mt-1xx HELP

i purchased a mt-1xx rig and conpies which was de-milled. it is in great condition except i have to get the canopies relined. i talked to one of the instructors in Perris yesterday and he said they wouldnt let me jump it there due to it not having any type of tso rating. the military has these rigs rated to 360lbs (im about 350lbs out the door) but apprantly there is no tso ratings. is this correct? is there no tso ratings? if not does the military ratings carry over? hope i didnt waste my money on a rig and wont be able to jump the darn thing. can anyone point me in the right direction? what really gets me p.o'd is he said once i am off student status and have my license i could jump any of my own rigs if they had a tso rating (not the one i bought) and they dont check to make sure you fall within the tso limits!! well what the hell is that? i take that to mean i could jump something not rated for me and have no problem but jumping something i have that is rated to my weight....you get the idea. just goes to show how some laws are backwards. sorry if im getting carried away and getting red in the face.

The rig was built under government contract and is legal to jump. How do you think all the old surplus gear, cheapos, 24' flat, T-10's were jumped in the 60's and 70's. Several years ago this issue came up at another So. Cal DZ and I spoke with Elek Puskas and confirmed that they could be jumped by civilians.

Try contacting the manufacturer. Guaranteed the rating on that rig is WAY higher than a standard rating on civilian gear. I bet they could show you the process they went through with the military to get the gear certified. If it doesn't have a TSO I'd be suprised, and even if it doesn't, if their testing was equivalent I bet you could get some form of waiver (FAA) for it with USPA's help. Lots of work, but don't give up hope.

This is the authority allowing the jumping military gear. Section (d), (1) % (2).

Sec. 105.43 Parachute equipment and packing requirements.

(a) No person may make a parachute jump, and no pilot in command of an
aircraft may allow any person to make a parachute jump from that aircraft,
unless that person is wearing a single harness dual parachute pack, having at
least one main parachute and one approved auxiliary parachute that are packed
as follows:
(1) The main parachute must have been packed by a certificated parachute
rigger, or by the person making the jump, within 120 days before the date of
its use.
(2) The auxiliary must have been packed by a certificated and appropriately
rated parachute rigger:
(i) Within 120 days before the date of use, if its canopy, shroud, and
harness are composed exclusively of nylon, rayon, or other similar synthetic
fiber or material that is substantially resistant to damage from mold,
mildew, or other fungi and other rotting agents propagated in a moist
environment; or
(ii) Within 60 days before the date of use, if it is composed in any amount
of silk, pongee, or other natural fiber, or material not specified in
paragraph (a)(2)(i) of this section.
(b) No person may make a parachute jump using a static line attached to the
aircraft and the main parachute unless an assist device, described and
attached as follows, is used to aid the pilot chute in performing its
function, or, if no pilot chute is used, to aid in the direct deployment of
the main parachute canopy.
(1) The assist device must be long enough to allow the container to open
before a load is placed on the device.
(2) The assist device must have a static load strength of--
(i) At least 28 pounds but not more than 160 pounds, if it is used to aid
the pilot chute in performing its function; or
(ii) At least 56 pounds but not more than 320 pounds, if it is used to aid
in the direct deployment of the main parachute canopy.
(3) The assist device must be attached--
(i) At one end, to the static line above the static line pins, or, if
static pins are not used, above the static line ties to the parachute cone;
and
(ii) At the other end, to the pilot chute apex, bridle cord or bridle loop,
or, if no pilot chute is used, to the main parachute canopy.
(c) No person may attach an assist device required by paragraph (b) of this
section to any main parachute unless he has a current parachute rigger
certificate issued under Part 65 of this chapter or is the person who makes
the jump with that parachute.
(d) For the purpose of this section, an "approved" parachute is:
(1) A parachute manufactured under a type certificate or a technical
standard order (C-23 series); or
(2) A personnel-carrying military parachute (other than a high altitude,
high-speed, or ejection kind) identified by an NAF, AAF, or AN drawing
number, an AAF order number, or any other military designation or
specification number.

It sounds like its just a Perris rule that you cannot jump this rig.

Quoting them official rules may help them change their mind, but THEY make up the rules for THEIR DZ. If they don't want you to jump it they only have to say no.

See if getting them to let you enter a bit into your video waiver saying that you acknolage that you are jumping a non TSO'd rig and have been advised not to by the DZ but that its your choice and your happy to jump it. Might help em change their mind, but like I said... its their decision not the FAA's.

If all else fails, elsinore is just up the road. They may not worry.

Well i can tell you that we had a guy this summer jumping an MT-1x so i dont think its an TSO thing, the funny thing was that only two of us knew what kind of rig it was, also, was it demilled for a reason? I have seen several of the rigs complete with both reserve and main still intact with really low jumps on them but i would contact paraflite personally for all of that info, hell they built it.

i just wanted everyone to know, that i think Perris is a first class DZ and my comments may be takent he other way. I was a bit frustrated and it didnt really have anything to do with Perris...just a bit disappointed in myself by buying something without checking into it first. Again I appoligize if I offended anyone.

looks like i have gotten around the TSO issue and Elsinore (8 miles from my house) is going to let me jump it. Once we talked to Mike Gainey and Jay Stokes (thanks for the help guys) they cleared up the confusion with military ratings/TSO's. Yes i am STOKED!!
