have them.
  22. Have you heard anything about the brand new ones? I have had various industrial dealers tell me they aren't great machines, but not bad either. But there's a huge difference between a brand new Juki double needle ($2,200) and the new Yamata ($250) as far as price. I know they are made in China, probably in mass quantities.... making them cheaper. Anyone own one?
  23. Has anyone heard of Yamata brand industrial sewing machines. They are made in China and seem to be sold for much less than Juki, Brother, etc... Anyone have any experience with them?
  24. In answer to your original question, it is the same thing as a Bernina 217, but as someone mentioned it is missing the parts necessary for cams. I don't have the cams for mine, but it still does a great zig zag and a decent straight stitch. Unless you got it from a good industrial dealer, it may need work, tuning up or new parts. But for the price you got it for, its an amazing deal, even if it was for parts its a good deal.
  25. I just got a Bernina 217N with new table, motor, extra foot and needles for $850.00 I absolutely love the machine. I haven't heard of the chandler, but if its anything like the Bernina, you'll like it. Do you have any pictures of it? I could tell you if it looks like the Bernina.
