  1. I have seen this before although I don't know what is to be done about it. I have even had the odd one from a harder opening on a student rig and I don't bruise easily. Maybe someone else willhave better advice to give but it wasn't treated as a big deal either at my dz. age S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
  2. Absolutely. You can't regulate judgement. Which is where it could be argued that some problems arise. Good judment only comes after a lot of experience and some bad judgement too.! Age S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
  3. not cool at all! S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
  4. Valid point in my opinion. I does look cool and I long to do them. And there will always be those myself included that aspire to be that skilled(someday). Regulation won't catch everything. What I think it will do is the following should it come to pass. and let me state that I don't have a final opinion on whether it should or not be done [regulation]:It will give DZOs that maybe care but are too scared to look like a gestapo a place to point and say here is the rule and here is why you can't jump that bedsheet at my DZ with your experience (notice I didn't say Jump numbers). It might save some newbies who are still scared about breaking rules that are in print. It will piss of all of the old timers who were in the sport since before the days of regulation and are fed up with it. and last but not least it will piss off the "100 jump wonders" I don't think there is a black and white answer to this problem. I don't think that the answer lies in regulation alone but in a combination of some of the ideas that were presented in these discussions. my 2 cents Age S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
  5. Pete. Funny meeting you on here instead of at the DZ. Here is what I have to say about your questions. I too wondered at your number of jumps how I would react in a mal. To counteract that nagging doubt I always listened carefully to the instructors, practiced dilegently my emergency procedure, asked a lot of questions. Something else I also listened to was other jumpers (experienced) descriptions of what their mals looked like and how it felt. When you do have one don't worry about trying too long to correct it. You won't. Training dictates we try twice to fix things that we think are fixable and then we move on. That is exactly what you will do. And you will do them in lightning speed cause the human self preservation instinct is like the 8th wonder of the world I had my first and only mal at Jump #35. I was at Springhill (for those of you who aren't from Winnipeg this isn't a normal DZ. it is actually a skihill that we have an event at annaully) jumping from a Bell 206 helicopter. This was my second time that day jumpinf from the heli. I was still nervous about that situation but I jumped. threw. waited. My internal clock went off telling me it was taking to long. I looked up and poof it opened. I had never seen a lineover before but listening to the experienced jumpers told me exactly what it was so I recognized it immediately. I didn't panic at all. I yelled "Shit" (more annoyed than anything else I haven't quite figured out why) and located my handles and chopped. I believe that my training took over. Here was a situation that I didn't panic about because I knew what I had to do. Since then I have been in several situations where one might think that panic was in order but training and instincts that come with experience take over and you assess and react quickly (steering line knotted around finger, break unstowed during opening(on my stiletto)). In other words dude don't worry too much about just pay attention to what is taught and you wil do fine. Age S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
  6. I am playing it to death 2. I have 4 different versions of Bring me to life and I like everyone of them Age S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
  7. I would definitely say it is due to popularity... At my DZ small though it may be, with few exceptions everyone either jumps a Sabre or a Stiletto. I can count the exceptions on 1 hand. Age S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
  8. No problem man it happens. Glad we got that cleared though. So that we can go on and be friends with no angst. I wondered about this when I started jumping my first set of gear. and talked to my dzo about swooping and how I couldn't get any seoop out of my canopy and he promptly took my gear up and wound up my canopy and got some hellified swoop out of it. It was an old Bt-60 that he would have been loading at maybe 1-1. Then to further demonstrate the point he took up a student Manta and though not as great managed to get some good swoop out of that as well. The point was well taken. My DZO is known for "aggressive" canopy selection but I have never seen him suggest something that I considered uber aggressive. My Selection may have been the most aggressive that I have seen in the last little while and I am sure that it has caused some discussion amongst some of the other jumpers. I would agree that it is somewhat aggressive but it was a choice that I made. I don't consider myself a "100 jump wonder" though others may disagree. And I am flying very conservatively under my new wing. I don't want to be a statistic. Age S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
  9. When I was putting together my new gear I wanted a reserve that would fit into my voodoo that was bigger than my main and found that it was somewhat difficult to do with current reserves. Anything that was bigger than my main that I found had pack volumes that were larger than what was available. I ended up going with a Swift Plus to get the bigger square footage. My other choice was a Tempo. You will note that both of these aren't made anymore. I think most people get smaller reserves for several reasons. 1) being that most people around them have set-ups like that and 2) They want the very smallest containers possible. I do admit I would love to have the smallest container possible. Why? because I think it is damned cool to have a container that is smaller than your back. However I also know that I can't be cool if I am a smear on the tarmac at some airport and so I will trade-off some coolness points for some self-preservation points and have a larger pack with a larger reserve. 10. Ron, I hope that you didn't think that my post about ego was directed at you personally. It wasn't my intention at all and if it came off that way I apoplogize (I would have PMed you but I figured if you did take it that way that the apology should be public too) I has specific people and instances in mind with that post. No Ron I have been reading your posts and I think that you do. More people should care as you do and be willing do speak on it. Agreed. This isn't a perfect solution but it is definitely a starting point. One that can be shaped at a later date. Good question! The main answer I can come up with is that many newbies equate the great swoop landings with the canopy you fly as opposed to the skill of the pilot. They have money and off they go. I am thoroughly enjoying this discussion. Thanks to all who are participating. Age S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
  11. ***But when you think you are better quailfied to make choices than people who have MUCH more EXP than you...well thats a lot of ego there.... *** Ego is a problem for me too sometimes. Not mine but the ones of the people that are supposed to be giving advice. I have determined that often just because someone has way more jumps than you doesn't make me want to listen to what they have to say. There are people at my DZ whose opinions that I value and others that I will listen to but not necessarily act on before running by the people that I trust. And no I don't just trust them because they tell me what I want to hear, but because there is never any guile, ego, condescension or anything but genuine concern for my well being and progression when they talk to me. 12. Only 2 on my DZ (it is quite small) and both were by the same person. The first time was under a PD210 if I had to guess I would say that he weighs in at 185 or less. Did a low turn (slowly I might add) and got away with smacking his knee on the ground. I was laying on my stomach in my tent watching the landing area. What an interesting perspective that was. That was almost his last jump (july I think) last season. His knee still isn't right, he gets it scoped in July of this year. This year he gets a new canopy, refuses to jump his old one until he is current and pulls almost the same move on his new Sabre2 170. this time he landed on his ass. lucky if you ask me. I don't know if anyone has spoken to him yet. I wasn't there to see the jump but I saw the video and it brougnt back memories of the first time. 24. Hey LukeDuke! Let me first start of by saying that I don't know what your financial situation is but my suggestion to you would be to use your money for Jumps and don't seat the suit and equipment right now. I come from a smaller DZ where there isn't brand new matching Jumpsuits for every student to wear either so I am no stranger to wearing girly coloured Jumpsuits to get a jump done cause "my suit" was being worn by someone else. I have watched people buy jumpsuits too early in their student career and then a season later they don't like it because it doesn't have booties, or their fall rate has changed and they have trouble being relative in it, or now they want a freefly suit instead of an RW suit. I think a good way to allieveate this is to jump using student stuff until you can fly and are sure how you want to. Just my 2 cents, enjoy the skies brother.
