Sounds like a good plan to me. I'm not a politician so I have no idea how you would make this happen to become a reality. It would take money and probably allowing oil/gas production in the Rockies, Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. Now that I think of it, I'd be OK for it to be a combined energy independence with Canada. As we know, the sands/shale up there is just waiting. Only a matter of time, money and the political will to push for it. Wasn't Jimmy Carter actually making noises about energy independence as a policy? I think the US should set as a national policy that energy independence shall be reached by a date certain. I'm not proposing what the schedule should be, but it should be a date certain, with tax money or gas tax dollars spent to make it happen because it is a matter of national security. Of course it would have the wonderful effect of greatly reducing the influence and importance of a bunch of bad guys.

I think you're being a little harsh. I rode my street bike for only a few years and that was 20 years ago. I wouldn't consider myself to be a cycle 'wuffo'. If the 'rider' was really always on the back of the seat, then I think you're spot on. I did have a lot of experience on dirt bikes. I think that learning skills on the dirt is extremely beneficial for street riders. Do you think there are a lot of bikes that are louder than allowed by law? Is the noise law enforced? I understand that it is illegal to have your horn blaring constantly, but why should it be when the exhaust of bikes or cars can be so loud? I think the legal exhaust noise limits should be quite a bit lower, and then everyone should be allowed to have a dedicated type of horn for letting everyone else know you're there. They test the units at environmental extremes (temp/vibration), test the accuracy and resolution of the sensors, etc. If your unit was functioning correctly, it ran through its self test like usual when you had it, then the maintenance check may have found a bad component or bit of wiring that only presented itself at high temperature, for instance.
