  1. Maybe so. but I still learn things occasionally on here though. On a side note, years ago, the only reason I stopped posting to Mick Knutson's blincmagazine base website was because I forgot my password. His website was so difficult that I couldn't figure out how to get a forgotten password or to change my password. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    Question

Up until the early 1990s, gear could play a significant factor in death and injuries. What amazes me now are the vented pilot chutes and the bottom skin inlets on square canopies. Thanks Space for educating the community on the importance of the orbiting pilot chute! I've seen some carnage footage showing people flying into cliffs with vented canopies. Almost everyone of them survives. Being around long enough, I was completely shocked when I saw these jumpers slide down the wall a bit, turn it around, and land relatively unscathed. I suspect body armor was also key here. My training was that a cliff strike (if the cliff had any significant texture) meant automatic death, even with some armor. The standardization of the gear was key to the success of BASE jumping. Fine tuning a Pegasus, Cruiselite, or Raven could be a harrowing process and we don't all have access to easy drop points like some of the current BASE manufacturers. I see no significant correlation between the jumpers' deaths and their gear in the post-2000 era. I would surmise that a majority of the recent deaths are from pilot error. On another note, by having such 'reliable' gear, jumpers are now doing jumps that were previously unheard of. In addition, most jumpers are not in the jump technique mindset of having a 180 on every other jump. This mindset dictated the approach to jumping in past years for the old school jumpers. Felony tower jumping?

With a penalty that harsh for such a minor offense, the rational thing to do is not surrender and fight for your life at any cost. This is one reason some laws were rewritten to be less strict several years ago. Certain criminal perpetrators would kill their victims simply because the laws were so harsh that they would otherwise face life in prison. Unfortunately the law makers eventually changed and those harsh sentences are becoming irrationally popular with politicians and their unknowing constituents. 6. If you are so underground, why do you have an email address in you profile? Reverse lookups can tell a lot. Who the hell wants to be injured jumping? Accidents can and do happen, sometimes regardless of the skill of the jumper. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    Felony tower jumping?

States such as Florida make it a felony to trespass on construction sites. This was passed due to excessive theft on these sites which are typically houses and buildings. However, what if a tower is under construction or is having work done on it? Would that be a felony? Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

  10. 194 feet. I got asked to do it for a Thrillfest several years ago with help from Pace Entertainment. The jump event got cancelled after from what I recall was a bungee jumping accident during practive for a sanctioned stadium event. The Carl and Phil stuff for the game was pretty cool! 13. The jumpers on the Space Needle jump were Eric Simpson, Andy Calistrat, Steve Mulholland, and Nancy Kleutmeir. Nancy broke some vertebrea when one of her toggles malfunctioned and the line-mod system failed to work. This accident set back the base demo community for several years. 15. BASE 175 and BASE 58 also did this from the real Astrodome for the Thrillfest circa 1989. Carl Boenish and Phil Smith did this too for a baseball game circa 1981. It would be a little more considerate if someone would at least contact the locals whenever events like this occur. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
  16. I get about 150 feet horizontally exiting from 900 feet and opening around 150 feet. I would guess around 300 to 400 feet or so from 1500 feet. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

  18. Because it IS DIFFERENT NOW! I have asked the old timers about this and they said when they started, no one seemed to care. And then the bad experiences came from dayblazing buildings. And that's why the universal rule of night jumping started. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    Flamethrowers anyone?

"Like any red-blooded, masculine man of the male gender, I love PVC weaponry. You should too. If the concept of heading on down to the local Home Depot and transforming $100 worth of random pipe bits into a killing machine doesn't appeal to you, you're a goddamn pansy. Also, you're probably sane and will live significantly longer than I will. Nonetheless you disgust me, and I take comfort in the knowledge that your obituary will be nowhere near as humorous as mine. For those of you who laugh in the face of hypersonic shards of plastic puncturing your spleen, here's an intimate look at how I've kept myself busy for the past week: building a PVC flamethrower. 25. My buddy has video one of our local 2000 foot towers falling in the 1980s. It's Channel 20 in Houston. Unfortunately there were 3 workers who also fell to their death and that's on the video too. The camera crew had to run for their lives while the tower spiralled (yes it spiralled) down.
