It's called staging the pilot chute to place it directly above you after the pitch. It depends on how you pack your pilot chute independent of material. This has been the most critical factor for me in getting on heading openings. DW has popularized the pitch up method head high method for super low jumps but it was known experimentally by many jumpers before him. If there is less chance of an oscillation though through a new technology, I would take it regardless of cost. Many a jumper in the past wished they had spent a little extra money on better gear while sitting in the hospital in traction. The only real hazard from buzzards is when you harrass them or shoot them they will vomit partially digested carrion on you. They are nearly impervious to gunshot for some reason. Shooting one is highly illegal since their role in the ecosystem is critical. They eat all the roadkill that would otherwise putrify in a disgusting diseased-filled maggot-filled bacterial pile. Do you realize that a 16 year old Al Queda sympathizer flew a small plane into one of the buildings in that area? The kid was killed. I think it was St. Pete but it may have been Tampa. Earl was one of the best climbers in the world. As an indicator of skill, he set a first ascent route on the Trango Towers in Pakistan of all places. That would be something like setting a new route on Cerro Torre. It was disappointing to the old school jumpers when everyone remember Clint Ford (Earl and Clint died in the same plane) instead of Earl when Earl was one of the most fascinating people on the planet. Earl was also probably the first to make 1000 base jumps. If not him, maybe BASE 74. I don't think BASE 36, Mark, got 1000 first. Selling a newbie a rig? I would do whatever my conscience told me to do after talking to this perspective customer. I didn't have anyone to show me around in the beginning of my jumping. And I was pretty clueless but a prominent base manufacturer sold me a canopy many years ago. After getting the rig, I obtained packing videos, talked to experienced jumpers over the phone, read as much underground base literature as a I could. high speed spinning mal (slider up entanglement and perhaps a line over) from 850 feet of an A at night alone without a cell phone. I fixed it before impact. line over slider up on terminal jump, opening at 350 feet. fixed it before impact. getting nearly eaten by alligators when i landed in an alligator nest. getting charged by bulls after landing on many occasions. nearly got trampled by angry horses on approach to a site. stalked by boars with tusks while approaching an A. breaking femur on an A and getting eaten very badly by fire ants. missed pilot chute on a low pull and unintentially opened at 80 feet on a terminal jump. having a group of middle easterners pull handguns on us on approach to an A through a bad neighborhood (from dressing like a ninja and carrying a black stash bag). now i always carry my rig and helmet in an obvious way to prevent this from reoccuring. chased by security guards in their personal 1970s cadillacs on a highway for 5 miles at over 100 mph after a building jump. hit a 500 pound cow at 50 mph with vehicle at night immediately after making jump from an A. etc. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

This is a good thread. Apparently there is controversy regarding the training of students. Like I posted before, it would be cool if there was an internal password protected forum for base instructors. There is little standardization.
