Aff1 ....sucky exit and arch question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,
I did my AFF1 yesterday and even though I knew thw dive inside and out when i got to the door I guess fear got the better of me and I forgot to look at the plane when I let go and i did not present my arch to the wind. Sorta just jumped backwards and looked down causing me and both my JM's to tumble for a few seconds.. after they got me stable the rest of the dive went perfect.......My question...is there any tips on what i can do to get myself ready for the next jump so as not to make the same mistake twice ....thanks for any help on this matter....Tom

Tom,
When you look outside the plane, maintain eyes on the Aircrafts prop the entire time and this will help keep your body exposed to the relative wind. More importantly exit more vigiorously and watch the plane fly away........................and relax!

Since that was your first AFF dive, I think you were entitled to a good flailing exit.

Since you've already jumped once, you'll be a little more prepared for L-2

You've already answered your own question. I don't know what aircraft you jumped out of but When you peel off the airplane, look at it for a while. Keep your legs out as you arch, then relax.

Dirt dive level one over and over until you get trained for Level 2. You'll do fine.

I've got 17 jumps and I still suck going out the door. Every single time I get flipped around somehow and have never been able to watch the plane fly away. I stabilize quickly, but just wig out for the first couple of seconds. I think it's fairly common for us newbies.

ive only jumped once so far
and i never seen the plane
i was never told to look at the plane
actually i was only told once i landed to do
up down up horizen arch
which is what i plan doing next time
as i think it will get my head up more
insetad of up down up arch

I had no idea where the plane went
i remember feeling as if i was going over backwards lol
and could see losts of sky and no ground then all of a sudden i could see the ground and was relaxed

and as for seeing the instructors
i never seen or felt them once
for all i knew i could have been on me own
up untill i did me practice look reach pull and felt the shake and realised they were there lol but i still never seen them

i loved the canopy ride but i was in a lot of pain from the opening
my legs got rammed into my hip joints and i got a lot of bruising
could hardly even walk for the next 3 days lol
hope its a easier opening this weekend

You may not be as out of shape as you think you are .. On my level 3 I felt all out of shape and asked the instructor how I can correct my sloppy exit and he commented "what sloppy exit?" I guess just the process of falling off the hill feels like your flopping around alot more than you really are.

Focus on the prop and arch hard with your feet out a bit and you'll get it . Just about the time you get it wired they'll throw unstable exits at you just for fun

pretend there's porn stuck to the ceiling of the plane by the door. Look up at that spot and keep trying to look up at it as long as you can after you exit.

One of my JM's told me to look at the plane and tell him if the landing gear was up or down when I exited. I think I like this idea better.:S

Skydive Pennsylvania is fortunate enough to have both a KingAir 99 and a C182, I've only jumped the Cessna once and loved it, how easy is it to just take a step backwards? I read in one of the other threads about using the Wheel Burble explanation for Cessna's, I still get a chuckle thinking of that.
The landing gear thing, though, that was from the Beech. It was my last jump, I was (I don't know the proper term) on the outside of the plane presenting my backside to the wind, facing into the plane, the JM went over the exit on the ground numerous times, swinging my left leg a little for the count, but the little half twist to present my arch to the relative wind was a bit hard for me to visualize on the ground, that's when he told me about the landing gear trick. It didn't work all that well[:/] "Floater exit, over rotated, good recovery~clear to level VIII"
