What camcorder to buy?

Recommended Posts

OK...the Q is..

What camcorder would you buy right now?

Sony and a mini dv format is pretty much a given....but go with a HC3/5/7 in HD or a non HD in the HC20 to 90 series?

Lets keep the hope of finding a PC series on EBAY out of the discussion.

So..Lanc port or not...still capable or not...is 6.5cm too wide for a side mount?..or is it too wide with the present mounts?...dv in along with out??(very few cams seem to offer dv in)...I have 100 Q's...way too many to ask.

So again I ask...

What camcorder would be recomended by the "fine" folks who frequent this dizzy.com forum?

If your just a asshole who wants to come back with the fact that I cant jump camera yet or "do a search"...well just go pleasure yourself now...and I wont have to suggest it once you post ;)

My eyes have been bleeding from reading these forums and the much more informative reviews on diferent sites.......HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

Waiting may not be a good thing...the more research I do indicates that newer models will have even less features(somone please correct me if needed)...right now the only mini dv that sony makes with both a lanc and a AV in seems to be the DCRHC96....even the HDRHC7 does not have AV in [:/]

However the HC96 is a tad wide at 73mm and a bit of a spicy meatball at $800CAD.

The HDRHC series can shoot in HD or "normal" mode and records in mini dv format...I have already determined that I have no need to go HD at this point and time...but if the series offered the options that seem to have become standard from the skydiving world with the PC series...then going HD would be a "no-brainer"...that however does not appear to be the case [:/]

Sony is making this a difficult decission for myself and for others too I imagine...other brands seem to have the features that sony is dropping...but lack the quality of a sony(or have things changed??)

Duayne...what would you buy now if in the market.....and why?

The PC-1 is dirt cheap, the newer PC like the 7, 9, 101, 109, 100, 110, 120, 130, 330, 350, 1000 cost a lot more. I watched several auctions last year where the 1's were going for less then $100 and a 101 would go for $500+. I sold a broken (and advertised as such) PC110 for $150.

Unless you have some compelling need to absolutely have a camera right now I would wait. If you don't start jumping it for 1-3 years by the time you are jumping it the technology will have changed greatly. If you don't need an HD camera (i.e. you don't have a HDTV or a desire to produce for one) don't spend the money on it now.

The features aren't getting that much worse. The loss of the lanc port on the low end models sucks but the higher end models still have it and I would guess they are going to continue to have it. Blowing a ton of money right now on something "high end" is just going to piss you off down the road when you do get into shooting video and want what everyone else has (the latest and greatest.) If you _HAVE_ to have a camera now and don't have a specific feature set you are looking for buy something cheap. Then later when you get into doing more with video buy something that will make you happy.

Worst case, if you have $1k burning a hole in your pocket and you want to blow it on a camera, go to the bank and buy a CD with it and earn some interest then buy the camera when you have more of a use for it.

I could make some suggestions for cameras but all you have really told us is that you don't want to jump with it now, but might some day. My typical response is the above, wait till someday and then buy a camera - you will get better picture quality which is all that really matters, at least to me.

A bit off-topic, but if my current camera breaks my next one will be HD, even if I don't use the HD capabilities. My HC90 was $800 1.5 years ago, the HC5 is now $800. Spot mentioned in another thread (if I understand correctly) that most companies will be discontinuing SD soon, I think.

Sure, but you are flying the camera and activly using it. You are getting your moneys worth on the last camera you have and will have done so by the time you need to get a new one. Getting HD for you when you do need a new one makes sense because even though you aren't using it for the HD now you can get a good archive going. When the camera is mostly just going to sit around I don't think its worth it because in 1-2 years the technology is certainly going to change or get cheaper.

Grrrrrrrr...dont ya just hate it when 3/4 of the way through a long winded post something craps out and ya have to start over??>:(

I dont think most people NEED a camera for skydiving...sure there are the vidiots and such who make $$ but how many are just learning/playing with a camera?

I dont NEED a camera right now....but I do have a intrest in it and would like to start learning...my learning has already started by doing some research and of course reading and posting to this forum.

Being familiar, very familiar with a camera before strapping it to ones head in freefall seems like common sence to me.......there are many things to shoot at the DZ besides freefall...they just seem to be forgotten for the "glory" of the freefall shots.

I would like to start by shooting peoples landings and offering them back at no charge to use in debreifing....I know I could have and still could use some landing video of some less then stellar landings for some coaching.......

There are many things I could and will shoot....I also would like to play with some basic moulding of cam boxes and helmets(this is another thread in itself ;) )

And NO I dont have 1k burning a hole in my pocket...if I did..I just buy and not worry about the finer details.

Loosing the lanc on lower end models does not seem to be the only loss...the a/v in going to the wayside is also a major loss IMHO.

Thanks for your responce..it is much appreciated and I still pose the Q to you......WHAT WOULD YOU BUY?

what make and model would you be looking at if that was to happen??? :)

Right now maybe an HC5, I haven't researched it enough to say for sure, because I'm not buying now.

When my camera does break (in the future), it will not be the HC5, it will be something which does not yet exist.

I would try to find a PC1000 on ebay. I have one now and am happy with it and my helmet is set up for it. I want an HD camera pretty bad, but with what is on the market right now I would have to change helmets and go to top mount which I don't really want to do. There are lots of things that would go into it for me. I only skydive because of the money I making shooting video, so its a bit different of a question for me.

Things that are important to me are: picture quality, weight, size. In 3+ years of owning a mini dv camera I have used the AVin one time to dub some tunnel footage before they could put it right on a dvd. Since then I haven't touched a single analog source. The lanc port is nice for the cameye and never missing that tandem vid, but the higher end models all have it and because of what im shooting for / my personal belief a higher end model is all I would buy.
